How Albert Einstein won great success in his life B Last week I ran into an old friend, Helen, and it was lovely to catch up on all the things that we had experienced since since then and to recall our school and college days. We had taken quite different paths and this was one of the reasons why we hadn’t stayed in touch with each other, the main one being that she had moved to the other side of the world. While I had chosen to stay in my hometown, she had decided to win a medical scholarship to a medical college in the UAE, when she later got a dental(牙科的) scholarship and went to one of the best dental schools. After graduation, she went on a successful dental practice, and she had two dentists helping her. We then began to discuss our old teachers, who were strict but fair compared with many of today’s teachers. In our school days bodily punishment was only just going out of fashion and new laws were coming into effect, though they were too late to help us. Thankfully we both had been good students generally and rarely had to feel the pain caused by the ruler. But teachers in modern schools have to be a lot braver than in our time because many children are advised to be respected and punishment of children is forbidden, and as a result, you will find teachers have to face rudeness, teasing and even attack. Heavy work, low salaries, little opportunity for promotion, and the rising cost of living, it is no wonder that the number of people choosing a career in teaching has become smaller in recent years. We both agree that education should be valued and our future will depend on the children.

27. Paragraph 4 mainly talks about________? A. the teachers’ salaries

B. the reasons why people choose to be teachers now C. the teachers’ living conditions

D. the main problems that teachers are facing now 28.What can we learn from the passage?

We have all had the experience of having really good friends in our lives and one day we wake up and the friends have begun to become jealous of us. Everyone gets jealous from time to time and that is normal. Having a healthy jealousy(妒忌) of others can serve to motivate us in our attempts and also in learning about ourselves, but we need to be willing to admit having the feeling. Unfortunately, there are individuals who take this feeling of jealousy to extremes.

There is an old story about crabs(螃蟹) in a barrel. When one crab tries to crawl out, another crab pulls it back down and tries to climb over it to get to the top and another pulls that one back down and so on and so on. No one of those crabs has ever made it to the top. What is the moral(寓意) of this story? Some of our friends or family members are like crabs in a barrel. Not only will they try to pull us down and try to prevent us from reaching the top, but they themselves are not able to reach the top.

You may not be able to change how someone feels about himself, but you can adjust how you contribute to how someone feels about himself and his achievements. Remember, the only person who will have an interest in your dreams and your achievements is you. Others may be happy for you, but don’t expect everyone to fall head over heels in love with your dreams, goals and desires especially if you are succeeding at a much faster rate than they are. If you hold that picture in your mind, then you will be able to look past any jealousy.

33. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?

A.Jealousy isn’t always harmful. B. Jealousy does people no good.

C. Jealousy doesn’t exist in real friendships D. It’s improper for us to have jealousy.

34. The story about crabs mentioned in the second paragraph is to show______.

A. the jealousy in the animal world B. the harm of unhealthy jealousy

C. an interesting phenomenon about crabs

D. the difference between crabs and humans 35. The last paragraph mainly tells us_______. A. how to change others’ feelings【Albert,Einstein,was,born,in,Germany,in,1879.He,was,a,quiet,child,who,spent,much,of,his,time,alone.】

B. how to get rid of jealousy of friends C. how people react to their friends’ success D. how to deal with jealousy in relationships

Albert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. He was a quiet child who spent much of his time alone. He was slow to talk and had difficulty learning to read. When Albert was five years old, his father gave him a compass. The child was filled with wonder when he discovered that the compass needle always pointed in the same direction — to the north. He asked his father and his uncle what caused the needle to move.

Albert did not like school. The German schools of that time were not pleasant. Students could not ask questions. Albert said he felt as if he were in prison.

In 1905, Albert Einstein published some important papers in a German scientific magazine. They included one of the most important scientific documents in history. It explained what came to be called his “Special Theory of Relativity”. Ten years later, he expanded it to a “General Theory of Relativity”.

In 1921, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. It was given to him not for his theories of relativity, but for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.

Albert Einstein left Germany when Adolph Hitler came to power in 1933. He moved to the United States to continue his research. Einstein became a citizen of the United States in 1940.

