Good morning everyone.Today I’m happy to make a discussion about paper book and E-book with you. After our team seriously thinking and discussion,we agree that paper book is still the first selection when people decide to read. That means, though E-book has appeared for many years and its market is growing rapidly, paper book still occupy the first place. Therefore, our group choose to support paper book. When compared with E-book,paper book has its natural advantages.Firstly, traditional culture take paper book as its carrier, this also makes traditional reading has become a habit for most people. We all know that once a habit developed,it will be hard to change. It also illustrates that the status of paper book is still hard to shake by E-book and the soul and essence of paper book are also impossible to be replaced by E-book.Traditional reading helps us cultivate abstract thinking ability,by contrast,E-book looks like a kind of fast food culture which lacks of depth and aftertaste.Secondly,E-book isn’t really conductive to collection, collection of books is also a kind of collection of culture and a historical accumulation at the same time. So,one day in the future,if what we can see in museum is not ancient books but electronic readers, such as kindle,CD,removing storage devices, don’t tell me that you still have interesting to visit. So,as far as I’m concerned,a electronic reader is always a cold machine,it cann’t bring us warm feeling like paper book.To sum up,we choose to support paper book is a right choice.
We hold the view that in our study and life, we should use e-books more. As we know, e-books is format of books. It can be downloaded to a computer, personal computer, notebook or PDA, read through the screen. Compared with paper books, there is a big advantage. For example, firstly, the ebook can be obtained immediately, you can download e-book not out of the chair in a few minutes, instead of running to the bookstore. What’s more,e-books do not need to use trees to make paper as a page. The most convenient is that e-books are free to change the font, as a result, those who have defective eyesight would read very much easier. E-book represents a new science and technology, and will be more and more widely used. We believe that in the near future, e-books will replace paper books and become the main tool of our life and learning.
The other team has tried to make some good points, however, they forget to think about very important issues, that is which kind of book is more healthy. Nowadays, people are paying more and more attention to health issues. It is important to realize that e-books are easy to cause damage of our eyes and vision loss; And there are other health risks using e-books. When
we read e-books rather than paper-books for a long time, paper-books are more healthier to the readers.
Thanks to argue each other friends.however,I still deem that it will be bad for your eyesight to read paper-books for a long time, because the color of them and the design of text are not conducive to the protection of the eyes, on the contrary, e-books can design more scientific interfaces to protect his eyes.In addition, I also want to say another problem, I think paper books is too heavy, it's not convenient to carry and e-book is very small, I can even directly into my pocket, so I think e-books is better than paper books.
I hear what the opposition are saying but I do not agree.I will prove to you. Paper books can also easy to carry for reading anytime, when E book is out of electricity,it also cannot read.
When we are reading a real book, we can line a paragraph we are interested in conveniently, which helps us a lot in understanding and remembering the knowledge we need. But when reading e-books, we have to build a new file or use a notebook, it’s very inconvenient for us.Except that,if the book you want to read is a obscure advanced mathematic book,so do you still want to read it in E-book’s way?I firmly believe that most people will choose the paper version.
But the current paper-book also can not keep the copyright as most readers choose to buy the e-books rather than the original books. Because the e-books is much cheaper than the original books, and it also can provid the same knowledge as the original one. besides the e-books is convenient, you can take it along side ,and it is easy to Spread, you can share it with your friends easily just on line, Despite the two of you did not together which the paper-books can not.

E-books raises the popularity of piracy. Although people may need to pay for their downloading some e-books, but in more cases ,the user only need click his mouse.
Dear teacher and opposite debaber, thanks to the opposite debaters' statement, now , it is the time for me to do the summary address.
our debaters adhere to the view that "ebook cannot completely replace the paper book" from the beginning to the end, we listed the advantages of paper books in several espects ,such as depth reading, inheriting civilization, publishing copyright and so on.And we found that the ebooks have many shortcomings in reading habits limit, health keeping, electronic copyright chaos and so on. From the comparison, we can foresee that ebook cannot completely replace the paper books
Besides.in the way of traditional reading, the development of electronic reading is not only an opportunity but also a challenge. Traditional books is not only the accumulation of visible tangible forms , but also the constant accumulation of knowledge, it is a real symbol of cultural heritage and spiritual transfer tool. E-book is just a supplement to traditional reading. And its development is obviously limited. The fast food culture essence of electronic books leading to that it can only undertake transferring informational material; On the other hand, for some serious or highly academic professional readings, it is not
appropriate to be the reading tool. Nowadays,e-book is popular, someone may choose e-books to read in daily time, but it is just the spice of traditional paper books for most people and it will not replace the traditional paper books in the future for a long time.
