2. A brief introduction of the author and background.

2.1 A brief introduction of the author

Charlotte Bronte(1816-1854) was born on April 21 1816, third of the six children of Patrick Bronte. The major event of her young life was the death of her mother in 1821, which created a lot of chaos. In 1824, Charlotte and her two older sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, were sent to the newly-opened Cowan Bridge Clergy Daughters' School. Conditions there were bad even by the standards of the time, and it was not long before both Maria and Elizabeth became ill enough to be sent home, where they both died of consumption in the spring of1825. Patrick brought Charlotte and her younger sister Emily, who had recently joined them at the school, back home as soon as the other girls became ill, but Charlotte in particular never forgot what the school had been like.

Charlotte's next adventure was going to school in Brussels with Emily in 1842. Charlotte's time there was brief, less than two years, but it led to her eventual writing of Villette beginning in 1852.

Back home, Charlotte lapsed into chronic unemployment and severe hypochondria, actually thinking she was going blind, just like her father was. In 1846 the three

sisters published a book of Poems, and though sales were very slow, the reviews were

good and spurred on further literary endeavors. Charlotte's novel of this time, The Professor, was actually rather bad, suffering from a less-than believable main character. In August of 1846 Charlotte began work on Jane Eyre. Though it was

published in 1847, Charlotte didn't tell her father about it until the next year, when the novel's success was plain. Jane Eyre is a classic literature masterpieces of Charlotte Bronte‟s of the British in the 19th century. 2.2 Background

“Jane Eyre is a classical work produced in Victorian time by Charlotte Bronte. This novel has attracted widely attention and discussions for over 150 years after its publishment”. On the surface, Jane Eyre is a love story about a poor young woman Jane Eyre and a rich man Mr. Rochester. But when we read it carefully, we can find out much deeper connotation, and we can understand that this work is not only a simple love story, but also reflects some social situations. Especially was the problem of the relationship between women and the traditional morality in Victorian time. In this novel, Bronte expresses strong dissatisfaction for females‟ unequal social status, and Jane Eyre was her own embodiment to resist the oppression of the social traditional morality and to break the age‟s fetter. And this novel also reflects that at that time, women have been already realized they should struggle for their independence of spirit and equal rights on many aspects in the social life. This thesis according to expounding the females‟ situations under the traditional morality in Victorian age and the analysis of heroine‟s behavior and thinking which broke the traditional morality at that time in Jane Eyre, to find the appearance of feminine consciousness and the demands of women for having equal social status like men in society and getting independence of life and spirit. Jane Eyre is a famous work written by Charlotte Bronte, and this novel was published in 1847 and became an immediate success. This thesis will research the “unwomanly” character of the heroine under the Victorian traditional morality. Analysis of Jane Eyre Purpose and Significance of study[J]2010 第四期 All of

Jane‟s behaviors showed her difference from traditional morality. In such a period, a little girl struggled for her equal rights in her guardian‟s family, a student made efforts to improve the living condition of school, a young governess pursued her real love and refused the proposal of the man she did not love. All of these behaviors disobeyed the traditional morality in Victorian age. She broke the model of “angel in the house” throughout her life. Her “unwomanly” character was also showed obviously.

3. The love view of Jane from following perspectives

3.1 The analysis of Jane‟s Love View from Jane‟s independent characters

When Jane was a litter girl, she was so unlucky and depended on others. she had no friend, whatever she did, she just do it by herself. So she built up independent character on everything from her young age. Mrs.Reed did not allow her children to associate with Jane, so, she had ever said:“They are not fit to associate with me” These words is the best illustrated fact that she is an independent girl in her inner world, including love. Jane pursues happiness, looking forward to get happiness and achieve the true love. In her inner world, she wishes that she can communicate with others‟ sincerity, not rather than rely on others to love or belong to others. She has her own soul. She wants to control the master of her spirit, stick to her own personality dignity.

