The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving. Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind. The mass of a body is a measure of its energy content. On quantum theory I use up more brain grease than on relativity. The physicists say that I am a mathematician, and the mathematicians say that I am a physicist. I am a completely isolated man and though everybody knows me, there are very few people who really know me. Then I would have felt sorry for the dear Lord. The theory is correct. - When asked by a student what he would have done if Sir Arthur Eddington's famous 1919 gravitational lensing experiment, which confirmed relativity, had instead disproved it. Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius— and a lot of courage— to move in the opposite direction. Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. As our circle of knowledge expands, so does the circumference of
darkness surrounding it. Before God we are all equally wise— and equally foolish. Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen. Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater. Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school. Equations are more important to me, because politics is for the present, but an equation is something for eternity. God does not care about our mathematical difficulties. He integrates empirically. Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love. I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones. I don't pretend to understand the universe— it's much bigger than I am. I love to travel, but hate to arrive. I never think of the future. It comes soon enough. I think that only daring speculation can lead us further and not accumulation of facts. I want to know God's thoughts; the rest are details. If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut. If I would be a young man again and had to decide how to make my living, I would not try to become a scientist or scholar or teacher. I would rather choose to be a plumber or a peddler in the hope to find that modest degree of independence s
till available under present circumstances. If my theory of relativity is proven correct, Germany will claim me as a German and France will say I am a man of the world. If it's proven wrong, France will say I am a German and Germany will say I am a Jew. If we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it? Innovation is not the product of logical thought, even though the final product is tied to a logical structure. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity. It is harder to crack a prejudice than an atom. Laws alone can not secure freedom of expression; in order that every man present his views without penalty there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population. Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving. Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile. Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding. Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That's relativity. Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. Science is a wonderful thing if one does not have to earn one's living at it. Subtle is the Lord, but malicious He is not.
The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits. The hardest thing to understand in the world is the income tax. The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is at all comprehensible. The only real valuable thing is intuition. The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them. The release of atomic energy has not created a new problem. It has merely made more urgent the necessity of solving an existing one. The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources. The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday thinking. Truth is what stands the test of experience. Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value. Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character. What really interests me is whether God had any choice in the creation of the world. If I had to live my life over again, I would live it as a trader of goods. If I give you a pfennig, you will be one pfennig richer and I'll be one pfennig poorer. But if I give you an idea, you will have a new idea, but I shall still have it, too. It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer. The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest.
Quantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory says a lot, but does not really bring us any closer to the secret of the 'old one'. I, at any rate, am convinced that He does not throw dice. I believe in Spinoza's God, Who reveals Himself in the lawful harmony of the world, not in a God Who concerns Himself with the fate and the doings of mankind. Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving...

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.
A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.
3
The further the spiritual evolution of mankind advances, the more certain it seems to me that the path to genuine religiosity does not lie through the fear of life, and the fear of death, and blind faith, but through striving after rational knowledge.
4
...one of the strongest motives that lead men to art and science is escape from everyday life with its painful crudity and hopeless dreariness, from the fetters of one's own ever-shifting desires. A finely tempered nature longs to escape from the personal life into the world of objective perception and thought.
5
He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.
6
A human being is a part of a whole, called by us 'universe', a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.
7
Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.
8
Imagination is more important than knowledge.
9
Gravitation is not responsible for people falling in love.
10
The hardest thing in the world to understand is the income tax.
11
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
12
A person starts to live when he can live outside himself.
13
Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.
14
I never think of the future. It comes soon enough.
The eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility.
16
Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.
17
Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.
18
Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from weak minds.
19
There are two ways to live your life - one is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is a miracle.
20
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.
21
Equations are more important to me, because politics is for the present, but an equation is something for eternity.
22
If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut.
23
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe.
24
As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, as far as they are certain,
they do not refer to reality.
I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
26
No, this trick won't work...How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love?
My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind.
28
The release of atom power has changed everything except our way of thinking...the solution to this problem lies in the heart of mankind. If only I had known, I should have become a watchmaker.
29
Most teachers waste their time by asking questions which are intended to discover what a pupil does not know, whereas the true art of questioning has for its purpose to discover what the pupil knows or is capable of knowing.
30
Never regard your study as a duty, but as the enviable opportunity to learn to know the liberating influence of beauty in the realm of the spirit for your own personal joy and to the profit of the community to which your later work belongs.
31
Humiliation and mental oppression by ignorant and selfish teachers wreak havoc in the youthful mind that can never be undone and often exert a baleful influence in later life.
32
The aim (of education) must be the training of independently acting and thinking individuals who, however, can see in the service to the community their highest life achievement.
33
Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard duty.
34
In the teaching of geography and history a sympathetic understanding (should) be fostered for the characteristics of the different peoples of the world, especially for those who we are in the habit of describing as "primitive.
35
It is better for people to be like the beasts...they should be more intuitive; they should not be too conscious of what they are doing while they are doing it.

36
Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.
37
The life of the individual has meaning only insofar as it aids in making the life of every living thing nobler and more beautiful. Life is sacred, that is to say, it is the supreme value, to which all other values are subordinate.

Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. That's relativity.2、「没有宗教的科学是跛的,没有科学的宗教是瞎的。」 The mass of a body is a measure of its energy content.5、物理学家们说我是数学家,数学家们又把我归为物理工作者。 The physicists say that I am a mathematician, and the mathematicians say that I am a physicist. I am a completely isolated man and though everybody knows me, there are very few people who really know me.6、那我只能对亲爱的主表示遗憾。 Then I would have felt sorry for the dear Lord. The theory is correct. - When asked by a student what he would have done if Sir Arthur Eddington's famous 1919 gravitational lensing experiment, which confirmed relativity, had instead disproved it.7、一个聪明的笨蛋可以把事情做得更大,把事情做得更复杂,也更暴力。 Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius— and a lot of
courage— to move in the opposite direction.8、一个人从未犯错是因为他不曾尝试新鲜事物。原文:Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.9、当知识的圆周扩大之时,黑暗的圆周也一样。原文:As our circle of knowledge expands, so does the circumference of darkness surrounding it.10、在上帝面前我们都一样聪明——也都一样愚蠢。原文:Before God we are all equally wise— and equally foolish.11、常识就是人到十八岁为止所累积的各种偏见。原文:Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age eighteen.12、不要担心数学问题;我保证我的问题要大得多。原文:Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater.13、教育就是当一个人把在学校所学全部忘光之後剩下的东西。原文:Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school.14、公式对我更重要,因为政治是为了现在,而公式是永恒的。原文:Equations are more important to me, because politics is for the present, but an equation is something for eternity.15、上帝并不在乎我们的数学困难。 God does not care about our mathematical difficulties. Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love.17、我无法知道第三次世界大战会有什么武器登场,但第四次世界大战中人们肯定用的是木棍和石块。原文:I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.19、我并不假装理解宇宙——它比我大得多。原文:I don't pretend to understand the universe— it's much bigger than I am.20、我喜欢旅行,但我不喜欢到达。原文:I love to travel, but hate to arrive.21、我从不展望未来。 I never think of the future. I think that only daring speculation can lead us further and not accumulation of facts.23、我想知道上帝的构思;其他的都是细节。原文:I want to know God's thoughts; the rest are details.24、如果A代表一个人的成功,那么A等于x加y加z。 If A is a success in life, then A equals x plus y plus z. Work is x; y is play; and z is keeping your mouth shut.25、如果我再次成为一个展望人生的年轻人,我不会选择成为一个科学家、学者或是教师。 If I would be a young man again
