A man who failed to return more than 700 children’s books to five different libraries in the county was put into prison. Yesterday he was set free after a book publisher agreed to post his bond (担保金) of $1,000. The

publisher said, “There’s a story here. This is a man who loves books. He just can’t let go of them. He hasn’t stolen a single book. So what’s the crime? We think that Mr. Brush has a story to tell. We plan to publish his story.”

When asked why he didn’t return the books, Mr. Brush said, “Well, how could I? They became friends to me. I was afraid to return them, because I knew that kids or dogs would get hold of these books and chew them up, throw them around, rip the pages, spill soda on them, get jam and jelly on them, and drown them in the toilet.”

He continued, “Books are people, too! They talk to you, they take care of you, and they enrich you with wisdom and humor and love. A book is my guest in my home. How could I kick it out? I repaired torn pages. I dusted them. I turned their pages so they could breathe and get some fresh air.

“Every week I reorganized them on their shelves so they could meet new friends. My books were HAPPY books. You could tell just by looking at them. Now they’re all back in the library, on the lower shelves, on the floors, at the mercy of all those runny-nosed kids. I can hear them calling me! I need to rescue them. Excuse me. I have to go now.”

21. Why was the man put into prison?

A. Because he refused to return the books that he had borrowed.

Try to Be Optimistic

I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places that I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism, but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times.”

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration(移民)officers, took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

C. often lost her way D. got on well with her stepfather

27. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?

A. She worked as a translator B. She paid telephone bills for her family

C. She helped her family with her English D. She attended a lot of job interviews

28. The author believes that ________.

A. her future will be free from troubles

B. it is difficult to learn to become patient

C. there are more good things than bad things

D. good things will happen if one keeps trying

C

Being able to multitask-doing(多重任务处理) several things at the same time is considered a welcome skill by most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should think again.

What we often see nowadays is that young people (电子产品) as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a large amount of time in fruitless efforts as they multitask.

Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family table.

Multitasking also has an effect on young people's performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinions of the effects of electronic devices on their performance of tasks, many young people gave a positive response. However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not quite as positive. Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later development of study skills. When travelers check the flight board at the airport and see some routes are being called off, it can fill them with a sense of worry. This can happen to any tourist at any time, due to airline strikes, volcanic eruptions(火山爆发) or a number of other disasters. While they will possibly be late to return home, there are several things travelers can do before departing or during an emergency(紧急情况) that can help the process go as smoothly as possible.

According to Australia News, travelers should be well-informed about the place they plan to visit ahead of time. If journeying to a place that’s known for flooding or hurricanes, a daily weather check by smart phone or laptop may help tourists not take the airport all together if an emergency should happen unexpectedly.

Some travelers may wish to stay away from the daily news while trying to relax on vacation, but it can be important to know the latest event in your new place. If trouble seems to be happening, travelers can make several plans before the crowds form.

Having help on speed dial is the key to quickly finding solutions in time of need. Organizing some kind of escape route for travelers and their loved ones will keep everyone knowing where they are during an emergency. Know where the highest ground is in areas likely to be flooding, or plan out a way to escape fire at the hotel

before disaster strikes.

One important way to prepare for emergency situations is ensuring travelers have at least two forms of payment. Local money is key when there is not an ATM or a credit card is useless. If guests in a foreign country have to offer payment for last minute transportation plans out of an area, having cash on hand may be the easiest way to find quick solutions to stay safe, according to Money Wise.

Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best is the ideal way to travel, just in case any natural disasters, illnesses or other tough disasters get in the way of a vacation. This will lessen as much stress as possible when dealing with emergencies that can happen on a trip.

32. What does the passage mainly talk about?

33. How many main particular preparations for emergency does the author suggest in the passage?

A. 3 B. 4 C. 5 D. 6

34. According to the passage, when traveling abroad, travelers ________________.

A. should check the daily weather at hometown by smart phone

B. had better not pay attention to the latest news in the new place

C. should turn off their telephones to enjoy themselves

D. need to prepare two or more forms of payment

35. The author writes this article in order to help those who ___________.

A. want to travel on holidays B. hope to settle abroad
