Reading Report

Name of book:

The Shawshank of Redemption(a short story from his sample reels named Different Seasons)

Writer’s name:

Stphen King who is one of the most popular thriller writers.

Summary:

This story happened in 1947.Andy was a banker. One day he knew that his wife was detailed, and he planned to kill her and her lover after drank so much. Finally, Andy gave up his plan. But others found that they were killed in the bed that night. Andy was arrested because he was accused to be the murder who had the reason to kill the two people, and no ones believed he was innocent. The result is that Andy had to spend the whole in Shawshank prison. Red(Ellis Boyd Redding) had been spent a long in the prison, he could get almost anything if you have enough money. The first goods Andy asked Red to buy was a hammer which used to carve, and he said he could hide it so that guards could not find. They became friends after Andy bought some goods.

Once, Andy heard guards were talking about tax, and he said to them that he could help them reduce taxes illegally. As for change, they had to give him and his partners 3 bottles of beer. Red knew

what Andy needed was just a moment of freedom. Andy was arranged to manage the library. In order to have more books for prisoners, he wrote a letter once a week to show his desire, he achieved his goal after 6 years. After he began to help Warden Samuel Norton make money which was beyond the law as well as dealt some necessary documents. A thief who knew Andy was not the murder came here, Andy was really happy because this was only chance to get out the prison legally. Samuel said he would try his best to help Andy, in fact Samuel killed the thief. Andy realized only he could redeem himself. It was a successful prison break, and what he used just the hammer that bought from Red. It cost Andy more than 20 years to dig the hole which was behind the actress’s poster. He got the money which was Samuel’s, and sent the proofs to government. Samuel killed himself. Red also got out of the prison because of parole, he found Andy. Finally, they lived together freely and peacefully beyond the sea.

MY POR:

The Shawshank Redemption is my favorite story. Without love and family, it still a popular and profound story. I think the personality of the hero draw people’s attention. Thinking of that, if we were the hero, what would you do? Staying in the prison till the end of life or fighting against the devils till they kill you? If you wanted to get out of the prison, what would you? I can not imagine that. Story always

exaggerate the fact, at least we can still learn something from the story.

First, never be despaired whenever life seems helpless. Often in life, events occur that we truly can not control. The company we are working for “downsize” and we get laid off. Our spouse leaves us. A family member becomes ill, or someone close to us dies. The government cuts a program we have depended on. In those situation, we may feel as if there is simply nothing we can do to make things better. Never be despaired! There is always a way when it is the right time. What you have to do is just going through the hard time, you will soon balance your life. Hope is a strong moral power that makes you endeavor to achieve your goals. A man can do nothing without hope.

Second, change yourself if you can not change the world. It is the survival of the fittest, It is also the reason why our human beings can live till now. It is the most available rule for us who will graduate soon. In my opinion, most young people who were born after 1980s are always thinking themselves more or less. Some of them are too self-esteem so that they never want to change themselves. Maybe this is a reason why most young people canoe work at a company for a long time. It may difficult to change yourself at the beginning, but if it is the only way that you can live, you have to do it. On the other hand,

you do not have to change all your personalities, you need characters to let others know you.

Third, never justify people by their past. There is no perfect man in the world, so everyone may make mistakes. The prison is foe who made serious mistakes. It is unfair to say all prisoners are bad guys. I think some of their instincts are not so bad. besides, the life of prisoner who get out of the prison is really hard to live. In the story, there was an old man who had stayed in the prison for 70 years. He was respected by everyone because he was a wise man with great knowledge. He could teach other prisoners many things. He even had a position, which was to manage the library. But after he got out of the prison, he became an idle man who could do nothing. The world has changed so much during the past 70 years. Finally, he worn his best clothes then hung himself, he just wanted to die with esteem. No company will employ a prisoner. No matter what changes have taken place, they will not be treated the same with others. Maybe we should give them a chance to start new life, or they will break the law again because they can not live just like ordinary people.

Through this story, we also see some social problems. Lust, Authority, Money, Hatred. If someone addicted themselves to such things, the prison is the final destination. As for us, what we should do learn is how to keep an ordinary heart when we succeed. Too proud

makes people get into a harmful situation. The way to true success is to learn how to control your mind.

