Impressions of Pride and Prejudice

I’ve read a book called Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen during this winter holidays. Jane Austen was unmarried all her life. She was born in a mid-class family and was brought up in a comfortable environment with harmonious surroundings, so there’s not too many conflicts in her sight neither in her novel. In Pride and Prejudice she talked different ideas about love and marriage through different characters.

The novel has told an interesting story: Mr. Bennet is an English gentleman with an estate in Hertfordshire. He has five unmarried daughters but no sons while his inheritance must be inherited by a male, so Mrs. Bennet has been keen to seek husband for her daughters with great enthusiasm. One day the Bennets had a new neighbor called Bingley who was a wealthy bachelor and followed be the target of Mrs. Bennet. At a ball Bingley fell in love with Jane Bennet who’s the oldest daughter of the Bennets. Bingley’s friend Darcy also came to the ball and struck the sights, many girls liked him while he thought all of them couldn’t suit his preference, including Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy always shows others a impression

of pride, having found this Elizabeth began to hate Mr. Darcy. Before long Darcy fell in love with Elizabeth Bennett(second oldest daughter in the Bennets) because of her lovely behavior, while Elizabeth is disgusted by his pride and has a prejudice about him. The official Wickham was welcomed by the villagers, and Elizabeth also took a shine to him. Wickham told Elizabeth that his father had been the steward of the Darcys. The old Darcy had regarded Wickham as his own son and showed more love to him than to Mr. Darcy. After the old Darcy died, the property should be inherited by Wickham was all deprived by Mr. Darcy, also was his pastorate. All this increased Eli’s prejudice about Mr. Darcy. At another ball Mr. Darcy invited Elizabeth to dance with him, but Eli refused him. Eli’s elder male cousin Mr. Collin came to Hertfordshire to inherit the Bennett's property by rules, he wanted to marry with one of the Bennets. Having known that Jane was already engaged with Mr. Bingley, he asked Elizabeth to marry him but was seriously rejected. At last he proposed to Charllote who was Eli’s friend. Mr. Collins was good at flattering and he got the pastorate with the help of Lady Catherine. Once his

family was invited to Rosings Garden by Lady Catherine. Elizabeth also went there with Mr. Collin and Charllote. There she met Mr. Darcy who’s Lady Catherine’s nephew. Later in a garden, Sir William told Eli about Mr. Darcy’s latest act of dissuading Mr. Bingley’s marring Jane Bennet which caused Eli’s exceedingly anger. Then Mr. Darcy came to the Collins’ and confessed his love for Elizabeth, of course he was rejected impolitely. Afterwards Mr. Darcy wrote a letter to Eli in order to remove her misunderstandings of him. Elizabeth’s uncle and aunt were also impressed by Mr. Darcy’s politeness. Gradually Eli’s prejudice of Mr. Darcy diappeared. Eventually they became couple.

The writer Jane Austen disclosed mid-class young ladies’ different ideas of marriage and love through describing the different ways in which the Bennet girls doing with their marriage problems ,and this undoubtedly shows the writer’s idea about love and marriage: it’s wrong to get married just for property, wealth and status while neither would it be without caring about those elements.Jane Austen just attached great significance to marriage through her novel by telling people that marriage should

be regarded carefully cause it is not a game you could just enjoy without prudent consideration. She also wanted to deliver information that marriage should be based on real love between the lovers. The female subject Elizabeth is a mid-class girl, and Darcy proposed to her regardless of the gap between them, but Elizabeth refused because of his pride had formed Eli’s prejudice. Cause Darcy’s pride was a suggest of status gap between he and Eli, he wouldn’t have the same thought with Eli and consequently the ideal marriage. But later Darcy’s doings especially his change of the prideful manner eliminated Eli’s misunderstandings and prejudice about him, and Eli accepted his proposal. Those two opposite attitudes reflect female’s pursue of independent personality and equality. I think Elizabeth has personality ethic which caused her independent idea about love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life. There’re also Eli’s sisters’ love stories served as contrasts to the female subject’s ideal marriage, such as Charlotte and Collin’s life: they do had a luxury life, but there’s no real love between them and this kind of marriage is

surely a tragedy of society.

