Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries.Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins(来源) of the food.Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt? You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from “field to plate”, is called “food miles”.A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer’s field to the person who buys the food.Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer(消费者).Why is this, and what are the effects(影响) of these long distances?
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market so the food didn’t have to travel very far.The consumers also did not travel very far, because they went to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes..
Some countries have to import(进口) most of their food. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates(UAE), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries.Even food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What’s wrong with “food miles”? Is this not a good way of increasing international trade? I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons.First of all, because food travels such long distances.we need more planes, lorries, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or petrol, so there is more pollution and more global(全球的) warming. In addition, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty.Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journey. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer.Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food. 1.What is called “food miles” according to this passage?
A.The origins of the food. B.The effects of long distances. C.The journey from field to plate. D.The disadvantages of imported food. 2.The underlined word “available” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “______”.
A.easy to get B.not busy C.willing to talk D.impossible to get 3.Some countries like the United Arab Emirates have to import most of their food because of ____.
A.long distances B.difficult climates C.fresh and tasty food D.modern technology 4.The writer uses the LAST paragraph mostly to encourage readers to ______.

Her brothers and sisters took turns giving her leg a daily massage. Four times a day, they helped her do special exercises for her leg. Amazingly, by the time Wilma was 9 years old, she was able to walk again. Before long, she started playing basketball and running. ―I think we are knocking at the door of immortality(永生),‖ said Michael Zey, a Montclair State University business professor and author of two books on the future. ―I think by 2075 we will see it and that’s a conservative estimate(保守的估计).‖
At the conference in San Francisco, Donald Louria, a professor at New Jersey Medical School in Newark said advances in using genes as well as nanotechnology(纳米技术) make it likely that humans will live in the future beyond what has been possible in the past. ―There is a great push so that people can live from 120 to 180 years,‖ he said. ―Some have suggested that there is no limit and that people could live to 200 or 300 or 500 years.‖
However, many scientists who study in ageing are doubtful about human body is just not designed to last past about 120 years. Even with healthier lifestyles and less disease, they say failure of the brain and organs will finally lead all humans to death.
Scientists also differ on what kind of life the super aged might live. ―It remains to be seen if you pass 120, you know; could you be healthy enough to have good quality of life?‖ said Leonard Pooh, director of the University of Georgia Gerontology Centre. ―At present people who could get to that point are not in good health at all.‖

When did you last see a polar bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These ―Polar Bears‖ are people who meet frequently in the winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements. First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.
Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the dangers of a condition in which the body’s temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.
The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.
The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim year-round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says. ―When I go into the water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.‖
36. The members of the Polar Bear Club must meet the following requirements except that
A. they must reach the age of 60
B. they should be easy to make friends with
C. they must swim outdoors at least 8 times in the four cold months
D. they must agree to swim outdoors from November through February

A. believe swimming is helpful both in winter and in summer
B. encourage people to take part in cold-water swimming actively
C. have different ideas about the medical effects of cold-water swimming
D. point out the possible danger of blood illness during cold-water swimming
38. According to the passage, some doctors believe it is true that .
A. Polar Bears are bears swimming in freezing water
B. you are healthy if cold-water swimming turns your skin color blue
C. cold-water swimming can make the body temperature dangerously high
D. cold-water swimming causes more heart attacks in summer than in winter

We have always been interested in the moon. 2000 years ago people already knew it moved around the earth and where it would be in the sky at different times of the year. At that time, everything about the moon was learned by watching it carefully in the sky.
When scientists could use telescopes(望远镜) to study the moon more closely, their ideas began to change. They could see the moon was made of rocks. Most scientists thought moon rocks would be different from those on Earth. This was because they believed the moon had once been a planet that had been caught in the earth’s gravity millions of years earlier.
In 1969 moon rocks were finally brought to the earth and studied. Much to their surprise, scientists found that, except for water, the moon and the earth were made of the same things. Once again new ideas were needed for this new information.
After years of study, most scientists now think that the moon was once part of Earth. They believe very early in its history, maybe 4 million years ago, something about the size of Mars hit Earth. This sent billions of rocks into space around our planet. These rocks slowly joined together and after many years became the moon.
In the future, even though our ideas about the moon may change again, we will still be interested in it. 29. From the passagewe know the moon was made of __________.