Einstein was a famous man, but you would not have known that by looking at him. His white hair was long and wild. He wore old clothes. He showed an inner joy when he was playing his violin or talking about his work. Students and friends said he had a way of explaining difficult ideas using images that were easy to understand.

Einstein spent the last twenty-five years of his life working on what he called a “unified field theory”. He hoped to find a common mathematical statement that could tie together all the different parts of physics. He did not succeed.

Albert Einstein died in 1955 at the age of seventy-six.

21. What can we learn about Albert Einstein in his childhood according to the passage?

A. He was quite clever and smart. B. He was curious about new things.

C. He hated talking with others. D. He was good at inventing things.

22. What’s the right order of the following events about Albert Einstein?

a. He won the Nobel Prize in Physics.

b. He became a citizen of the United States.

c. He left Germany for the United States.

d. He put forward his “General Theory of Relativity”.

e. He worked on a “unified field theory”.

A. d, e, a, c, b B. a, b, d, e, c C. d, c, b, a, e D. d, a, c, b, e

Top lists are lecturing people on everything from “100 books to read”. Aren't you just tired of being told what to do with your time?

Now you have a list to end all lists!

Take a look at the following two examples from the list of “101 things not to do”:

Swim with Dolphins (海豚)? Swimming with dolphins is one of the world’s most profitable tourist activities. However, every dolphin will welcome having their busy, tiring day interrupted by tourists screaming pushing around them in the water. Worse yet, when dolphins get too near to the boats loaded tourists, they could get caught up in ropes and killed by propellers (螺旋桨).

Here’s a little secret. Dolphins look like smiling at you, but actually they’re just opening mouths.

Go to See the Mona Lisa?

There must be something about the mysterious (神秘的) smile. The 6 million people who visit the lady in the Louvre every year can’t all be wrong after all. But they can be quite annoying, standing in front of you, holding up their cameras to prevent you from seeing anything. In fact it is hard for you to see the painting clearly because you have to stay away from it for security reasons. After queuing for hours, many tourists can remain in front of the painting only for 15 seconds most.

If the mysterious lady in the picture knew her fate, she wouldn’t just be smiling, she laughing.

So, still long to see the Mona Lisa? If you want to find out more about the list, read 101 Things NOT to Do Before You Die. Visit and buy the book at a 20% discount.

24. According to the passage, swimming with dolphins __________.

A. is the world’s most popular tourist activity

B. gives fun to both tourists and dolphins

C. will make tourists busy and tired D. can cause danger to dolphins

25. What does the author think about going to see the Mona Lisa?

A. It is wrong to go and see the mysterious smile.

B. It is not as satisfying as expected.

C. Fifteen seconds in front of the painting is enough.

D. Queuing for hours is worthwhile.

26. The list of “101 things not to do” is made most probably because its author __________-.

A. thinks it boring to do the things suggested by other lists B. believes other lists are not humorous enough

C. intends to persuade people to read more lists

D. wants to provide a list different from other lists

27. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To advertise a book. B. To introduce a website.

C. To comment on popular lists. D. To recommend tourist activities

C

There are three branches of medicine. One is called “doctor medicine,” or “scientific medicine.” Scientific doctors try to observe sicknesses, look for logical patterns, and then find out how the human body works. From there they figure out what treatments may work. This kind of medicine is believed to date from the 4th century BC. Although nowadays it is successful, in the ancient world this approach probably did not cure many patients.

A second kind of medicine is called “natural cures,” or “folk medicine,” in which less educated people try to cure sicknesses with various herbs. These folk healers also

use observation and logic, but they are not so aware of it. They try things until they find something that seems to work, and then they keep doing that. Folk medicine flourished (繁荣) long before the development of scientific medicine and was more successful in ancient times than doctor medicine.

The third kind is called “health spas,” or “faith healing.” Sometimes this may be as simple as touching the holy (神圣的) man and being immediately healed. Other times, a magician may make you a magic charm, or say a spell (咒语), to cure you. Some religious groups organize special healing shrines (圣坛) for the sick. In these places people rest, get plenty of sleep, eat healthy food, drink water instead of wine, and exercise in various ways. They also talk to the priests and pray to the gods. If you are feeling depressed or you have been working too hard, going to these places may be just the right thing to make you feel better.