Love and marriage is a constant topic among human, In Pride And Prejudice, Jane Austen told a story about five marriages for us in her rational and humorous writing tone, which explains the truth of marriage: love. Marriage should be based on love, while it can’t have access to happiness when just based on money or appearance. And a deeper knowledge is needed when we start our affection . Exclude vanity and prejudice, and think about each other's moral character objectively, and we can know someone better and more exact---- only good moral character deserves real love.

The two pairs lovers in the book, Elizabeth and Darcy, Jane and Bingley, mainly based their marriage on love and excellent moral character, though thinking about looks and family background to small extent. Elizabeth and Darcy's love story is most relished especially. During twisting journey from they hated each other to finally fell in love and got married, Elizabeth and Darcy gradually got to know each other, removed prejudice, and discard meaningless so-called face. Eventually they realized and fell in love with the virtues of each other in readers’ expectation and wishes. Furthermore that Elizabeth refused Darcy's courtship before accepting, still further show her defiance of marriages without love. On the contrary, Charlotte, Elizabeth's friend, who thinks she is not beautiful besides having no money, chose to combine with stupid and shallow Collins out of economic considerations, and lived a ensured but dull marriage life. Similarly, Elizabeth's sister, Lydia, as well as her father's marriage is unfortunate, for they were confused by the beauty of appearance, while ignoring the moral character. They would be bound to regret for their choice all their life .

总而言之,在婚姻面前,我们必须向爱情看齐;在爱情面前,我们必须以人的品德为准;在品德面前,我们必须客观公正。

All in all, we must be for love alignment in the face of marriage; and we must will be subject to moral character in the face of love; and we must be objective and fair in the face of judging the moral character.

Prejudice is the worst evil of man – my thoughts on "Pride and Prejudice"

After reading "Pride and Prejudice ", I have a kind of boundless feeling. The characters in the book seem to live in my heart, and they all seem to come out to be by my side. Moreover, shortcomings of them one by one were reflected by people around me. With the end of the book, the characters in the book each have a different ending, which also seems full of variables; however, I still like what attract me and dislike those disgust me.

The whole book begins with the story of the Bennets and also ends with the family life of the Bennets, and in the middle the whole book describes the emotional entanglements between the young men and women. Besides, the remarks and the attitudes of the people around the Bennets, also from one side reflects the social form of that time - the prejudice that exists at all times between people, and the arrogance of the upper stratum. The end of the story is really satisfactory, but the process is extremely bumpy. Throughout the text, almost everyone has a bias to others precisely because of which, the story twists and turn.

For people who have suspicions, there will not be any loss whereas those who were suspected have to live in the shadows and can not understand why they get uneven treatment. Darcy seems to be such a role because the character from childhood is brought up to feel arrogant that lots of people are parroting, wishing they could have put more demeaning on him. But no one is willing to put aside their own prejudices and understand the authenticity of these rumors. Even Elizabeth who detests unfair things, becomes to hate Darcy and thinks the rumor is naturally true just because Darcy doesn’t invite her to dance. For a long period of time, Elizabeth with prejudice communicates with Darcy. At the same time, because of prejudice, Darcy helps Bingley make the wrong decision to not marry Jane’s elder sister, resulting in the love of Jane and Bingley almost died. Naturally, nothing good result comes between Darcy and Elizabeth but mutual disgust and more prejudices.