I came to study in the USA a year ago. Yet I did not know the real American society until I injured (伤害) in an accident, because after the accident I had to see a doctor — and to court (法院).
After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and decided to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $ 200 for what he had done. I was very surprised. He had good reason to the person who was responsible (负责) for my injury. I’d have to have a good lawyer (律师). And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him.
But every time I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another, yet he charged me $ 115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $ 215.
My lawyer knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided not to ask for him again. And he made me pay him $ 770.
Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Because of my inexperience, I told the insurance company (保险公司)the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time, and I left without getting a cent.
My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship or honor. Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.
33. The writer’s roommate offered to help him because __________.
A. he thought it was a chance to make some money
B. he felt sorry for the writer
C. he knew the doctor was a very good one
D. he wanted the writer to have a good lawyer
34. A good doctor is necessary for the writer to __________.
A. be properly treated

Scene 1
On a wild mountain, two goats met on a rock just over a high cliff (峭壁). The rock was so narrow that there was neither room for them to pass each other nor to turn round and go back. One of them with great care laid himself down on the narrow rock, pressing as close to the rock as he could. Then the other goat gently and softly stepped over his friend, till, safely past him, he could lightly get away.
The goat that had lain down then drew himself up, safe and free to leap again from rock to rock, and eat the sweet grass on the hills.
Scene 2
Two other goats met on the banks of a wild, rushing stream. They found there was a tree across the stream. It formed a bridge from one side to the other.

In March 2014, Australia opened junior high education to Chinese students, allowing them to study in Australian schools from the seventh grade.
“When more Chinese students are going to study abroad at a younger age, the opening of Australian junior high schools offers Chinese students and their parents one more good choice,” Tian Litie, director of the Australian Department of Chivast Education International, said at the China International Education Exhibition Tour over the weekend.
Australia will see a rise in the number of Chinese junior and senior high school students studying in the country. Tian showed the reasons for it: lower admission (入学许可) requirements and low-cost education because of a favorable exchange rate (费率). According to Tian, in public schools in Australia a student should pay A$13,000 to A$15,000 ($10,000 to $12,000) a year.
“Now the exchange rate of the Australian dollar to renminbi is below five, which means the cost is lower than that of Chinese students studying at junior and senior high schools in many other hot places, such as Britain and the US,” said Tian.
Lin Lina from Beijing plans to send her daughter to a senior high school in Australia, was among them.
“My daughter is good at English and would like to study abroad early,” said Lin, whose daughter is now a ninth-grader in Beijing. “We came for more information after we learned that the environment and education in Australia are good.”
Eliza Chui, education officer for North Asia at the Australian Consulate-General in Shanghai, said that Australia is attractive not only because it provides an environment for learning English, but also because students are trained to have critical (批判性的) thinking and be independent. 31. According to Tian Litie, we know that ______.
A. more and more Chinese students study abroad at a younger age
B. more and more Australian universities are open to Chinese students
C. Chinese students are only allowed to study in Australia from senior high school
D. a student should pay A$10,000 to A$12,000 a year in public schools in Australia
32. What does the word “it” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Australia allows Chinese students to study in its schools.
B. More and more Chinese students go abroad at a younger age.
C. More Chinese junior and senior high school students will study in Australia.
D. Australian schools offer Chinese students and their parents one more good choice.
33. Lin Lina plans to send her daughter to Australia because ______.
A. her daughter has travelled to Australia before
B. she can’t afford to send her daughter to other countries C. her daughter is an independent student with critical thinking
D. she learned that the environment and education in Australia are good
34. According to the article, which of the following is TRUE?
A. The cost of studying in American schools is lower than in Australia.
B. The exchange rate of the Australian dollar is of advantage to Chinese students.
C. It’s more difficult for Chinese students to enter Australian junior high schools.
D. Few students choose to study in Britain or the US because of too much money.
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A. You should think twice before you decide to go abroad.
B. More and more Chinese students choose to study abroad.
C. Australian schools will attract more and more Chinese students.
D. Australian schools have much more advantages than other schools in the world.