When Mrs Fairfax knew that Jane and Rochester had fallen in love and prepared to get married, Mrs Fairfax thinks its unbelievable, she just says some words:“he has Do you belive him? Have you accept him? Mrs Fairfax looked at me bewildered I could have thought it He is a proud man all Rochesters were proud : and his father at least, liked money. After a later Mrs Fairfax repeated :„Equality of position and fortune is often advisable in such cases, and there are twenty years of difference in your

Jane Eyre is a novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë. It was published in London, England, in 1847 with the title Jane Eyre. An Autobiography under the pen name "Currer Bell". The Penguin edition describes it as an "influential feminist text" because of its in-depth exploration of a strong female character's feelings.

The novel merges elements of three distinct genres. It has the form of a Bildungsroman, a story about a child's maturation, focusing on the emotions and experiences that accompany growth to adulthood. The novel also contains much social criticism, with a strong sense of

morality at its core, and finally has the brooding and moody quality and Byronic character typical of Gothic fiction.

It is a novel often considered ahead of its time due to its portrayal of the development of a thinking and passionate young woman who is both individualistic, desiring for a full life, while also highly moral. Jane evolves from her beginnings as a poor and plain woman without

captivating charm to her mature stage as a compassionate and confident whole woman. As she matures, she comments much on the complexities of the human condition. Jane also has a deeply pious personal trust in God, but is also highly self-reliant. Although Jane suffers much, she is never portrayed as a damsel in distress who needs rescuing. For this reason, it is sometimes regarded as an important early feminist (or proto-feminist) novel.

This is a story about a special and unreserved woman who has been exposed to a hostile environment but continuously and fearlessly struggling for her ideal life. The story can be interpreted as a symbol of the independent spirit.

It seems to me that many readers’ English reading experience starts with Jane Eyer. I am of no exception. As we refer to the movie “Jane Eyer”, it is not surprising to find some differences because of its being filmized and retold in a new way, but the spirit of the novel remains----to be an independent person, both physically and mentally.

Jane Eyer was a born resister, whose parents went off when she was very young, and her aunt, the only relative she had, treated her as badly as a ragtag. Since Jane’s education in Lowwood Orphanage began, she didn’t get what she had been expecting——simply being regarded as a common person, just the same as any other girl around. The suffers from being humiliated and devastated teach Jane to be persevering and prize dignity over anything else.As a reward of revolting the ruthless oppression, Jane got a chance to be a tutor in Thornfield Garden. There she made the acquaintance of lovely Adele and that garden’s owner, Rochester, a man with warm heart despite a cold face outside. Jane expected to change the life from then on, but fate had decided otherwise: After Jane and Rochester fell in love with each other and got down to get marry, she unfortunately came to know in fact Rochester had got a legal wife, who seemed to be the shadow following

Rochester and led to his moodiness all the time ----Rochester was also a despairing person in need of salvation. Jane did want to give him a hand, however, she made up her mind to leave, because she didn’t want to betray her own principles, because she was Jane Eyer. The film has finally got a symbolist end: Jane inherited a large number of legacies and finally returned. After finding Rochester’s misfortune brought by his original mad wife, Jane chose to stay with him forever.

I don’t know what others feel, but frankly speaking, I would rather regard the section that Jane began her teaching job in Thornfield as the film’s end----especially when I heard Jane’s words “Never in my life have I been awaken so happily.” For one thing, this ideal and brand-new beginning of life was what Jane had been imagining for long as a suffering person; for another, this should be what the audiences with my views hoped her to get. But the professional judgment of producing films reminded me to wait for a totally different result: There must be something wrong coming with the excellence----perhaps not only should another section be added to enrich the story, but also we may see from the next transition of Jane’s life that “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you would get.” (By Forrest Gump’s mother, in the film “Forrest Gump”)

What’s more, this film didn’t end when Jane left Thornfield. For Jane Eyer herself, there should always be somewhere to realize her great ideal of being independent considering her fortitude, but for Rochester, how he can get salvation?

The film gives the answer tentatively: Jane eventually got back to Rochester. In fact, when Jane

met Rochester for the first time, she scared his horse and made his heel strained, to a certain extent, which meant Rochester would get retrieval because of Jane. We can consider Rochester’s experiences as that of religion meaning. The fire by his frantic wife was the punishment for the cynicism early in his life. After it, Rochester got the mercy of the God and the love of the woman whom he loved. Here we can say: human nature and divinity get united perfectly in order to let such a story accord with the requirements of both two sides. The value of this film may be due to its efforts to explore a new way for the development of humanism under the faith of religion.