As far as I am concerned, I always think that I am a reasonable person, but seeing some descriptions of the book I can not help but feel some exaggeration. However when I finish the whole book I find that I, more than once, produced suspicion and disgust to Darcy. Things become different when I find out that Darcy was misunderstood and I feel regret for my own prejudice. Prejudice comes from people’s subjections, or is close to the attitudes of people. Some people are ready to have a prejudice against people or things because of their own subjection, or more specifically, because of idealism. These people are willing to evaluate things with their own idea to be the foundation. For example, Miss Bingley never fails to be malicious to Elizabeth, even Jean. In the final analysis, she just doesn't want to find the truth with her own eyes, or she doesn't care about what kind of result this prejudice will have –if it has nothing to do with herself, it’s surely good, and if it can bring her interests, it’s much better. And the other kind of man is too stupid to believe people’s speech or attitude as Mr. Bingley, excessively believing Darcy's opinion. For his own suspicions, he almost missed his true love. Elizabeth is the same, she is more willing to be with Wickham, and becomes more and more hateful to Darcy.

The book embodies the person's moods all the time and gradually produces acute contradictions, making readers have to chose a position and then take a tumble of consciousness to the fact that he should also be infected with prejudice emotions. But whether the book makes a person infected with these emotions, or emotional itself exists and only books make your more true expression comes out, brings various opinions of different readers.

Pride and Prejudice

Introduction:

As we all know , Pride and Prejudice is one of Jane Ausen’s representative works . This book is considered as the treasure of the world liberary and is one of the world’s ten great classics . The author, Jane Austen, was a British novelist who was born in a small country town. Her father was a local vicar. Austin didn't go to regular schools, but she read many literary works at her parents' guidance. She started writing about the age of 20, and published six novels. Jane was unmarried all her life. For living in a small country town, contacting the medium and small landlords, pastor as well as their quiet and comfortable living environment, there were no significant social contradictions in her works. She described a truthful picture of her world, especially the marriage and love between gentleman and ladies by her meticulous feminine observation. The style of her works is humorous and rich in comic conflicts, so many readers love them. From the late eighteenth to the nineteenth century, vulgar and boring sentimental novels and gothic novels were full in British literary. But Jane’s novel iconoclastic showed mid-class of daily life and pastoral scenery in British countryside at that time which had not been capitalist industrial revolution impacted,. Although the breadth and depth of the reflection was limited, it played good effect to change the vulgar atmosphere in novels. Summary:

Why is it called pride and prejudice? Elizabeth and Darcy’s story can explain. Darcy loved Elizabeth at first sight at the ball. But the arrogant character caused by the growing environment stopped his initiatively close to Elizabeth. Elizabeth as anyone else believed he is haughty and stubborn. The more Darcy loved Elizabeth, the more he would not shown on the surface instead of making apathy. He thought if Elizabeth would be proud after knowing he loved her, so his character of pride stopped this happening. Elizabeth prejudiced against Darcy deeper and deeper. In her eyes, he even became a sinister, hypocritical people. As Darcy more loved Elizabeth, he finally was unable to restrain to show his love to Elizabeth. He certainly thought Elizabeth would accept, but he didn't know how about his image in Elizabeth’s eyes. So he was surprised when Elizabeth refused him. His arrogance had suffered

a blow. But from then on, they began to candid exchange, then misunderstandings gradually eliminated. Later, inadvertently knowing that Darcy properly handled her sister Lydia and Wick ham’s elopement, Elizabeth’s attitude changed. Darcy was not arrogant as others thought. After Elizabeth’s rejection,he began to reflect on the self-examination and treated people with more populist. Finally, regardless of his aunt’s strong objection and concept of family, Darcy proposed to Elizabeth again. Elizabeth willingly consented. She began to appear her lively side to Darcy.

Comments:

In this great book , the author amply demonstrates her point love and marriage . But they have great background . At that time , according to the social conditions in Britain , a good marriage for a young woman was critical . This phenomenon was closely associated with the British society and the status of women in the society . In the 19th century , women were not well respected compared with the ones in the present society . There was no equality between woman and man . Women were considered to be inferior to men in terms of intelligence and capacity . The central life of women was force d to be staying at home , their roles were to deal with the family affairs , such as taking care of the children and serving for the husband .