28. Doctor medicine __________.

A. has a longer history than folk medicine

B. has been practiced for around 2, 400 years

C. bases its treatments on observation and imagination D. was very successful in curing sicknesses in ancient times

29. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT used in health spas?

A. Magic power.

C. Religious faith. B. Various herbs. D. A healthy life style.

30. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?

A. Folk healers choose different herbs to cure diseases without any sound basis.

B. People who practice folk medicine need lots of formal education on herbs.

C. The success of folk medicine led to the development of doctor medicine.

D. Natural cures worked better than scientific medicine in ancient times.

31. The author's purpose in this passage is to __________.

A. describe different types of medicine

B. argue for the importance of medicine in health care

C. show the important role religion plays in medical treatments

D. compare the educational background of three different types of patients

D

As a little girl, one of my favorite family traditions was held on the first day of May. Along with my sister, my mother and I would make simple flower baskets by making paper into cones (圆锥形). Then, we filled the bottom of the cone with small candies before putting some flowers into it. With our May Day baskets in hand, my sister and I became anonymous gift-givers. After hanging a basket on the front door of a neighbor or friend, we rang the doorbell and ran away. The goal was to remain secret givers.

Historically, the first of May, often referred to as “May Day,” has been recognized as a celebration of spring, of life and growth. Parades and dances are ways that the day has been — and continues to be — celebrated in many parts of the world. Although formal May Day celebrations may be less common now, it is always worth celebrating. Here are some simple ways to celebrate May Day in our homes and those we love.

Was Einstein a Space Alien?

1 Albert Einstein was exhausted. For the third night in a row, his baby son Hans, crying, kept the household awake until dawn. When Albert finally dozed off ... it was time to get up and go to work. He couldn't skip a day. He needed the job to support his young family.

2 Walking briskly to the Patent Office, where he was a "Technical Expert, Third Class," Albert worried about his mother. She was getting older and frail, and she didn't approve of his marriage to Mileva. Relations were strained. Albert glanced at a passing shop window. His hair was a mess; he had forgotten to comb it again.

3 Work. Family. Making ends meet. Albert felt all the pressure and responsibility of any young husband and father. To relax, he revolutionized physics.

4 In 1905, at the age of 26 and four years before he was able to get a job as a professor of physics, Einstein published five of the most important papers in the history of science--all written in his "spare time." He proved that atoms and molecules existed. Before 1905, scientists weren't sure about that. He argued that light came in little bits (later called "photons") and thus laid the foundation for quantum mechanics. He described his theory of special relativity: space and time were threads in a common fabric, he proposed, which could be bent, stretched and twisted.

5 Oh, and by the way, E=mc2.

对了,顺便提一下,E = mc2。

6 Before Einstein, the last scientist who had such a creative outburst was Sir Isaac Newton. It happened in 1666 when Newton secluded himself at his mother's farm to avoid an outbreak of plague at Cambridge. With nothing better to do, he developed his Theory of Universal Gravitation.

7 For centuries historians called 1666 Newton's “miracle year”. Now those words have a different meaning: Einstein and 1905. The United Nations has declared 2005 "The World Year of Physics" to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Einstein's “miracle year.”

8 Modern pop culture paints Einstein as a bushy-haired superthinker. His ideas, we're told, were improbably far ahead of other scientists. He must have come from some other planet--maybe the same one Newton grew up on.

9 "Einstein was no space alien," laughs Harvard University physicist and science historian Peter Galison. "He was a man of his time." All of his 1905 papers unraveled problems being worked on, with mixed success, by other scientists. "If Einstein hadn't been born, [those papers] would have been written in some form, eventually, by others," Galison believes.

“爱因斯坦决不是外星人,”哈佛大学物理学家、科学史家彼得加里森笑着说。“他是他那个时代的人。”他所有发表于1905年的论文解决了当时其他科学家正多多少少在解决的问题,“如果没有爱因斯坦,其他科学家最终也会以某种形式撰写出这些论文来的”加里森相信。

10 What's remarkable about 1905 is that a single person authored all five papers, plus the original, irreverent way Einstein came to his conclusions.