Life is ceaselessly changing, but our living principles remain. Firmly persisting for the rights of being independent gives us enough confidence and courage, which is like the beacon over the capriccioso sea of life. In the world of the film, we have found the stories of ourselves, which makes us so concerned about the fate of the dramatis personae.

In this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, both physical and mental effects on us call for a balance. We are likely to find ourselves bogged down in the Sargasso Sea of information overload and living unconsciousness. It’s our spirit that makes the life meaningful.

Heart is the engine of body, brain is the resource of thought, and great films are the mirrors of life. In

dubitably, “Jane Eyer” is one of them.

A thoroughly engaging adaption of the brooding classic, this film rises above the turgid tone often imposed on other classics brought to the screen. Joan Fontaine turns in a brilliantly deceptively understated performance, and Orson Welles restrains from the scenery chewing that marred some of his own projects; there is surprising chemistry between them. At times, Welles is a downright "sexy" leading man! The script (credited to John Houseman and Aldous Huxley) captures the right "tone" of Victorian cruelty and repression.

Under Robert Stevenson's direction Fontaine/Welles seem to capture the essence of two abused outsiders resisting their attraction for one another, trying to adhere to convention. A strong supporting cast. There are brief

though memorable appearances by Agnes Moorehead, Elizabeth Taylor and Peggy Ann Garner as "young" Jane.

George Barnes' camera captures appropriately stark images of Ross Dowd and Thomas Little's sets. Charlotte Bronte's grim novel is well suited to the excellent B/W, cinematography: a memorable scene early in the film has

young Jane being punished by being forced to stand on a stool that is nearly in the center of a fan of shadows cast by the stair railing, It is almost reminiscent of expressionist German films of the Weimar years.

The film manages to entertain as well as inform. Purists may object to the last 3 lines of the film which hint at a slightly happier denouement than the book offered. In spite of that, Jane Eyre is still a nearly flawless film.

Jane Eyre, is a poor but aspiring, small in body but huge in soul, obscure but self-respecting girl. After we close the covers of the book, after having a long journey of the spirit, Jane Eyre, a marvelous figure, has left us so much to recall and to think:

We remember her goodness: for someone who lost arms and blinded in eyes, for someone who despised her for her ordinariness, and even for someone who had hurt her deeply in the past.

We remember her pursuit of justice. It’s like a companion with the goodness. But still, a virtuous person should promote the goodness on one side and must check the badness on the other side.

We remember her self-respect and the clear situation on equality. In her

opinion, everyone is the same at the God’s feet. Though there are differences

in status、in property and also in appearance, but all the human being are equal in personality.

We also remember her striving for life, her toughness and her confidence…

When we think of this girl, what she gave us was not a pretty face or a

transcendent temperament that make us admire deeply, but a huge charm of her personality.

everything.I really love her.She are both a great teacher and a good friend of mine.Sometimes when I am confuse(迷惑的),I will think of her.I will imagine what will she do if she is I.Why not read Jane Erye my friends!

就是-------尊严加爱/ The novel tells us that the best people to increase the dignity of life is love. Novels by the end of the row that this is such a life. Although I think this kind of outcome is too perfect, so perfect .. a little superficial, but I still respect this author The ideal of a better kind of life. ------- Is to increase the dignity of love / In modern society, few people will like Jane Eyre, for the love for the character and abandon all, and without looking back.'s Whole-hearted pursuit of pay, and pure like a glass of ice water .......

English: Jane eyre is a novel color autobiography, it explains the theme: people's value = dignity + love.

Jane. Love living in a parents, sponsor, grew up under the environment of treatment with peers, aunt abandon, cousin contempt, cousin insults and beating of a child... this is the dignity of the ruthless trample, but perhaps

because it all, Jane. Love and faith of infinite indomitable spirit, a kind of inner personality can win.