Pride and prejudice are our common weakness and shortcomings. Every person is easy to be d riven by his own subjective impression. So it can comment easily to other people under incorrectness, then it will cause misunderstandings between each ..A person’s first impression can affect many things. Not he must change, but you should more deeply know about him, then you will have more objective opinion, just the heroine's opinion of darcy in the novel changed because off knowing the people in the world no longer have pr id e and prejudice these two bad behavior customs, this world will more harmonious and friendly.

As far as I considered, people can’t divide people by rich and poor. Everyone is equal on every aspect such as character and knowledge. No one can be arrogant because of wealthiness or high status, and also can't be self-abased with economic poverty. This truth relating to our daily l we should not be proud or produce arrogance mood when we make a few achievements,. Learning is endless. We should know that there must be many people clever than ourselves. We must think out a way to study better than others. The vanity is caused by

prejudice in the text. One cannot distinguish good and bad just because the beautiful and ugly appearance. Elizabeth hated Darcy because of Darcy's arrogance generating by wealth and Wacke r 's rumors. A person’s first impression can affect many things. Not he must change, but you should more deeply know about him, then you will have more objective opinion, just be the heroine's opinion of Darcy in changed because of knowing. the people in the world no longer have pride and prejudice these two bad behavior customs, this world will more harmonious and friendly.

After finishing reading this novel , I learned a lot of it . First , we can not have prejudice against someone blindly . To understand a people , you can not only through other’s expression about him , you must perceive reality by yourself . Second , it’s wrong to get married for the property , money and position , true love is beyond such factors . The last aspect , when we realize the mistake we make , we must acknowledge is bravely and immediately , then make it for the better .

ChapterⅠ. Introduction

Among all the novels written by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice has been valued as most successful and popular masterpiece. The ladies and gentlemen in the landed gentry, the plots of this novel revolve around the intricacies of courtship and marriage between members of her class, which is great attraction to many readers. In Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, I made an analysis of those four types of marriages and came to a conclusion that the formation of four different marriage. Nearly each marriage has a different flavor; each person’s character reflects his or her marriage and their attitudes towards marriage; each marriage was reflected by the society of those days and Austen’s personal experiences. The central role, marriage, is discussed in the famous opening line of this novel.

It is truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want a wife. However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering the neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters. ( P.1 )

The first line also defines Jane’s book as a piece of literature that connects itself to the 18th century period. Pride and Prejudice is 18th century because of the emphasis on man in his social environment rather than in his individual conditions. ①

And what factors could affect a good marriage? What are the elements of marriage? In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen presents several different marriages to indicate that a happy and strong marriage takes time to build and must be based on mutual feelings, understanding, and respect; hasty marriage based on superficial qualities will not last long and will lead to unhappiness. This paper will firstly display some different marriages in the novel, such as the successful one, happy one, common one, sex-oriented one, etc. then in the third chapter, it will discuss the main factors that are made up of a successful and happy marriage. Finally, at the end of this paper, it tries to form a deeper idea of the marriage.

ChapterⅡ. Four marriages in the novel

There are several different marriages presented in this novel. These marriages contrast each other to reveal Jane Austen’s opinions and thoughts on the subject of marriage. In this paper, it shows several of these marriages through the personality analysis of men.

1.Mr.Bennet’s moral marriage

In contrast to Elizabeth, her father, Mr. Bennet, is an example of living with one’s mistakes.

“He had married a woman whose weak understanding and illiberal mind, had very early in their marriage put an end to all real affection for her. Respect, esteem and confidence, had vanished for ever; and all his views of domestic happiness were overthrown” (P.209)

Mrs. Bennet's main interest in life is to find suitable husbands for her five daughters, while Mr. Bennet would like to isolate himself from his family and find refugee in his library or in mocking his wife. Mr. Bennet also can be considered as an

irresponsible father because he lacks of responsibility towards his family and he encourages his younger daughters to elope with Wickham. So from every point of view, their marriage is just a common one, like hundreds of thousands couples.