I remembered Julie coming to the front of the classroom after class one autumn day in September 1976. While most of the other students hurriedly left to enjoy the pleasant weather or to relax at the student union, Julie remained to ask me questions about the next week’s exam. She had clearly already done some serious studying.
Julie never made it to the exam. The day after our conversation, she was hit by a large truck as she rode a bike through a crossroads. I was sad to hear that Julie lay unconscious (昏迷的) in a hospital across town from our university.
Nurses silently came and went from Julie’s room. Her parents stood nearby quietly. Then the doctor entered the room and said to Julie’s parents and two brothers, “Your Julie has only a few hours to live.” He continued to ask, “Would you think about donating some of Julie’s organs (器官)?”
At the same time in a neighboring city, a woman called Mary was trying to see better in her small living room. Her eyes followed every movement of her lively two-year-old baby. This mother was storing up memories when she could no longer see her child. Several cities away, a young father called John was reading to his two sons in the hospital. However, he was told to have only weeks to live. His only hope was a kidney transplant (肾脏移植).
The two parents looked at each other, the doctor could see tears in their eyes. “Yes. Julie had once said she wanted to donate her organs in the event of her death. Julie always gave to others while she was alive. She would like to give in death.”
Within twenty-four hours, Mary was told that she would receive one of Julie’s eyes, and John was
told to start preparing for a kidney transplant. Julie’s other organs would give life to other waiting patients.
“Julie died right after her twentieth birthday. Nothing could possibly be as heartbreaking as the death of your child,” says Julie’s mother. She continues, “But Julie’s life was a gift to us. Knowing A. Hard-working. B. Helpful. C. Clever. D. Selfish.

Have you ever thought of your purpose in life? If you don’t, you have to think about it seriously. You will lose yourself if you to know what you really want in your life. Here are some about taking steps towards finding your life’s purpose.
Firstly, make a list of the things you do for fun, including some jobs that you prefer, your and so on. Imagine you’re a millionaire with no worries about money, how would you choose to your time? Add those things the list, even if you don’t do them at present. This list is about your passions—the things that you would do for the pleasure they give you. Then the names of people you admire most, and the reasons why they attract you. You might admire an inventor for his love for creating something Or you might admire an actress for always being true to herself. Take these admirations of others as a way for you to live in the world.
Finally, make a list of the things you do naturally thinking about them. Such talents may be an eye for detail or a great sense of humor. Some people are at math or music, but there are plenty of other types of talents as well. It’s better for us to use our talents in service of our life purpose.

This anniversary was so important that it was celebrated the whole year.
Another common anniversary is the wedding anniversary. It’s the date when a couple are married. The main wedding anniversaries are the silver (after 25 years of marriage), the golden (after 50 years), and the diamond anniversary (after 60 years).

Li Xin: Ms. Jocelyn Chey, as we know, there are more and more Chinese students
studying in Australia. Since Australia is a multicultural society, it is
probably hard for Chinese students to fit in with it. As an Australian, do you
have any advice or recommendations for our youth?
Chey: As for Chinese students, they have to be a little bit more open-minded.
After all, n’t go overseas to find the country just the same with our
own. So if you go overseas, you should expect things to be different. I hope
the Chinese students can be patient and find some things to enjoy.
Li Xin: Yes, but to open up one’s mind, one needs to prepare. How do you
recommend them to do before going abroad?
Chey: I think, when students are going overseas, they might worry about whether
they will be lonely, homesick or safe. So if the student has always lived
with the family and , it will be
hard for him to get used to being overseas. Different from young
Australians, Chinese young people are not so used to being independent,
such as traveling on their own. Perhaps in preparing to go overseas, young
people could try to travel in China on their own. We mentioned safety,
yeah? Really Australia is a safe place, however, we do have crime. So it is
not very safe in some places. When you go to a city, the first thing is to find
out from the local people which are the safe and not safe places.
Li Xin: It’s really very kind of you to tell us so much valuable information. Thank
you indeed.

B. Lucy likes travelling in big cities on her own.
C. Jack has done few things by himself so far.
D. Lin Tao once saved Mrs. Sun’s life from a fire.
34. According to Chey, what should be the first thing to do when you go to a city in Australia?

