Analysis of the Growth Process of Huck

Abstract

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the great masterpiece of the American writer Mark Twain. Hemingway may have been praising when, in the opening chapter of Green Hills of Africa (1935), he said that “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. It’s the best book we’ve had. All American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.” The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn not only emerges not just as a novel that explores the racial and moral world of its time, but also through the controversies that continue to surround it, as an artifact of those same moral and racial tensions as they have evolved into the present day.

Key Words: adventures, freedom, discovery, growth

Ⅰ.Introduction

From the ancient time to the modern age, people all over the world attach great importance to the growth of youth. Not only because the youth are the nations’ backbone of the future, but also because human beings have a never-receding complex toward the growth itself. Hence among the literary works, writers often adopt adventure way make the protagonists gain experience and further growth. Huck is the main character in Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and he finally grow up through the exciting and extraordinary adventure. This paper through the adventures of Huck analyses Huck’s inner conflicts, and ideological changes and growth process.

Ⅱ. Escape to Freedom

Huck-the protagonist and narrator of the novel-is the thirteen years old boy and comes from the lowest levels of white society: his father is a drunk and a ruffian who disappears for months on end. Huck himself is dirty and frequently homeless. Although he is being “reformed” by the Widow Douglas at the beginning of the novel, Huck is not used to “sivilize”. Huck is none too thrilled with his new life of cleanliness, manners, church and school, but he sticks it out at the bequest of Tom, who tells him that in order to take part in his new “robbers’ gang” Huck must stay “respectable.” The

- 1 -

antagonistic psychology of Huck against "civilized manners" has shown in the first chapter of novel: “I got into my old rags and my sugar-hogshead again, and was free and satisfied” and “She put me in them new clothes again, and I couldn’t do nothing but sweat and sweat, and feel all cramped up. Well, then, the old thing commenced again”. This so-called civilized lifestyle manacles the vitality and vigor of protagonist and presses him the nature of freedom. In order to get rid of the father's cruelty and traditional education chains, Huck is determined to escape and pursue the freedom of life. Huck himself is still free, the natural being not yet molded and ruined by an environment that seeks to civilize him. What tempted Huck was the free and unrestricted life, for both the kin family and the adopted family were suffocating and failed to provide proper guidance and tender love he awfully needed during the adolescent period.

Ⅲ. Discovery of self

Huck is a thirteen year old ill-educated white boy and is adopted by the Widow Douglas; Jim is a black slave who escaped from Miss Watson's family. At the beginning of the novel, the relationship between Huck and Jim is not equal at all. Influenced by the social conventional concept, Huck has a strong bias against black slave Jim. In Huck’s eyes, Jim is more inferior to him; in fact, he is not a real person. Like other white people, Huck does not think black people have the same dignity with the white. So Huck often plays tricks on him and never concern about his feeling. However, in the fifteenth chapter, what happened on them thoroughly changed Huck’s view on Jim. One foggy night, Huck, in the canoe, gets separated from Jim and the raft. He tries to paddle back to it, but the fog is so thick that he loses all sense of direction. After a lonely time adrift, Huck reunites with Jim, who is asleep on the raft. Jim is thrilled to see Huck alive, but Huck tries to trick Jim, pretending that Jim dreamed their entire separation. Jim gets mad at Huck for making a fool of him after he had worried about him so much. “It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger; but I done it, and I warn’t ever sorry for it afterwards, neither. I didn’t do him no more mean tricks, and I wouldn’t done that one if I’d a knowed it would make him feel that way.” (Twain, 1885:118) From this we can see that Huck could never think of black people would also have the dignity. After that incident, Huck began to change his view on black slaves and start to rupture with the conventional concept. Therefore, in Huck's growth process, Jim plays a significant role because of his honesty and dignity that Huck struggled against inner world and

conventional concept. Huck is experiencing the transformation from innocence to experience. One may wonder why Mark Twain would choose to write an antislavery novel some twenty years after the end of the Civil War. One way to analyze this decision is to read slavery as an allegorical representation of the condition of blacks in the United States even after the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a a tough practice to justify; but when white Southerners enacted racist laws or policies under a professed motive of self-defense against newly freed blacks, far fewer people, Northern or Southern, saw the act as immoral. In exposing the hypocrisy of slavery, Twain demonstrated how racism distorts the oppressors as much as does those who are oppressed.

Ⅳ. Awareness of Social Evils

No matter how hard Huck and Jim tried, they still unable to escape the cruel world. One morning about daybreak, Huck and Jim continue down the river. On one of his solo expeditions in the canoe, Huck comes upon two men on shore fleeing some trouble and begging to be let onto the raft. From that day on, there are four people on the raft: Huck, Jim, “Duck” and “Dauphin”. The two men do not know each other and the younger man declares himself an impoverished English duck, and gets Huck and Jim wait on him and treat him like royalty. The old man then reveals his true identity as the Dauphin, Louis ⅩⅥ’s long lost son. Huck and Jim then wait on him as they had the “Duck”. The two men, in fact, both professional swindlers, decide to team up. Soon Huck and Jim realize the two are swindlers: “But, Huck, dese king o’ ourn is reglar rapscallions; dat’s jist what dey is; dey’s reglar rapscallions.” and “Well, that’s what I’m a-saying; all kings is mostly rapscallions, as fur as I can make out.”, but to prevent “quarrels,” he does not let on that he knows. The Duck and Dauphin pull several scams in the small towns along the river. Coming into the town, they hear the story of a man, Peter Wilks, who has recently died and left everything to his two brothers, who should be arriving from England any day. The Duck and Dauphin enter the town claiming to be Wilks’s brother. Wilks’s three daughters welcome them and quickly set about liquidating the estate. A few towns people become skeptical, and Huck, who now admires the Wilks sister, thinks “I says to myself, this is ANOTHER one that’s I’m letting him rob her of her money. And when she got through they all jest laid theirselves out to make me feel at home and know I was amongst friends. I felt so ornery and low down and mean that I says to myself, my mind’s up made up; I’ll hive that money for them or bust.” (Twain, 1885:237) and decides to thwart the con. He