2.Fitzwilliam Darcy’s perfect marriage

It is clear that Jane Austen does not believe falling in love at the first sight, before they open their love and get married, Elizabeth and Darcy have to understand and overcome their own pride and prejudice before they can appreciate each other. On their first meeting, the two major characters make a bad start. They do not fall in love at the first sight. On the contrary, the rich and handsome Darcy is too proud to lower himself, and offends the lively and intelligent girl Elizabeth. When he thinks he is rich and owns a large estate in Derbyshire, he says: “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me.” On the other hand, Darcy is so proud of his social class that he is prejudiced against the Bennet family’s improper manner and connections to the working class (Elizabeth’s aunts and uncles). Later, after a series of events, Darcy does have a strong sense of honor and virtue, and he begins to fall in love with Elizabeth. At last, he proposes with great condescension. Thinking that Darcy dislikes her, Elizabeth dose not really notice when Darcy’s attitude toward her begins to change. Later Darcy writes a letter to Elizabeth to explain his feelings. After reading this letter, Elizabeth’s view towards him begins to change, when Darcy proposes again, Elizabeth accepts. And for their true love, the pride has been weakened and prejudice disappeared.②

3.Charles Bingley’s happy marriage

This is a parallel love story. The marriage between Jane Bennet and Bingle is also an example of successful marriage. Elizabeth’s sister Jane is the eldest in the family. Beautiful, good-tempered, sweet, amiable, and modest, she is universally well liked. She refuses to judge anyone badly. Mr. Bingley, much like Jane, is an amiable and good-tempered person. He is not concerned with class differences, and Jane’s poor family connections cannot stop him from falling in love with Jane. Jane Austen expresses her opinion of this through Elizabeth in the novel,

“Really believed all his Bingley expectations of felicity to be rationally founded, because they had for basis the excellent understanding, and super- excellent disposition of Jane, and a general similarity of feeling and taste between her and himself.” (P.308)

However, unlike Darcy and Elizabeth, there is a flaw in their relationship ― both characters are too innocent and too good-hearted to act heavily against the external force that may attempt to separate them. As to Jane, she never thinks ill for any body and she shows her warm sympathetic feelings in an easy manner. Her character is vividly showed in many parts of the novel. And no doubt that Jane’s father says, “Your tempers are by no means unlike. You are each of you so complying, that nothing will ever be resolved on; so easy, that every servant will cheat you; and so generous, that you will always exceed your income” (P.309)

4.George Wickham’s sex-oriented marriage

Obviously, Lydia and Wickham’s marriage is an example of a bad marriage. Lydia

Bennet, the youngest of the Bennet daughters, is devoted to a life of dancing, fashions, gossips and flirting. Wickham is an officer in the regiment stationed at Meryton. Wickham is quickly judged to be a perfectly good and amiable man because of his friendliness and the ease of his manners. However, he is mean and wicked. “A curious degree of sexual attraction often goes with a lively, unreliable disposition, which may either be somewhat superficial but perfectly well-meaning, or driven by circumstance which it has not the strength to withstand, become that of a scoundrel.” He elopes with Lydia with no intention of marrying her and is just only made to do so by Darcy’s intervention. Lydia also does not take into consideration her marriage, the personality of her husband, or the prospects of their marriage. ③Therefore, their marriage is based on appearance and youthful impulse. Once these qualities can no longer be seen by each other, and once strong relationship slowly fades away, problems rise as a result. As in the novel, Lydia and Wickham’s marriage gradually disintegrates; Lydia becomes a regular visitor at her two elder sister’s homes when” her husband was gone to enjoy himself in London or Bath”

Through their relationship, we can see they are “a couple who were only brought together because their passions were stronger than their virtue” and “affection for her soon sunk into indifference; her lasted a little longer.” In their marriage, Jane Austen shows that hasty marriage based on superficial qualities quickly wither and lead to unhappiness.④

Chapter Ⅲ. Three Factors in Affecting a Marriage

In this novel, Jane Austen, by describing seven different marriages, expressed her viewpoint. To sum up, there are three main factors that affect marriage in the eighteenth century.