A good story makes you think a lot. This is why I like The shawshank Redemption. We are all adults now, we have to know more beyond what we learned from books. For we have responsibility to our country even to the world.

BEAUTIFUL SENTENCES:

1. Remember, Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies!

2. I guess it comes down to a simple choice: get busy living or get busy dying.

3. Fear can hold you prisoner , hope can set you free. A strong man can save himself, a great man can save another.

4. Prison life consists of routine, and then more routine.

5. These walls are kind of funny like that. First you hate them, then you get used to them. Enough time passed, get so you depend on them. That's institutionalized.

6. It takes a strong man to save himself, and a great man to save another.

7. I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged.

Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock hem up DOES rejoice. Still, the place you

Impression on The Shawshank Redemption

This is the second time that I watched the movie,I wanted to watch it for a long time, but because of series of reasons I did not. Then,I finally watched it,but there was nothing left. But this time, incidentally,it gives me a lot.

I have watched so many movies about the life in the prison, but what they reflect are bad things. But in this movie, you can see more moving scenes instead of evil.

Andy was innocent, but he was in the prison. He tried his best to adjust to the environment at first, and seldom spoke to other people, but two months later,he began to made friends with others and became Red’s friend.

Difficult as the life is,there were many moving scenes such as the moment that they were drinking beers in the setting sun.

Andy endured a lot,but he never gave up.

What made me thought a lot was Books,he was a prisoner and took charge of the library in the prison. When he was told that he could get out ,he felt sad instead of happy. As Red analyzed:In the prison ,he was somebody, but out there ,he was nobody, not to speak of his sicking hands. So Books could not fit the life outside and took his own life.Maybe, death is the real freedom to him.

In fact, the film tend to tell us the attitude to life----One should always feel hopeful. In a manner of speaking, the film made Andy to let us know the power of hope.

All in all,the movie told us:Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies. And the film really worth seeing.

The story may sound simple, but the truth behind the words is remarkable. When I heard the name of the film first time, I considered the Shawshank to be a man’ name, but in face it is a jail——a hell in the world. Not only for the inhumanity of the jailors——they behaved brutally; but also for the jail gnawed at people’ heart by keeping them waiting and waiting as life passed. It seemed that only those utterly worthless people who gave up everything could survive. That’s where the story happened. The part impressed me most is when Andy got out of the jai. He extended his arms in front of him in the heavy rain as if he were welcoming the fresh air and the freedom. At that moment, I saw the faith win the darkness, discharging light dazzling the eyes in the dark blue sky. Under the light, I could feel my recreant innermost being shivering as his voice said: “Remember, Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies!” That’s why I like this film: it encourages people to fight to preserve the dignity of human beings, to appreciate the beauty of life, and the most important is to keep hope forever. He once that is born, that is die. Everyone is the same. The only difference is whether busy living or busy dying. The film tells me even a man can live once, but if he keeps faith, keeps hope and works his life right, then once is enough. The faith is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark, the hope is the chief happiness that this world affords, and the life should be full of the singing of the bird and the happiness hope brings. " What’s that do you think? It’s the trembling of the heart, the singing of the mind, the flying of the soul and the hope to be free.”

Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies!

I can’t agree with it any more. In the film, the walls of the prison can bind people’s freedom. But they can not deprive people’s hope. The hero, Andy, never abandons the desire for freedom, and he keeps up working for his hope. Every night andy uses the little hammer to dig the wall that in others’ opinion, it will takes hundreds of years to dig through. He makes all preparations for leaving the prison. So he succeeds, and regains the precious freedom. It is hope that helps Andy get through painful prison life and regain the freedom. At the same time, hope saves his friend’s life too. Therefore, in real life, no matter how difficult the situation is, we shouldn’t give up our hope. We should stick to work hard for the hope. In this way our life will not lose its significance.

So please remember, Hope is a good thing, and no good thing ever dies!

影片中安迪有这样一句话:“Don't forget that there are … places … in the world that are not made up of stone, there is something … inside … that they can not get to … that is hope (不要忘了,这个世界穿透一切高墙的东西,它就在我们的内心深处,他们无法达到,也接触不到,那就是希望)”。

Remember, Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies!