That’s all,thank you.
E-books or paper books
What is the e-book? An e-book is a book in electronic format. It is downloaded to a computer, PC, Mac, laptop, PDA, tablet, smartphone or any other kind of reading device, and isread on the screen. It can have numbered pages, table of contents, pictures and graphics, exactly like a printed book.
E-books present many benefits and advantages. It is very simple and easy to purchase and download e-books through the Internet. After download you don't have to be connected to the Internet in order to read the e-book. You can stay offline. If you wish to have it printed, it is very easy-.Just click on the print button in the e-book, to print it with your home printer. E-books are delivered almost instantaneously. You can purchase, download and start reading them within minutes, without leaving your chair. You don't haveto go to a bookstore to buy them, neither wait for them for days, weeks and sometimes more to arrive in the mail. 2. No trees are required to manufacture paper for the pages of ebooks. When you need certain information, you can get it immediately, by downloading an e-book. Many e-books are sold nowadays with bonuses, which you usually do not get with a printed book. This adds value to your purchase.E-books take up less space. It is very simple and easy to purchase and download an e-book. People living in big modernized cities, in a remote village in a faraway country or on a smallisland, can equally access an e-book. It takes them the same amount of time to purchase and download an e-book, provided they have an Internet connection. It is possible to purchase an e-book 24 hours a day, every day of the year, from the comfort of your own house or office. You can purchase and downloadan e-book, even if you are on a vacation. All you need is a laptop, tablet. Smartphone, or a readingdevice, and wireless Internetconnection. The e-book has so much edvantage, the parper books have a hard time.Half a decade into the e-book revolution, though, the prognosis for traditional books issuddenly looking brighter. Hardcover books are displaying surprising resiliency. Thegrowth in e-book sales is slowing markedly. And purchases of e-readers are actuallyshrinking, as consumers opt instead for multipurpose tablets. It may be that e-books,rather than replacing printed books, will ultimately serve a role more like that of audiobooks—a complement to traditional reading, not a substitute. How attached are Americans to oldfashionedbooks? Just look at the resultsof a Pew Research Center surveyreleased last month. The report showedthat the percentage of adults who haveread an e-book rose modestly over thepast year, from 16% to 23%. But it also revealed that fully 89% of regular book readerssaid that they had read at least one printed book during the preceding 12 months.Only 30% reported reading even a single e-book in the past year.
Books are not going anywhere. Neither is publishing. Since Gutenberg made his epic contribution to the human race, publishinghas secured a place as one of the largest and most profitable industries in history. In that time, publishing has adapted to majortechnological changes, survived economic meltdowns, persisted through political censorship, and made it to the other side ofcatastrophic price wars.
It’s convenience that is drawing people to e-books and that is what will kill
printed books. Or, if notkill them, reduce them to the same minority hobbyist status that vinyl records now occupy.
Printed books will be strange relics from their parents’ generation. They mightappreciate their form but they will approach them as fundamentally less useful. And useful alwayswins in the end.The role of the printed book is still critical, if not for the publishing industry, but for the human race. Our permanent record, whetherthrough artistic expression in fiction, or through knowledge in non-fiction, is kept on printed books, not on electronic signals. Withoutthe printed book, there is no record of our time, place and civilization.
Topic: Will E-books Replace Traditional Books?
The idea that E-books will replace traditional books is mistaken. Such is a universal assumption that old things such as traditional books should be cleared out to make way for the new, say E-books, which are products of rapidly developing information technology. But actually, traditional books, which are seemingly faced with a big challenge from advanced digital devices, are absolutely indispensable for creating civilization and recording history. Even with the advent of E-books, traditional books are still a treasure house of learning. There is no denying that thanks to the internet and electronic equipment, information is not only accessible, but intuitive and fun as well. On most occasions, we either read newspapers and magazines on E-books to get latest financial statistics, economic policies and market information used to make business decisions, or be absorbed in fictions, killing time. When people sincerely attempt to learn something, they invariably refer to traditionally printed books, which systematically record the achievements of human civilization, including philosophy, theology, literature and science.
Traditional books spread knowledge while E-books provide information, and traditional books will never lose their value as knowledge will never be worthless.