In rochester, she never because he is a teacher and the family status

■ 1 The red room

We could not go for a walk that afternoon. There was such a freezing cold wind, and such heavy rain, that we all stayed indoors.I was glad of it.I never liked long walks, especially in winter.I used to hate coming home when it was almost dark, with ice-cold fingers and toes, feeling miserable bccause Bessie, the nursemaid, was always scolding me.All the time I knew I was different from my cousins,Eliza,John and Georgiana Reed. They were taller and stronger than me,and they were loved.

These three usually spent their time crying and quarrelling, but today they were sitting quietly around their mother in the sitting-room.I wanted to join the family circle, but Mrs Reed,my aunt, refused Bessie had complainted about me.

'No,I'm sorry,Jane.Until I hear from Bessie,or see for myself, that you are really trying to behave better, you cannot be treated as a good, happy child, like my children.' 'What does Bessie say I have done?'I asked.

'Jane,it is not polite to question me in that way.If you cannot speak pleasantly,be quiet.' I crept out of the sitting-room and into the small room next door, where I chose a book full of pictures from the bookcase. I climbed on to the window-seat and drew the curtains,so that I was completely hidden.I sat there for a while.Sometimes I looked out of the window at the grey November afternoon, and saw the rain pouring down on the leafless garden. But most of the time I studied the book and stared, fascinated,at the pictures.Lost in the world of imagination,I forgot my sad, lonely existence for a while, and was happy,I was only afraid that my secret hiding-place might be discovered.

Suddenly the door of the room opened.John Reed rushed in.

'Where are you, rat?'he shouted. He did not see me behind the curtain.'Eliza!Georgy!Jane isn't here!Tell Mamma she's run out into the rain—what a bad animal she is!'

'How lucky I drew the curtain,'I thought. He would never have found me,because he was not very intelligent. But Eliza guessed at once where I was.

'She's in the window-seat,John,'she called from the sitting-room.So I came out immediately,as I did not want him to pull me out.

'What do you want?'I asked him.

'Say,“What do you want,Master Reed”,'he answered,sitting in an armchair.'I want you

to come here.'

John Reed was fourteen and I was only ten.He was large and rather fat.He usually ate too much at meals, which made him ill.He should have been at boarding school, but his mother, who loved him very much, had brought him home for a month or two, because she thought his health was delicate.

John did not love his mother or his sister, and he hated me He bullied and punished me,not two or three times a week, not once or twice a day,but all the time.My whole body trembled when he came near.Sometimes he hit me,sometimes he just threatened me,and I lived in terrible fear of him.I had no idea about how to stop him.The servants did not want to offend their young master, and Mrs Reed could see no fault in her dear boy.

So I obeyed John's order and approached his armchair, thinking how very ugly his face was.Perhaps he understood what I was thinking, for he hit me hard on the face.

'That is for your rudeness to Mamma just now,'he said,'and for your wickedness in hiding, and for looking at me like that, you rat!'I was so used to his bullying that I never thought of hitting him back.

'What were you doing behind that curtain?'he asked.

'I was reading,'I answered.

'Show me the book.'I gave it to him.

'You have no right to take our books,'he continued.'You have no money and your father left yor none. You ought to beg in the streets, not live here in comfort with a gentleman's family.Aayway, all these books are mine, and so is the whole house,or will be in a few years'time.I'll teach you not to borrow my books again.'He lifted the heavy book and threw it hard at me.

It hit me and I fell, cutting my head on the door.I was in great pain, and suddenly for the first time in my life,I forgot my fear of John Reed.

'You wicked,cruel boy!'I cried.'You are a bully!You are as bad as a murderer!'

'What!What!'he cried.'Did she say that to me?Did you hear,Eliza and Georgiana?I'll tell Mamma,but first„'

He rushed to attack me,but now he was fighting with a desperate girl.I really saw him as a wicked murderer.I felt the blood running down my face, and the pain gave me strength.I fought back as hard as I could. My resistance surprised him,and he shouted for help. His sisters ran for Mrs Reed, who called her maid,Miss Abbott, and Bessie. They pulled us apart and I heard them say,'What a wicked girl! She attacked Master John!'