Andy in the film there is such a word: " Don't forget that there are ... Places ... In the world that are not made up of stone, there is something ... Inside ... That they can not get to ... That is hope ( don't forget the world through walls, all things, there's something inside, that they cannot get to, that they cannot touch, that is hope ) ". Indeed, as ANDY said, the wall can bind our body freedom, even in the system that can bind our spiritual freedom, but only hope can not give up. Lose hope of life is dull, lifeless, and even there is no significance. ANDY in my heart has not abandoned the desire for freedom, but he has also been hope for their own efforts -- every night to use the hammer to dig RED that hundreds of years to dig through the wall. And for RED and BROOKS, they had to give up hope, because in their view of hope can only make yourself more pain, even think hope is the source of the pain. A man in the 19 years of painful prison life, do not give up longing for freedom, this is a kind of spiritual beliefs, so he succeeded, recapturing their freedom, the judgment of the Lord fell quickly.

Today i saw a very shocking film ((Shawshank Redemption)), andy deeply by the strong conviction in the face of the cruel reality of the spirit is still harbor dreams, as well as superhuman intelligence and wisdom. When I had finished watching the movie.I was excited and I wanted to watch it again. It’s great, ranging from the figures and details to the sprit the music conveyed to.’Hope is dangerous’ Red had ever said. There are even more amazing is the creative director ----- has escaped through a story has brought us so much inspiration and shock. I saw the film "the Shawshank Redemption” last time in my class, it completely blew me away and for days I couldn't stop talking about it. The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most popular movies of all time. The story was about the caring and smart banker Andy Dufresne, who is falsely accused and convicted of the murder of his wife. He is sent to Shawshank prison in the 1940’s, he meets many fellow prisoners, including Red, who becomes his important friend. During his time at Shawshank Andy’s way of life is changed, but he never looses his hope. It’s a powerful story of hope, friendship and freedom, made remarkable by the interaction between the two lead characters. Hope is the major force behind the lead character Andy, and Andy uses hope to change the other lead character Red. “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever die." ---Red (Morgan Freeman). In my opinion, it’s one of the best movies ever made. If I could recommend to you one movie you must see before you die it is this one. Let me show you why? Firstly, the characters in the film were all deep and showed a lot of human character and emotion, and the acting was also really good making every character seem real, both Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman do a fine job in terms of making their roles genuine and appealing, and also in the way they work so well together. Secondly, the songs are all entertaining and range from excitement to drama to great sadness, they are really beautiful! Thirdly, the film is also very well photographed. Although there is violence in the film, it is necessary to show the kind of place the prison is certainly not gratuitous. The main theme is hope, not despair, and the violence serves only as a real. The key to the film's structure, I think, is that it's not about its hero, but about our relationship with him - our curiosity, our pity, our admiration. If Andy had been the heroic center, bravely enduring, the film would have been less mysterious. But we wonder about this guy. Did he really kill those two people? Why does he keep so much to himself? Why can he stay in the prison yard like a free man? Why people value "Shawshank" so much. May

be it plays more like a spiritual experience than a movie To be honest, People like excitement at the movies. Films about "redemption" are approached with great care. A lot of people are not thrilled by the prospect of a great film. But there's an ego of hope, and when a film offers one, it's likely to have staying power even if it doesn't grab an audience. Being a huge film fan myself, this is a film I enjoy from start to finish, this movie is beautiful and genius. It shows what prison life is like at the time which may not be innovative because obviously it has been done before, but it still is a movie that is lightened up by the superb actings of Tim Robbins (Andy Dufrane) and Morgan Freeman (Red). However, personally I think the ending was a bit sappy and didn't fit the movie while the whole movie was a work of art. In sum, the Shawshank Redemption is really a wonderful film! I’ve been shown by Andy's example that I have to keep true to myself, not lose hope, bide your time, set a quiet example and look for your chance. And the sentence(['sentəns] 判决 宣判) was two life imprisonments([im'prizənmənt] 监禁,关押;坐牢;下狱)(两个无期徒刑). He was sent into Shawshank prison.  That was a dark and gloomy(['ɡlu:mi] 黑暗的;沮丧的;阴郁的) hell with

mad prisoners, cruel warders('wɔ:də] 典狱官 ) and viperous(['vaipərəs] 毒蛇般的;阴险的;有毒的)and greedy wardenry(['wɔ:dənr:i] 监狱长).The first night Andy spent in it a new comer like Andy couldn’t bear the fear and kept crying and shouting. The result was he was taken out and beaten dead by the warders('wɔ:də] 典狱官). At that moment, Andy understood that if he wants to live he must be silent in Shawshank.( I want to quote a line from "Shawshank Redemption([ri'dempʃən] 赎回,拯救) ". "Hope is a good thing , maybe the best of things , and no good thing ever dies .