steals the dead man’s gold from the Duck and the Dauphin but is forced to stash it in the dead man’s coffin. He then reveals all to the eldest Wilks sister. Huck’s plan for exposing the Duck and the Dauphin is about to unfold when Wilks’s real brothers arrive from England. They angry towns’ people hold both sets of Wilks claimants, and the Duck and the Dauphin just barely escape in the melee. Fortunately for the sisters, the gold is found. Unfortunately, for Huck and Jim, the Duck and the Dauphin make it back to the raft just as Huck and Jim are pushing off. The encounter with the Duck and the Dauphin reminds Huck and Jim of their relative powerlessness. Although the Duck and the Dauphin are criminals, they are free, adult, white men who have the power to turn in both Huck and Jim. Despite Huck’s feeling that one is “mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft,” the outside world and its evil have now firmly established a presence on the river. As Huck and Jim travel further, the Mississippi becomes a source of foreboding instead of freedom, a conduit toward the American “heart of darkness” – the plantations of deep South. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a veritable recreation of living models. Huck and his father, Jim, the swindlers (the Duck and the Dauphin), Colonel Sherburn and the drunkard Boggs- all these characters had prototypes in real life. The portrayal of individual incidents and characters achieved intense verisimilitude of detail. Serious problems are being discussed through the narration of a little illiterate boy. The fact of the wilderness juxtaposed with civilization, the people half wild and half civilized, many of whom are coarse, vulgar and brutal, such as the loafers of the town of Brickville, amusing themselves by torturing animals – pouring kerosene on dogs and setting them on fire, democratic citizens quickly changed into violent mobs, ready to take the law into their own hands and lynch people, or to seize people and pour hot tar over them and ride them out of town on a rail, and the fact of brutal slavery and of human beings – Blacks – being sold in the market places like animals, the Shepherdson – Grangerford feud shown in all its senseless, sickening perversion of a code of “honor,” the poignant portrayal of swindlers (the Duck and the Dauphin) which was a common sight in the South than – all these and many other incidents are depicted in true-to-life detail as the background against which Huck Finn’s awareness of good and evil develops.

Ⅴ. Boy to Man—Growth

After a few more small scams, the Duck and the Dauphin commit their worst crime yet; they sell Jim to a local farmer, telling him Jim is a runaway for whom a large reward is being offered. “After all this long journey, and after all we’d done for them

- 4 -

scoundrels, here it was all come to nothing, everything all busted up and ruined, because they could have the heart to serve Jim such a trick as that, and make him a slave again all his life, and amongst strangers, too, for forty dirty dollars.” Huck first decides to write to Tom Sawyer to tell Miss Watson where Jim is. But Huck soon realizes that Miss Watson would sell Jim anyway, and as soon as Huck’s own part in the story got out, he would be ashamed of having helped a slave, a black man, escape. Overwhelmed by his predicament, Huck suddenly realizes that this quandary must be God’s punishment of him for helping Jim. Huck tries to pray for forgiveness, but finds he can not because his heart is not in it. He writes the letter to Miss Watson. Before beginning to pray, though, he thinks as follows:

“But somehow I couldn’t seem to strike no places to harden me against him, but only the other kind. I’d see him standing my watch on top of his’n, ’stead of calling me, so I could go on sleeping; and see him how glad he was when I come back out of the fog; and when I come to him again in the swamp, up there where the feud was; and such-like times; and would always call me honey, and pet me and do anything he could think of for me, and how good he always was; and at last I struck the time I saved him by telling the men we had small-pox aboard, and he was so grateful, and said I was the best friend old Jim ever had in the world, and the ONLY one he’s got now; and then I happened to look around and see that paper.” (Twain, 1885:289)

After a minute he decides, “All right, then, I’ll go to hell!” and he resolves to “steal Jim out of slavery.” Twain gives his young hero very adult problems. In the second place, escaping “down” the river, a cruel irony in itself, provides the episodic structure, which, like in a picaresque novel, is the narrative thread that holds together the developing relationship between the two runaways on the raft. The escape, the quest for freedom, is literal for both Huck and Jim as they flee from Pap and Miss Watson. It may also be seen as symbolic on several planes: historical, philosophical and moral. The flight down the river is a flight from the complexities of the ever-expanding, westward-moving settlements of the new civilization. Finally, having learned about the evil of the world during their trip in the various towns and villages along the way, Huck, meantime, is facing a big moral problem. The laws of society say he must turn Jim to his “owner.” But the moral climax of the novel comes in the thirty-first chapter, when Huck decides that he will “go to hell” rather than turn in Jim. Huck thinks deeply about morality and then decides to break the law. The slave, to Huck, is now a man,

The use by human beings of voice sounds, and often written symbols representing these sounds, in organized combinations and patterns in order to express and communicate thoughts and feelings.