There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house, and the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea at it. A Dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep, and the
other two were resting their arms on it, and talking over its head. ―Very
uncomfortable for the Dormouse,‖ thought Alice; ―only, as it’s asleep, I believe it
doesn’t mind.‖
The table was a large one, but the three were all crowded together at one
corner of it. ―No room! No room!‖ they cried out when they saw Alice coming.
―There’s plenty of room!‖ said Alice angrily, and she sat down in a large
arm-chair at one end of the table.
―Have some wine,‖ the March Hare said in an encouraging tone.
Alice looked all round the table, but there was nothing on it but tea. ―I don’t see any wine,‖ she said.
―There isn’t any,‖ said the March Hare.
―Then it was impolite of you not to offer it,‖ said Alice angrily.
―It wasn’t very of you to take your seat without invitation,‖ said the March Hare. ―I didn’t know it was your table,‖ said Alice; ―it’s laid for a great many more than three.‖ ―Your hair wants cutting,‖ said the Hatter. He had been watching Alice for some time. ―You should learn not to give your personal ideas,‖ Alice said seriously; ―it’s very rude.‖
The Hatter opened his eyes very wide on hearing this; but all he said was, ―Why is a raven(乌鸦) like a writing-desk?‖
―Come, we shall have some fun now!‖ said Alice. ―I’m glad they’ve begun asking riddles(谜语).—I believe I can guess that,‖ she said loudly.
―Do you mean that you think you can find out the answer to it?‖ said the March Hare.
―Exactly so,‖ said Alice.
―Then you should say what you mean,‖ the March Hare went on.
―I do,‖ Alice quickly replied; ―at least—at least I mean what I say—that’s the same thing, you know.‖
…
Finally, they all began to laugh at Alice.

Homesickness can be a terrible feeling for anyone who travels away from their home town, country or simply away from the house they live in for a period of time. It is a strong feeling of wanting to go back to your own places very much. Some people get homesick easily while never experience it at all.
Different people deal with homesickness in different ways. Some ring home and have a chat with the people who they think ‗home‘ – often their mum or dad. This may be a good still there and that you will see them soon. However, it can make the homesickness even be home even more and make you realise you miss your loved ones. For this very reason, some people find better not to contact home but to let the feeling pass by doing fun activities. This can not only work as a good way to lonely feelings that homesickness can cause, but can also work well towards helping you get used to the place which you are living or staying in. Reminding yourself that where you are can make you see the bigger picture; that home is great, but where I am right now is also great different reasons!
In German there is a(n) which is quite opposite to homesickness and that is ‗Fernweh‘. This means the feeling of wanting to get away and see new places.

The young turtle has been swimming for three months now in the same
warm shallow bay, dreaming of calm water and plenty of food. But as the
days begin to shorten and the night comes earlier and earlier, the water grows
colder. It drops to fifty degrees Fahrenheit(华氏). Swimming is harder. Its
heartbeat slows—and almost stops. The young turtle is in danger of losing its
life.
Ten days before Thanksgiving, Max Nolan, a ten-year-old boy, and his mother begin their December to search for turtles who are often cold and trapped and seem dead—turtles whose lives they may be able to save.
Max and his mother and the other volunteers do an important job. All sea turtles are threatened or endangered. Among them Kemp‘s ridleys are the most endangered. Right now on our planet there are fewer than eight thousand Kemp‘s ridley turtles left.
Max is far in front of his mother when he sees a turtle washed up by the surf. He runs up to it and shouts to his mom, ―Got one!‖ The turtle is cold. Its eyes are open, but the turtle is not moving at all. It might be dead or still alive.
Max remembers the instructions given to all the volunteers. He picks up the turtle, which weighs about five pounds, and moves it above the high-tide mark to keep it from washing out to sea. Then he runs to find seaweed to protect it from the wind. He finds a stick to mark where it is, and next, he and his mother go to the nearest telephone and call the sea-turtle hot line for help.