In Shawshank Andy knew an old prisoner Red(瑞德). They gradually became friends. Red was able to get some small goods for the prisoners(['prizənə] 囚犯). So Andy asked for a little hammer because of his interest in geology.

The life in Shawshank was full of danger. Andy, as a new prisoner, was often threatened and maltreated([mæl'tri:t] 虐待;滥用;粗暴对待) by some scoundrels(['skaundrəl] 恶棍;无赖;流氓)because he always refused their unbearable and disgusting([dis'ɡʌstiŋ] 令人厌恶的 令人恶心的)demand. In such a dark prison, no one could help him even if someone may want to. After two years, one day, Andy, Red and some other prisoners got the chance to rebuild the roof. They heard the head of the warders complaining that he had to pay high tax to government if he wanted to receive his brother’s inheritance([in'heritəns] 继承;遗传;遗产). Andy grabbed the opportunity and taught him a way to be exempt([iɡ'zempt] 免除;豁免) from taxation([tæk'seiʃən] 税收). The condition was to give each prisoner 3 bottles of ice beer. All the prisoners enjoyed the rare([rεə]) and short freedom leisurely(['leʒəli] 悠闲的;从容的). Red said,” It’s just like rebuilding the roof of our own house. We are free like God.” Another consequence was that from then on Andy got the protection from the head of the warders. And all the warders even the wardenry began to consult(咨询) Andy for financial affairs(财务). Consequently some of his special behaviors were permitted, such as pasting posters of some famous actresses on the wall or carving chessmen((国际象棋的)棋子)with his little hammer at night.

Prisoner as he was, Andy did more than a civilian([si'viljən] 平民,百姓). He kept writing one letter to the government every week to ask for bankroll

('bæŋkrəul] 资金;钞票)to develop the library in Shawshank. After nearly ten years, a new library finally appeared. When checking the books from the government Andy found a piece of disc([disk])of The Wedding of Figaro(费加罗的婚礼 唱片). Then he played the disc in the radio room, letting the dulcet(['dʌlsit] 美妙的;悦耳的;怡人的)music spread above Shawshank. Although he was imprisoned alone for two weeks as penalty(['penəlti] 罚款,罚金;处罚), he wasn’t regretful([ri'ɡretful]) at all, because of the greatest thing in the world——music, which represents another best thing for human——hope. In Andy’s words, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. Later on, Andy met a new prisoner Tommy, from whom Andy knew who was the real murderer that killed his wife. He immediately told the wardenry about this and naively([na'i:vli] 无邪地;天真烂漫地)thought the wardenry would help him leave there. But the wardenry didn’t do that. He killed Tommy. Andy had been laundering(['lɔ:ndəriŋ]洗涤;洗黑钱)money for the wardenry for a long time. So it’s impossible for the wardenry to set Andy, as a tool and an attester([ə'testə] 证明者;契据等的连属人)for his crime, free. At this moment, everything seemed to be over. Both Andy and the audience should despair.

 But the climax(['klaimæks] 高潮;顶点;层进法;极点)of the movie appears. At a night

with thunderstorm Andy escaped from Shawshank. Everyone including the wardenry and Red couldn’t believe it. The stone wall which Red asserted ([ə'sə:tid] 宣称;声称)wouldn’t be dug([dʌɡ] 挖) through even with six hundred years was dug through by Andy in two decades. He kept digging with that little hammer at night, the sound of which was mistaken for the sound of carving chessmen. And the hole on the wall was covered by a huge poster of a famous actress. At that night, Andy crawled([krɔ:l] 爬) through the narrow tunnel('tʌnəl] 隧道;坑道;洞穴通道)to a drain-pipe([drein] [paip])排水管)and then smashed([smæʃ] 粉碎;使破产;溃裂) it with a stone under the cover of thunderclap(雷霆一击). He was crawling(['krɔ:liŋ] 爬) while vomiting (['vɔmitiŋ] 呕吐)in the pipe which was as long as five football grounds by Red’s estimate(['estimeit] 估计). At length([leŋθ]最后), Andy got out of the pipe into a little river outside the prison. He walked to the middle of the river and ripped([ript] 撕;扯)his shirt, letting the rain wash all the filth([filθ] 污秽;肮脏;猥亵;不洁)

away. Under the lightning and thunder, Andy spread out his arms, regaining freedom. When reading the postcard from Andy, Red sighed,” Some birds aren’t meant to be caged, that’s all. Their feathers are just too bright.”

