After a terrible electrical accident, which caused him to become both blind and deaf, the whole world became completely dark and quiet for Robert Edwards for almost ten years. The loss of sight and hearing threw him into such sorrow that he tried a few times to put an end to his life. His family, especially his wife, did their best to tend and comfort him and finally he regained the will to live.

One hot summer afternoon, he was taking a walk with a stick near his house when a thunderstorm started all at once. He stood under a large tree to avoid getting wet, but he was struck by the lightning. Witnesses thought he was dead but he woke up some 20 minutes later lying face down in muddy water at the base of the tree. He was trembling badly, but when he opened his eyes, he could hardly believe what he saw: a plough and a wall. When Mrs. Edwards came running up to him, shouting to their neighbors to call for help, he could see her and hear her voice for the first time in nearly ten years.

The news of Robert regaining his sight and hearing quickly spread, and many doctors came to examine him. Most of them said that he regained his sight and hearing from the shock he got from the lightning. However, none of them could give a convincing answer as to why this should have happened. The only reasonable explanation given by one doctor was that, since Robert lost his sight and hearing as a result of a sudden shock, perhaps, the only way for him to regain them was by another sudden shock.

Does stress cause gray hair? Many people believe that tension and stress can cause your hair to lose its color. In fact,it is an_old_wives’_tale that being upset all the time can result in premature graying. Here is a closer look at this situation and why some believe that this old wives’ tale could be true.

As one ages, the hairs on the head also age.In fact, just about everything on the human body begins to show signs of wear and tear after a while. The joints wear and become stiff and skin wears and becomes wrinkled.Hairs on the head grow and eventually die. They are replaced, but in the process something else happens.

When new hairs are replaced, the color or pigment (色素) is also added to them. However,as one ages, this pigment becomes less and less available. At first, hairs will have a limited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be white. Many things are known to cause graying, and genetics is a very powerful factor. If one of your parents turns gray

at an early age, there is a good chance that you will too. Some people begin the graying process in high school, while others may be over the age of forty.

Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body.It is a known fact that stressful times can cause one to suffer hair loss.It would make sense that if it can cause these problems, perhaps it also may contribute to graying. However, there is no sound evidence to support this.

On the other hand, many medical professionals believe that there may be a link between graying and a constant state of anxiety or tension.Does stress cause gray hair? There is no scientific evidence to support the theory, but it is best to avoid stressful situations.

1.The underlined phrase in the first paragraph most probably means________.

A.clever remarks

C.exciting remarks B.silly remarks D.disappointed remarks

画线短语前面提到“Many people believe that tension and stress can cause your hair to lose its color”,即许多人相信紧张和压力导致头发褪色变白。短文接着谈到“In fact,it is...”,这是推测画线词意思的关键。因此an old wives’ tale意为“无稽之谈”。

答案 B

2.The second paragraph mainly tells us________.

A.every part of body is replaced with age

B.hairs will grow weak but not die

C.skin becomes wrinkled with age

D.every part of body ages with age

3.What might play the most important role in the graying process?

A.Genetics and the amount of sleeping time.

B.The amount of food people eat and living environment.

C.The amount of pigment and genetics.

D.Genetics and the amount of water people drink

本文第三段提到“At first, hairs will have a limited amount of pigment and they will appear to be grayish in color. In time, they will lose all of their pigment and will be white. Many things are known to cause graying, and genetics is a very powerful factor.”

4.According to the passage, continuous pressure may result in________.

A.a person’s fatness

C.a person’s weight loss B.a person’s fitness D.a person’s hair loss

本文倒数第二段提到“Constant worry and tension can have many harmful effects on the human body.It is a known fact that stressful times can cause one to suffer hair loss”。

5.From the passage we can infer that________.

A.stress causing gray hair is still in question

B.gray hair has nothing to do with tension

C.stressful situations can be of benefit

D.sound evidence has been found

本文倒数第二段最后提到“However, there is no sound evidence to support this.”最后一段也提到“There is no scientific evidence to support the theory...”。

答案 A。

For my grandmother’s 70th birthday,my family and I visited South Korea. While there,I was attentive to Korean high schools and students.

I was surprised by how different Korea’s public high schools are from

America’s.Korean high schools can be allgirls, allboys or coed (男女同校的) unlike our standard coed high schools. There are three grades:“go 1(10th)”,“go 2(11th)” and “go 3(12th)”.“Go” is the first syllable of the word “godeunghakkyo”,which, simply translated,is “high school”.

In America, unless you want to go to a private school, you don’t have to take an

entrance exam.In Korea, however, students must take a test to get in because of the many choices of schools.

