Note-taking is a skill that can help you do well in all your schoolwork. It can make you confident when you are studying. But unluckily, most students don’t know how to take notes.

★Write down key facts. If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that’s great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class. Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may focus on (关注) lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard. Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may say something important again and again.

★Ask. Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher to repeat (重复说) what you miss. If your teacher speaks too fast and you can’t follow what he is saying, you can ask him after class.

★Compare. Comparing your notes with your classmates’ can be good for your learning. It can also help you and your classmates correct (纠正) some mistakes.

★Organize. Note-taking also needs organization. Keep notes for each subject in one notebook, so

In Britain you may often hear “Drop in any time” or “Come to see me soon”, but you can’t really do that. People just say those things to make you feel welcome. It is better to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says “RSVP”, you should reply to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to go.

You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to come.” If, after accepting, you are unable to go, be sure to tell those who are expecting you as soon as possible that you will not be there. Although it is not necessarily expected that you give a gift to your host, it is considered polite to do so, especially if you have been invited for a meal. Flowers, chocolate, or a small gift are all appropriate(合适的). A thank-you note or telephone call after the visit is also considered polite and is an appropriate way to express your appreciation for the invitation.

A. In an invitation. B. In a guidebook. C. On a poster. D. In a newspaper.

For most people, the word “fashion” means “clothes”. But people may ask the question, “What clothes are in fashion?” And they use the adjective “fashionable” in the same way: “She was wearing a fashionable coat. His shirt was really a fashionable colour.”

But of course there are fashions in many things, not only in clothes. There are fashions in holidays, in restaurants, in films and books. There are even fashions in school subjects, jobs…and in languages.

Fashions change as time goes. If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will see that fashions have always changed. An English house of 1750 was different from one of 1650. A fashionable man in 1780 looked very different from his grandson in 1860.

Today fashions change very quickly. Some of this is natural. We hear about things much more quickly than in the past. Newspaper, radios, telephones and television send information from one country to another in a few hours.

New fashions mean that people will buy new things, so you see there is money in fashion.

( )1. From this passage we know that “fashion” means ______.

Most dictionaries will tell you a number of things about a language. There are three important things. These three things are spelling, pronunciation and meanings.

First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a world. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order—a,b,c and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the word ―poor‖—p,o,o,r – comes before ―poverty‖—p,o,v,e,r,t,y—and the word ―poverty‖ comes before ― power‖—p,o,w,e,r. The words are always given in an alphabtical order (按照字母顺序).

The second thing, a dictionary will tell you pronunciation. Most give phonetic(音标), or sound, alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you how a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.

The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meaning of words. You can look up a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will tell you all of the word’s meaning. For example, in English the common word ―get‖ has over 20 different meanings.

41.In the passage, which of the following is among(包括在…内)the three important things?

A. How to write a word well. B. How to use a word.

C. How to make a sentence. D. How to read a word correctly.

42.Of the three words: ―remove‖, ― remote‖ and ― remount‖, _____ in a dictionary.

A. ―remote‖ comes first and ―remove‖ comes last.

B. ―remove‖ comes first and ― remote‖ comes last.

C. ―remote‖ comes first and ―remount‖ comes last.

D, ―remove‖ comes first and ―remount‖ comes last.

43.Many words have_______.

A. several meanings B. few meanings C. one meaning D. no meaning

44.A better dictionary can tell you _______.

A. more of the word’s pronunciation. B. More of the word’s meaning.

C. More of the word’s spelling. D. More of grammar.

45.Phonetic alphabets are used to show _______.

A. spelling B. handwriting C. meanings D. pronunciation

A different way of teaching is widely used in our English study.

Before class, we make study plans first. Then we look up the new words, listen to the recording and read the text. When we meet problems we can't solve by ourselves, we always write them down in our notebooks.

In class, we sit in groups to discuss the problems freely. The teacher always offers help when we need. After discussion, it's time for us to give a report to the class. We also make conversations in pairs and practice a lot. It's really good for our listening and speaking.

How I study English

I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can’t learn it well. But English is very easy for me. I’m good at it. I’m very glad to tell you something about how I study English.

First, I think an interest(爱好)in English is very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new subject – English. It was fresh for me . I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and harder. Our English teacher often teaches us English songs, the songs sound nice. I often think how interesting English is!

Second, I think English is a foreign language. I should learn it well in the following ways: Listen to the teacher carefully, speak bravely, read aloud and have a good vocabulary(词汇). Then practice again and again, never be tired. And I also have a good habit: Asking whenever(不论何时)I have a question, I must make it clear by asking our English teacher. How happy I am when I understand!

Beside s this, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only interesting, but also useful. They help me understand a lot of things. So to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.

And I also do some exercises from our class magazines, and I often write English diaries. English has become a close friend of mine.

Now I have learned English for more than two years. I always keep the first position in our school. From these words, I hope every student can learn English well.

Swimming and English Learning

Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I’m afraid you’ll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It’s the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.

Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn’t matter. Just be relaxed, try to catch every word.

Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He’s afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don’t be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important when there’s nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It’s interesting and also a good way to practice your spo ken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you’ll make.

Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the

books we’re interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.

Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don’t be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.

Easier said than done. Well, let’s do more practice from now on. I’m sure you’ll learn English well in this way.

1. You can learn to swim by_______.

A. reading books about B. looking at others swimming

C. having lessons on it D. going into the river and learning

2. We should learn English by _______.

A. listening and speaking B. reading and writing

C. A and B D. swimming

3. What will you do with mistakes when you speak?

A. Don’t make mistakes. B. Study hard

C. Try not to speak English D. Don’t be afraid.

4. What’s more important for senior school students?

A. listening B. speaking C. reading and writing D. learning

5. We can listen to English ______, according to the passage.

A. by train B. on the radio C. every minute D. now and then

C

There is a common(1) language popular in every country in the world. All the people, old and young, men and women, must use it.

It’s everybody’s second language. It’s easy to learn, though(2) you don’t hear it. It’s sign language(3).

When you wave to a friend, you are using sign language. When you smile at someone, you mean to be friendly. When you put up your hand in class, you are saying, “Please ask me. I know the correct answer." When you put your finger in front of your mouth, you mean “ Be quiet." The deaf use sign language to talk to each other. There is even a university for the deaf in the United States. There are also TV programmes for the deaf people. They use sign language to tell everybody.