 Andy had said,” Life has only two choices——get busy living or get busy dying.” This is

the most impressive words in this movie. It influenced a lot of people including me. Everyone is able to be busy living, but not everyone can do that all the time. That’s why a few people have brilliant life; many remain mediocre ([,mi:di'əukə, 'mi:diəukə] 普通的;平凡的;中等的)

till the last minute of their life while some keep struggling to get out of poverty. We complain that God is unfair. We just despair when we are in all-time low. We take hands-off attitude(采取不干涉态度)

towards ourselves when others think we are failure, although we will weep(哭泣) in dreams. All of those share one reason——we forget that only we ourselves can save ourselves.

 Holding hope forever especially in desperation([despə'reiʃən] 绝望的境地;不顾一切拼命)and reminding myself to get busy living at any moment. That’s the most precious thing I got from this movie——The Shawshank Redemption. Today I will give a general judge to the performances of the film..

A blockbuster that tells the American justice revealed

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION

The story may sound simple, but the truth behind the words is remarkable. When I heard the name of the film first time, I considered the Shawshank to be a man’ name, but in fact it is a jail’s name——a hell in the world. Not only for the inhumanity of the jailors——they behaved brutally; but also for the jail gnawed at people’ heart by keeping them waiting and waiting as life passed. It seemed that only those utterly worthless people who gave up everything could survive. That’s where the story happened.

The part impressed me most is when Andy got out of the jail. He extended his arms in front of him in the heavy rain as if he were welcoming the fresh air and the freedom. At that moment, I saw the confidence win the darkness, discharging light dazzling the eyes in the dark blue sky. Under the light, I could feel my recreant heart being shivering as his voice said: “Remember, Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies!”

That’s why I like this film: it encourages people to fight to preserve the dignity of human beings, to appreciate the beauty of life, and the most importance is to keep hope forever. He once that is born, that is die. Everyone is the same. The only difference is whether busy living or busy dying. The film tells us that even a man can live once, but if he keeps confidence, keeps hope and works his life right, then once is enough. The congfidence is the bird that feels the light when the dawn is still dark, the hope is the chief happiness that this world affords, and the life should be full of the singing of the bird and the happiness hope brings. " What’s that do you think? It’s the trembling of the heart, the singing of the mind, the flying of the soul and the hope to be free.”

Remember, Red, hope is good thing, mabye the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

That’s the beauty of music. They can’t take that away from you.

I have to remind myself that some birds don’t mean to be caged . Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up. DOES rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.

Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free

Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman star in Frank Darabont's memorably moving prison-set fable, adapted from a short story by Stephen King. Robbins' young banker is accused of a double-murder but refuses to let his spirit be brokenMugged at the 1995 Oscars by Forrest Gump, this enduringly powerful prison drama promotes the unquenchable human spirit with an intelligence that the gooey Gump readily sacrificed. Despite the film's modest performance at the box office on its first release, Frank Darabont made a major splash with his assured directorial debut.Adapted by the director himself from a Stephen King short story - one that appeared in the same 'Different Seasons' collection that spawned the films Stand By Me and Apt Pupil - the plot has Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne, a man arriving in prison in 1946 on a double life sentence for the murder of his wife and her lover. Andy is an apparently decent man with a preternaturally calm disposition, who is quietly insistent about his own innocence. He befriends Red (Freeman), a veteran of the penal system, and their growing friendship over 20 years forms the backbone of the film - and provides a narrative pay-off as satisfying as it is heart-warming. Using a voiceover narration, much of which is taken verbatim from King's story, the film's great triumph is its sincerity, and even those moments that might have felt mawkish - the suicide of the old lag, for example, who fails to adjust to life on the outside - achieve the dignity of genuine tragedy. At nearly two and a half hours in length, it's a film with plenty of time on its hands yet, thanks to engagingly warm performances by Robbins and Freeman, it very rarely drags. Robbins in particular locates a