The reading habits also save traditional books. A great many people, especially the young, always go into raptures at the mere mention of new technology, yet few of them are able to quickly adjust to the change. Most people including myself, who are fond of reading, enjoy smelling the books, feeling the paper and hearing the sound of turning the pages. Nothing can be compared with a bright afternoon when the pages are turned along with breeze blowing, when the pastoral life in the fiction reflects in mind as the light of the setting sun glints on the trees. All such peace can hardly be associated with electronic screens. Reading traditional books is not a sense of nostalgia, but a
symbol of gentle pace of living. It is really hard to change people’s deep-rooted habit of reading books.
As long as there still exists somebody who love knowledge and who enjoy quietness, traditional books will never be cleared out as wastes.
Host: Entertainment is going digital. Music 2)succumbed first and fastest. Movies are now
3)rippable and downloadable to watch anytime, anywhere. And, after much 4)resistance, the
5)stubborn paper book is finally beginning to give itself over to the digital revolution. Last year 5% of the books bought in the US and UK were digital ones, a combination of audio books and e-books. Now that’s obviously small, but it is growing. Now libraries are beginning to offer so-called e-lending, something which started in the US and has made its way across the Atlantic. Now around a quarter of British libraries offer digital book 6)loans.
Fiona Marriott (Luton Library): We’ve noticed that, with e-books, we’re getting a new kind of customer in: people who felt that they were too busy to use the library before, or, for example, people who commuted into London every day who were too busy to come in in the evening or too tired, and I have at least two blind customers who are downloading their own audio books now. And they say that’s given them freedom, so that they can actually make their own choice without having to come to the library with a guide.
Host: Overdrive is the digital book 8)distributor used by 13,000 libraries worldwide. You can log on to your library through a web browser or using the 9)Smartphone 10)App, and then browse an on-line collection of books. When you see something you like, just click to download it. E-lending means your library is open 11)24/7. No money is spent on staff to issue books or return them to shelves, there are no damaged or lost copies, and there are no late returns.
But surely there’s a bit of a logic problem with libraries loaning e-books. After all, if you want an e-book, you don’t physically have to go anywhere to get it. And you’re also not limited by how much stock there is. There’s always an 12)infinite number of copies of any text that you want to download. And that sounds much more convenient than having to pop down to your local library only to find that the one copy of the book they have is already out.
The first point doesn’t help the argument of those hoping to keep libraries open in this time of government spending cuts. If libraries did all their lending over the web, well, you wouldn’t need a physical library at all. And the second point about limitless copies for loan could mean that no one would ever need to actually buy a book at all. And that’s, understandably, worrying the book publishers.
Richard Mollet (Publisher’s Association UK): This relationship between publishing and libraries is historic, over a hundred years old, and we want it to continue into the e-book future. But we have to ensure that we 13)replicate, as closely as we can, the success of the physical lending model, which is that there’s one book, there’s one user, there’s one time, and in that way you ensure that the lending model doesn’t start to impact upon the retail model.
Host: Overdrive attempts to 14)allay those concerns. A local library chooses how many digital copies to purchase and that limits the number of users who can borrow the e-book at one time. When the loan period is up, the book will 15)expire automatically and return itself to the e-library for other 16)patrons to enjoy.
Some libraries use this system: “public library on line”. Here, all reading is done through a web browser; no book is downloaded. You don’t need to worry about the availability of a title either. All books can be accessed by many users at one time. The downside is, if your internet connection disappears, so does your book. Also, reading books on a web browser isn’t easy on the eyes, and most e-readers don’t come with a browser. This is essentially an attempt to tempt the reader into buying the physical book.
But the Publishing Association goes one step further still, suggesting that library customers should have to physically visit the library to download an e-book.
Richard: There need be no difference between doing that in the physical world, where you walk out with a physical book under your arm, or in the digital world where you walk out with an e-reader under your arm, which has a book you just downloaded. So, to my mind, if we can at least get that right, get that duplication right, that’s the first step.
Host: But even then, not all are convinced. At the start of the year, one of the biggest publishers in the world, McMillan Publishing US, declared it had no interest in being on libraries’
17)virtual shelves.
Some libraries are sticking to physical books but with a digital twist. Members of the New York Public Library can reserve a book through its website or, alternatively, click through to buy it from an on-line retailer, and the library gets a cut. Of course this doesn’t help the smaller libraries to remain open in times of huge budget cuts. And if more libraries do end up closing, this could be the way we borrow physical books in the future.