Another difference I couldn’t help but notice was the students’ appearance. With very few exceptions, all wear uniforms.A name tag (标牌) with the student’s name, grade and homeroom number must also be worn.Girl’s skirts can’t be above the upper part of the knee, and it is forbidden to dye(染) your hair or wear accessories (装饰品) except small earrings. There are strict regulations for appearance to achieve neatness, and it seems the only freedom students have is with their choices of hair style, socks and shoes. The final difference was the setup of the classes. There may be 40 students in a classroom, but the number can be less or even more, depending on the population of the town or city.Although there are many students per classroom, they are very close, which I think is a result of not changing classrooms for different subjects. There are no levels in the subjects and the teachers are the ones who switch classrooms. They just have tenminute breaks between subjects. In each class, students are ranked by their grades. This causes strict competition, and Korean students do a lot of

studying. To help them, all schools have extra study classes after school. One other fact that helped me appreciate living in America is that Koreans have school on Saturdays.Although it’s only a half day,I think I speak for most Americans when I say we could never imagine ourselves in school on a Saturday.

Korea’s public high schools are clearly different from America’s.I had imagined them to be just like our schools, but now I have a clear picture of how different they are.

1.How many main differences are mentioned between Korea’s public high school and America’s?

A.3.

C.5. B.4. D.6.

2.It seems that the writer________.

A.is familiar with the education system of high schools in Korea

B.is fond of Korean students’ appearance

NEWS BRIEF

● "New labels to show calories

The US government ruled that all food establishments(场所) should put the calorie information of their foods on their menus. Within a year chain restaurants, like fast food KFC, will have to say clearly on their menus how many calories their fried chicken wings, fries, and other items contain. Amusement parks, movie theaters and

supermarkets will also have to follow the rules. The move is designed to fight against the problem of obesity(肥胖) in the US.

● Antibiotics leading to world problem

The entire world is facing this problem; antibiotic resistance. And the resistance will lead to the deaths of 10 million people across the world by 2025, predicted a new report released by the UK government. Antibiotics are used to destroy or slow the growth of harmful bacteria in our bodies. But overuse and misuse of them can encourage bacteria to develop new ways of overcoming antibiotics, which makes it increasingly difficult for humans to fight diseases.

●___________________________________

Australia is the world's most expensive destination for international students, according to a study done by Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC). They have to spend an average of $ 42,000 ( about 258 ,000 yuan) a year to study at Australian universities. Singapore is not far behind, with an average yearly cost of $ 39,229, followed by the US at $ 36,564 and the UK at 35,045. However, Australia's education quality only ranks joint fourth with Canada, well below the US, the UK, and Germany. In addition, international students studying in Germany only have to pay about one-sixth the cost of studying in Australia.

● New Games sports may be added

The International Olympic Committee has canceled the 28-sportcap for future summer Olympics But each summer Games will still only be allowed 10, 500 athletes

and 310 events. Countries that could host the games will discuss plans with the committee during a new invitation stage before bidding. With more and more cars on the road, traffic jams are inevitable.Traffic jams can

lead to increased accidents as there are more cars, with more people trying to get to their destination, all the while getting worse.Although it's impossible to avoid traffic jams altogether, there are some tips you can follow to reduce the amount of time on the road.

Check for traffic jams before you leave. You can listen to the radio for traffic news,or check on the Internet to get uptominute information on traffic. If the route you want to take is heavy with traffic, you can choose another.

Look for a different route permanently. Most traffic jams occur on busy roads.Using country roads could see you avoiding a lot of traffic.Although the distance you may have to travel is further,it can work out quicker.

Set your car radio to receive traffic bulletins. Many new car stereo systems(汽车音响系统)are equipped with a radio system by which you can hear the traffic

channel. This way you can get the latest traffic information and change your journey if necessary.

________.Most traffic jams usually occur during rush hour,so try to avoid this time period if possible. Some jobs offer flexible working hours so that you can travel to work outside of rush hour. Some jobs even allow you to work from home so as to avoid commuting altogether.Ask your manager to see what you can do if traffic is a problem for you.

Use public transport alternatives where available. The easiest way to avoid traffic jams is to take buses or the underground instead of driving your own car.Not only will you avoid traffic jams but you will most likely be saving money as the cost of motoring rises.

(2013·全国Ⅱ,A)

Doctors are known to be terrible pilots. They don't listen because they already know it all. I was lucky: I became a pilot in 1970, almost ten years before I graduated from medical school. I didn't realize then, but becoming a pilot makes me a better surgeon. I loved flying. As I flew bigger, faster planes, and in worse weather, I learned about crew resource management (机组资源管理), or CRM, a new idea to make flying safer. It means that crew members should listen and speak up for a good result, regardless of positions.