deep-seated humanity in his enigmatic banker (who unexpectedly benefits from his accounting skills), while the issues that Darabont is concerned with - faith, friendship, patience and hope - are woven seamlessly into the fabric of the story.T 12下一页<< 上篇:王尔德--看英伦美男品古典文学 -----[打印][关闭]-----下篇:影评:大侦探福尔摩斯 >> 查看所有关于《英文影评:肖申克的救赎(The Shawshank Redemption)》的评论昵称 评论内容 请文明用语 评论经审核后方可查看 热门《那山那人那狗》影评 《我的女友是机器人》:我能感到你的心跳 无条件拜服在周迅的演技下 爱有多深——《太极旗飘扬》 英文影评《功夫熊猫》(Kung Fu Panda)-影评网 雏菊不是玫瑰---评电影《雏菊》 英文影评:《克莱默夫妇》(Kramer vs. Kramer) - 影评网 英文影评:《幸福终点站》(The Terminal) 英文影评:贫民富翁(Slumdog Millionaire) 影评:暮光之城-无惧的爱(Twilight) 英文影评:《英国病人》The English Patient - 影评网 影评:《非诚勿扰》 相关海扁王英文影评(Kick-Ass) 越位英文影评(Linha de Passe) 拆弹部队英文影评 英文影评:阿凡达(Avatar) 影评:母亲(Mother) 英文影评:暮光之城(Twilight) 英文影评:哈利•波特与混血王子(Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen)

The Shawshank Redemption

My first feeling was shocking after I watched this movie, especially when the rock went through the picture of the lady. Before this, nobody would think Andy can finish one thing that is impossible to general people,as Red say,it will take hundreds of years to dig a tunnel with a samll hammer like this.

I watched this movie for three times, every time it takes me different feelings.I don’t kown much about history,so I can’t see some political questions. But it still have many obvious questions. We can see how dark of the society in that period, people was treated unjustly.

In this film,Andy is a very clever person, and always full of hope, even though Red tell him:hope is a dangerous thing, hope can drive a man insane. When Andy have a chance to reverse a verdict, someone destroyed it.So the tunnel worked.Andy diged a tunnel during this 19 years. This is incredible, but this is a truth already,at least in this movie.Never give up,this is Andy.

But there are more important things, that is freedom. It mentioned many times for free in this movie. In fact,no matter who are you,and where you are,the most thing you wanted is freedom. You will feel more dead than alive without freedom. So everyone in the prison want to go outside and nobody will ask what they are doing. This is also the reason of the escaping.

I like Red’s some words about freedom: I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing

about. Truth is, I don’t want to know. Some things are better left unsaid.I’d like to think they were singing about somethings so beautiful,it can’t expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it.I tell you, those voices

soared higher and farther than anybody in a great place dares to dream. It was as if some beautiful bird had flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man is Shawshank felt free.

Read this it may help you back to the film:

Red: Let me tell you something my friend: Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.

Red narrating: These walls are kind of funny like that. First you hate’em, th

en you get used to’em. Enough time passes, gets so you depend on them.

Andy Dufresne: Here’s where it makes the most sense. You need it so you don"t foget. Foget that there are palce in the world that aren’t made out of stone That there’s a---there’s a---there’s something inside that’s yours, that they can’t touch.

Andy Dufresne: That’s the beauty of music. They can’t take that away from yo u.

Red reading a note left by Andy: Remember, Red, hope is good thing, mabye the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

Red narrating: We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders and felt like freemen. h\*ll, we could have been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We

were the lords of all creation. As for Andy—-hespent that break hunkered

in

the shade, a strangelittle smile on his face.watching us drink his beer.

Red narrating: You could argue he’d done it to curry favor with the guards. Or, mabye make a few friends among us cons. Me, I think he did it just to feel normanl again, if only for a short while.

Red narrating: I have to remind myself that some birds don’t mean to be caged . Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up. Red narraing: I hope I can make it across the border, I hope the Pacific is as blue as I dreamed it is; I hope to see my friend again, and shake his hand; I hope.