April will bring a new product – the Apple Watch – into the
market. Last week, the watch was firstly introduced by Tim Cook,
Apple's CEO. The price of the watch will differ from $349 to $1,099,
depending on its size, strap and whether it is a sports or regular
version. Apple engineers and designers have put in a lot of thought and
hard work into creating this "small screen" on your wrist(手腕). The "sensor" on the screen not only detects your finger, but knows the difference between when you are tapping, and when you are pressing harder.
The watch also has ―haptic feedback(触觉反馈)‖. You can send personal messages to your friend - such as drawing a star or a special sign with your fingers, or tapping the watch, say 3 times, and your friend will receive those taps on their wrist.
Besides telling the time, the watch will use 'bluetooth' to connect with your iPhone and show calls or text messages that come in.
— 4 —
According to Tim Cook, the watch may open up a whole new area of applications that we had never thought of. Some car factories like BMW have developed an app that allows its car owners to open their cars with the watch. A 'Hotels' app may allow you to open the door to your hotel room without worrying about losing the smart-card. And finally, even airlines are jumping in - passengers may be able to simply wave their wrist to check into their flight.
The biggest use of the watch, however, is as your personal fitness coach. The watch can measure your pulse (heartbeat) using a sensor at the bottom of the watch. It also has the same "accelerometer" as your iPhone, so it knows when you are moving, and also how much you are walking or running. It will remind you if you have been sitting for too long without much activity. Many stores are planning to stop selling the Nike, Jawbone and FitBit devices(设备) to welcome the Apple Watch. Will Apple Watch really replace these devices and make fitness much more fun?
32. We can learn from the passage that the Apple Watch ________.

As Keira climbed into bed, she thought about tomorrow‘s field trip. Her
class was going to a presentation by a West African traditional storyteller.
Keira was excited because she was of West African descent. Her
great-grandmother had come to the United States from Senegal, a country in
West Africa. Until now, Keira hadn‘t thought much about her roots(根源).
Early the next morning, Keira looked everywhere for something to
show her West African roots. She dug through every drawer, but she couldn‘t
find anything that really stood out. Finally, she put on a white shirt and jeans. Although she wore ordinary clothes, she hoped that her interest in her West African roots would not go unnoticed.
At the community center, Keira was lucky enough to get a front-row seat. The first speaker talked about African writers and how they often use traditional stories with traditional characters, such as the Tortoise and the Spider. The speaker mentioned writers her mother and grandmother liked! Also, Tortoise was a favorite character in Keira‘s bedtime stories. Finally, the speaker mentioned Doudou N‘Diaye Rose. He was Keira‘s favorite drummer. He was from Senegal. She began to realise just how much her West African roots influenced her American life.
Finally, the storyteller came up. He told a story that explained how the chameleon, a small lizard(蜥蜴), changed its colors. Then he introduced the Spider and Tortoise. It was known that they appeared to be generous but in fact they wanted to keep everything for themselves. Some of the stories made these characters seem poor as they fought for every last piece. However, they — 5 —

The charity hopes to tell young people why they need a full night's sleep and how to develop good sleeping habits. Kate Pearce, a teacher of guidance, said, “We’ve studied it for more than three years. Students often find it very difficult to get up in the morning and pay attention to their study. Jeans have become one piece of clothing worn by the most people in the world.
Everybody wears them, from the farmer to the lawyer and from models to housewives.
But why have jeans become so popular? You’ll get many answers. For some people
they look cool, for others jeans are just comfortable.
Jeans were first stronger trousers made for farm workers in the states of the
American west. In the eastern part of the US jeans were hardly worn at all. They were connected with farm people and the workers. So the rich wouldn’t like to wear them.
It was James Dean and Marlon Brando that made them popular in movies and everyone 1960s. So these new trousers were not allowed in American schools and sometimes in theatres and cinemas. As time went on,jeans became more acceptable. American people in Europe and Japan often wore them when they were not on duty to show that they were Americans. The trousers showed the world a happier way of life, something that people needed, especially after what they had gone through in World War II.
Jeans had other advantages as well. They didn’t need to be washed as often as other trousers and women didn’t need to iron them. This became more important as more and more women started working and had less time for housework.
Today jeans are an important part of our lives. They are always washed a few times before they are sold to give them a faded look.