Mrs Reed said calmly,'Take her away to the red room and lock her in there.'And so I was carried upstairs, arms waving and legs kicking.

As soon as we arrived in the red room,I became quiet again, and the two servants both started scolding me.

'Really,Miss Eyre,'said Miss Abbott,'how could you hit him? He's your young master!' 'How can he be my master?I am not a servant!'I cried.

'No,Miss Eyre, you are less than a servant, because you do not work, replied Miss Abbott. They both looked at me as if they strongly disapproved of me.

'You should remember, miss,'said Bessie,'that your aunt pays for your food and clothes, and you should be grateful. You have no other relations or friends.'

All my short life I had been told this, and I had no answer to it.I stayed silent, listening to

these painful reminders.

'And if you are angry and rude,Mrs Reed may send you away,'added Bessie.

'Anyway,'said Miss Abbott,'God will punish you,Jane Eyre, for your wicked heart.Pray to God,and say you're sorry.'They left the room, locking the door carefully behind them. The red room was a cold, silent room, hardly ever used, although it was one of the largest bedrooms in the house.Nine years ago,my uncle,Mr Reed, had died in this room, and since then nobody had wanted to sleep in it.

Now that I was alone I thought bitterly of the people I lived with.John Reed, his sisters, his mother, the servants, they all accused me,scolded me,hated me.Why could I never please them?Eliza was selfish, but was respected.Georgiana had a bad temper, but she was popular with everybody because she was beautiful John was rude, cruel and violent, but nobody punished him.I tried to make no mistakes, but they called me,naughty every moment of the day.Now that I had turned against John to protect myself, everybody blamed me.

And so I spent that whole long afternoon in the red room asking myself why I had to suffer and why life was so unfair.Perhaps I would run away,or starve myself to death.

Gradually it became dark outside. The rain was still beating on the windows, and I could hear the wind in the trees. Now I was no longer angry, and I began to think the Reeds might be right.Perhaps I was wicked.Did I deserve to die,and be buried in the churchyard like my uncle Reed?I could not remember him,but knew he was my mother's brother, who had taken me to his house when my parents both died.On his death bed he had made his wife, aunt Reed, promise to look after me like her own children.I supposed she now regretted her promise.

A strange idea came to me.I felt sure that if Mr Reed had lived he would have treated me kindly, and now,as I looked round at the dark furniture and the walls in shadow,I began to fear that his ghost might come back to punish his wife for not keeping her promise. He might rise from the grave in the churchyard and appear in this room!I was so frightened by this thought that I hardly dared to breathe.Suddenly in the darkness I saw a light moving on the ceiling. It may have been from a lamp outside, but in my nervous state I did not think of that.I felt sure it must be a ghost,a visitor from another world. My head was hot,my heart beat fast. Was that the sound of wings in my ears? Was that something moving near me?Screaming wildly,I rushed to the door and shook it.Miss Abbott and Bessie came running to open it.

'Miss Eyre,are you ill?'asked Bessie.

'Take me out of here!'I screamed.

'Why?What's the matter?'she asked.

'I saw a light, and I thought it was a ghost,'I cried, holding tightly on to Bessie's hand. 'She's not even hurt,'said Miss Abbott in disgust.'She screamed just to bring us here.I know all her little tricks.'

'What is all this?'demanded an angry voice.Mrs Reed appeared at the door of the room.'Abbott and Bessie,I think I told you to leave Jane Eyre in this room till I came.' 'She screamed so loudly,ma'am,'said Bessie softly.

'Let go off her hands,Bessie,'was Mrs Reed's only answer.'Jane Eyre, you need not think you can succeed in getting out of the room like this.Your naughty tricks will not work with me.You will stay here an hour longer as a punishment for trying to deceive us.'

'Oh aunt, please forgive me!I can't bear it!I shall die if you keep me here„'I screamed and kicked as she held me.

'Silence!Control yourself!'She pushed me,resisting wildly, back into the red room and locked me in.There I was in the darkness again, with the silence and the ghosts.I must have fainted.I cannot remember anything more.