11 For example: the photoelectric effect. This was a puzzle in the early 1900s. When light hits a metal, like zinc, electrons fly off. This can happen only if light comes in little packets concentrated enough to knock an electron loose. A spread-out wave wouldn't do the photoelectric trick.

12 The solution seems simple--light is particulate. Indeed, this is the solution Einstein proposed in 1905 and won the Nobel Prize for in 1921. Other physicists like Max

Planck (working on a related problem: blackbody radiation), more senior and experienced than Einstein, were closing in on the answer, but Einstein got there first. Why?

It's a question of authority.

13 "In Einstein's day, if you tried to say that light was made of particles, you found yourself disagreeing with physicist James Clerk Maxwell. Nobody wanted to do that," says Galison. Maxwell's equations were enormously successful, unifying the physics of electricity, magnetism and optics. Maxwell had proved beyond any doubt that light was an electromagnetic wave. Maxwell was an Authority Figure.

“在爱因斯坦的时代,如果你试图说光由粒子组成,你就会发现自己与物理学家杰姆斯.克拉克.马克斯威尔持不同观点。没有人想那么做,”加里森说道。马克斯威尔的方程式把物理学中的电学、磁学和光学统一起来,获得了巨大的成功。麦克斯威尔毫无疑问地证明了光是电磁波。他可是权威人物。

14 Einstein didn't give a fig for authority. He didn't resist being told what to do, not so much, but he hated being told what was true. Even as a child he was constantly doubting and questioning. "Your mere presence here undermines the class's respect for me," spat his 7th grade teacher, Dr. Joseph Degenhart. (Degenhart also predicted that Einstein "would never get anywhere in life.") This character flaw was to be a key ingredient in Einstein's discoveries.

15 "In 1905," notes Galison, "Einstein had just received his Ph.D. He wasn't beholden to a thesis advisor or any other authority figure." His mind was free to roam accordingly.

“在1905年,”加里森着重指出,“爱因斯坦刚刚获得博士学位,他不感激于论文导师或任何其他权威人士。”因此,他的思想在自由漫游。

16 In retrospect, Maxwell was right. Light is a wave. But Einstein was right, too. Light is a particle. This bizarre duality baffles Physics 101 students today just as it baffled Einstein in 1905. How can light be both? Einstein had no idea.

17 That didn't slow him down. Disdaining caution, Einstein adopted the intuitive leap as a basic tool. "I believe in intuition and inspiration," he wrote in 1931. "At times I feel certain I am right while not knowing the reason."

18 Although Einstein's five papers were published in a single year, he had been thinking about physics, deeply, since childhood. "Science was dinner-table

conversation in the Einstein household," explains Galison. Albert's father Hermann and uncle Jakob ran a German company making such things as dynamos, arc lamps, light bulbs and telephones. This was high-tech at the turn of the century, "like a Silicon Valley company would be today," notes Galison. "Albert's interest in science and technology came naturally."

19 Einstein's parents sometimes took Albert to parties. No babysitter was required: Albert sat on the couch, totally absorbed, quietly doing math problems while others danced around him. Pencil and paper were Albert's GameBoy!

20 He had impressive powers of concentration. Einstein's sister, Maja, recalled "...even when there was a lot of noise, he could lie down on the sofa, pick up a pen and paper, precariously balance an inkwell on the backrest and engross himself in a problem so much that the background noise stimulated rather than disturbed him." .

21 Einstein was clearly intelligent, but not outlandishly more so than his peers. "I have no special talents," he claimed, "I am only passionately curious." And again: "The contrast between the popular assessment of my powers ... and the reality is simply grotesque." Einstein credited his discoveries to imagination and pesky questioning more so than orthodox intelligence.

22 Later in life, it should be remembered, he struggled mightily to produce a unified field theory, combining gravity with other forces of nature. He failed. Einstein's brainpower was not limitless.

23 Neither was Einstein's brain. It was removed without permission by Dr. Thomas Harvey in 1955 when Einstein died. He probably expected to find something extraordinary:Einstein's mother Pauline had famously worried that baby Einstein's head was lopsided. (Einstein's grandmother had a different concern: "Much too fat!") But Einstein's brain looked much like any other, gray, crinkly, and, if anything, a trifle smaller than average.