I first read about CRM in 1980. Not long after that, an attending doctor and I were flying in bad weather. The controller had us turn too late to get our landing ready. The attending doctor was flying; I was safety pilot. He was so busy because of the bad turn, he had forgotten to put the landing gear (起落架) down. He was a better pilot—and my boss—so it felt unusual to speak up. But I had to: Our lives were in danger. I put aside my uneasiness and said, “We need to put the landing gear down now!” That was my first real lesson in the power of CRM, and I've used it in the operating room ever since.

CRM requires that the pilot/surgeon encourage others to speak up. It further requires that when opinions are from the opposite, the doctor doesn't overreact, which might prevent fellow doctors from voicing opinions again. So when I'm in the operating room, I ask for ideas and help from others. Sometimes they're not willing to speak up. But I hope that if I continue to encourage them, someday someone will keep me from“landing_gear_up”.

1.What dose the author say about doctors in general?

A.They like flying by themselves.

B.They are unwilling to take advice.

- 2 -

C.They pretend to be good pilots.

D.They are quick learners of CRM.

2.The author deepened his understanding of the power of CRM when ________.

A.he saved the plane by speaking up

B.he was in charge of a flying task

C.his boss landed the plane too late

D.his boss operated on a patient

3.In the last paragraph “landing gear up” probably means ________.

A.following flying requirements

B.overreacting to different opinions

C.listening to what fellow doctors say

D.making a mistake that may cost lives

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.CRM: A New Way to Make Flying Safe.

B.Flying Makes Me a Better Doctor.

C.The Making of a Good Pilot.

D.A PilotTurned Doctor.

If a diver surfaces too quickly, he may suffer the bends. Nitrogen(氮) dissolved (溶解)in his blood is suddenly liberated by the reduction of pressure. The consequence, if the bubbles (气泡)accumulate in a joint, is sharp pain and a bent body—thus the name. If the bubbles form in his lungs or his brain, the consequence can be death. Other airbreathing animals also suffer this decompression(减压)sickness if they surface too fast: whales, for example. And so, long ago, did ichthy osaurs (鱿). That these ancient sea animals got the bends can be seen from their bones. If bubbles of nitrogen form inside the bone they can cut off its blood supply. This kills the cells in the bone, and consequently weakens it, sometimes to the point of collapse. Fossil(化石)bones that have caved in on themselves are thus a sign that the animal once had the bends.

Bruce Rothschild of the University of Kansas knew all this when he began a study of ichthyosaur bones to find out how widespread the problem was in the past. What he particularly wanted to investigate was how ichthyosaurs adapted to the problem of decompression over the 150 million years. To this end, he and his colleagues traveled the world's naturalhistory museums, looking at hundreds of ichthyosaurs from the Triassic period and from the later Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.

When he started, he assumed that signs of the bends would be rarer in younger fossils, reflecting their gradual evolution of measures to deal with decompression. Instead, he was astonished to discover the opposite. More than 15% of Jurassic and Cretaceous ichthyosayurs had suffered the bends before they died, but not a single Triassic specimen(标本)showed evidence of that sort of injury.

If ichthyosaurs did evolve an antidecompression means, they clearly did so quickly—and, most strangely, they lost it afterwards. But that is not what Dr Rothschild thinks happened. He suspects it was evolution in other animals that caused the change.

Whales that suffer the bends often do so because they have surfaced to escape a predator

- 4 -

(捕食动物)such as a large shark. One of the features of Jurassic oceans was an abundance of large sharks and crocodiles, both of which were fond of ichthyosaur lunches. Triassic oceans, by contrast, were mercifully sharkand crocodilefree. In the Triassic, then, ichthyosaurs were top of the food chain. In the Jurassic and Cretaceous, they were prey(猎物)as well as predator—and often had to make a speedy exit as a result.

5.Which of the following is a typical symptom of the bends?

A.A twisted body.

B.A gradual decrease in blood supply.

C.A sudden release of nitrogen in blood.

D.A drop in blood pressure.

根据第一段第二句话“The consequence, if the bubbles accumulate in a joint, is sharp pain and a bent body—thus the name”当血液中的氮气释放,聚集在关节处,结果就是剧烈的疼痛和身体的弯曲——这就是bends这个名字的由来。

6.The purpose of Rothschild's study is to see ________.

A.how often ichthyosaurs caught the bends

B.how ichthyosaurs adapted to decompression

C.why ichthyosaurs bent their bodies

D.when ichthyosaurs broke their bones

根据第三段第二句话“What he particularly wanted to investigate was how ichthyosaurs adapted to the problem of decompression over the 150 million years.”

7.Rothschild's finding stated in Paragraph 4 ________.

A.confirmed his assumption

B.speeded up his research process

C.disagreed with his assumption

D.changed his research objectives

四、One possible version: How have you been? You must be enjoying your life back at home. All of my classmates miss you very much and will never forget the days we spent together.

In the last term, we all benefited a lot from your lessons. With your help, our oral English was improved so greatly that we became more confident to express ourselves. Besides, it was your teaching methods to memorize English words that made a big difference in our English study. Also, we learned so much about western culture and tradition, which enlarged our knowledge.

So I would like to thank you for teaching us English so well on behalf of my class. We sincerely hope you will live and work happily.

Text 1

M: Gosh, I’m hungry. What’s for supper? I hope you’ve made plenty of chips.

W: I haven’t, actually. I’ve just made a large salad, but there’s a loaf of fresh bread if you want it.

Text 2

W: What did you think of the film, Jim?

M: Oh, Jane, there was too much fighting in the film for me, but Tom liked it very much.

Text 3

M: Yikes, we’d better be careful out in the sun and put some sun cream on.

W: Yeah. But we’re going to get some light showers this evening. Hopefully that will cool things down.

M: I wouldn’t mind some rain. It would provide relief from this heat.

Text 4

W: Where are you going to plant the tree? By the front door?

M: No, that would be silly. It’ll grow too big. I’m going to put it at the back of the garage. W: I thought it would be better right at the end of the garden.

M: OK.

Text 5

M: The bank called me today. They wanted to know if I spent $ 3,000 in a furniture shop this morning. Of course, I didn’t.

W: Someone must have made a copy of your credit card. You’ll have to cancel it at once and get a new one.

M: Yes. And hopefully the bank will cover the damage.

Text 6

M: What’s up?

W: The TV control isn’t working.

M: But the TV is on.

W: I know. I switched it on by hand but I can’t change channels.

M: When was the last time you used it?

W: Last night. But Mark changed the batteries this morning because they were running down. M: Did he check the control afterwards?

W: I don’t know.

M: Has it been dropped? You know these things are pretty sensitive.

W: Well, all I did was pick it up off the table.

M: OK. Let’s have a look inside.

Text 7

M: Have you always worked as a manager?

W: Well, since 2000.

M: And why don’t you work for that company?

W: That company is not large at all. I need some breathing space.

M: And when would you be free to start work?

W: Any time you like.

M: And what sort of pay would you expect to be earning for a year in this job?

W: Oh! 12,000 pounds or so.

M: Well, that should do for the moment. The form for you will be in the post this afternoon. We’ll look forward to hearing from you soon.

W: Thank you. Goodbye.

Text 8

W: Here comes The Sunday newspaper again.

M: Can I have the sports section?

W: Sure, here you are.

M: Let me check if there’s anything exciting next week.

W: You mean football matches?

M: Yes. Here it is! There will be a great football match on Monday at the City Stadium.

W: So you’ll go and watch it.

M: Of course. But do you think they will cancel the football match if it rains on Monday? W: I think they will.

M: If they do cancel it, will they have it on Wednesday?

W: I really can’t tell.

M: I want to make sure about it because I will be out of town on Wednesday. I really can’t miss the game.

W: Why don’t you check the weather on the Internet?

M: Good idea. I’ll do it right now.

Text 9

W: Excuse me, are you going to buy that book?

M: Well, I need it for a class but it’s awfully expensive.

W: Oh, we must be in the same class. Introduction to British Literature?

M: Yes, that’s the one. Were you there yesterday for the first class?

W: I sure was. Professor Robert really seems to know his subject.

M: Yes, I took his Shakespeare course last term and it was very good. He likes listening to his students.

W: That’s a relief. I’m a biology major and I’m a little uncertain about taking an English course. M: I’m an English major. But now I’m in trouble because I’m not sure I can afford this book. W: Hey, I’ve got an idea, Why don’t we share the cost? It’s not that much for both of us.

M: Sounds great. Do you live at school?

W: Yeah, I live on the l0th floor of Butler Hall.

M: Perfect. We live in the same hall, but I live on the 3rd floor. We should have no trouble sharing the book. I can bring it up to you right after I finish the assignment.

W: It’s a deal.

Text 10

M: Animals, especially cats and dogs, are often kept as pets and they can be very good friends of humans. Here are two stories about a cat and a dog.

At Jesus College, Cambridge University, concerns are growing for the safety of a pet cat which has gone missing. Students and teachers of the college have not seen college cat Benson for three weeks. The 600 students of the college have been asked to search their rooms and keep an eye open for him. The grey and white cat is officially a member of the college, an honor which includes dining rights. The master asks anyone who might see the cat to contact the college.

In Lexington, Kentucky, a dog, named Jo Jo, was hit by a car. His master Steve Ford searched for him but Jo Jo was nowhere to be found. Ford called the local animal hospital to tell them that Jo Jo had been injured and that he was going to bring him in if he could find him. That’s when he found out Jo Jo was already there. “He just checked himself in, I guess,” Ford said. After the accident, Jo Jo obviously ran about a mile from Ford’s home to the animal hospital. He suffered some cuts but no broken bones.