1. Love

In Jane Austen's novel, the theme of love and marriage makes her as a different writer with romanticism. Once an anonymous reader comments love in this novel as follows, “Love is holding hands in the street, and marriage is holding arguments in the street. Love is a universal feeling, and it can make you happy but often it hurts, but love's only special when you give it to someone who is really worth it”.⑤

In the novel, with regard to marriage, unlike Charlotte, Elizabeth chooses to remain true love to her best by her heart and her own good sense. She believes that marriage should be based on mutual understanding and feelings. Some readers may think that Elizabeth does not really love Mr. Darcy, only Mr. Darcy loves her. It’s not quite so. Jane Austen seems to appreciate Elizabeth's feelings to Darcy because "gratitude and esteem are good foundations of affection." On the visit of Pemberley, as Elizabeth stood before the canvas, "a more gentle sensation" arises. When she met Darcy unexpectedly and walked with him, all that in her mind was "whether she was still dear to him." After Lydia's run- away, when Darcy had got the news and left the room, Elizabeth recalled their mutual experience and hoped that they could continue their mutual feelings. All these, as well as Elizabeth's later inner struggle to Darcy indicate that she really loves Darcy. Therefore, her marriage is founded on her own feelings, affection and understanding.

Impressions of Pride and Prejudice

I‟ve read a book called Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen during this winter holidays. Jane Austen was unmarried all her life. She was born in a mid-class family and was brought up in a comfortable environment with harmonious surroundings, so there‟s not too many conflicts in her sight neither in her novel.

Bennet. At a ball Bingley fell in love with Jane Bennet who‟s the oldest daughter of the Bennets. Bingley‟s friend Darcy also came to the ball and struck the sights, many girls liked him while he thought all of them couldn‟t suit his preference, including Elizabeth.

All this increased Eli‟s prejudice about Mr. Darcy. At another ball Mr. Darcy invited Elizabeth to dance with him, but Eli refused him. Eli‟s elder male cousin Mr. Collin came to Hertfordshire to inherit the Bennett's property by rules, he wanted to marry with one of the Bennets. Having known that Jane was already engaged with Mr. Bingley, he asked Elizabeth to marry him but was seriously rejected. At last he proposed to Charllote who was Eli‟s friend. Mr. Collins was good at flattering and he got the pastorate with the help of Lady Catherine. Once his

family was invited to Rosings Garden by Lady Catherine. Elizabeth also went there with Mr. Collin and Charllote. There she met Mr. Darcy who‟s Lady Catherine‟s nephew. Later in a garden, Sir William told Eli about Mr. Darcy‟s latest act of dissuading Mr. Bingley‟s marring Jane Bennet which caused Eli‟s exceedingly anger. Then Mr. Darcy came to the Collins‟ and confessed his love for Elizabeth, of course he was rejected impolitely. Afterwards Mr. Darcy wrote a letter to Eli in order to remove her misunderstandings of him. Elizabeth‟s uncle and aunt were also impressed by Mr. Darcy‟s politeness. Gradually Eli‟s prejudice of Mr. Darcy diappeared. Eventually they became couple.

The writer Jane Austen disclosed mid-class young ladies‟ different ideas of marriage and love through describing the different ways in which the Bennet girls doing with their marriage problems ,and this undoubtedly shows the writer‟s idea about love and marriage: it‟s wrong to get married just for property, wealth and status while neither would it be without caring about those elements.Jane Austen just attached great significance to marriage through her novel by telling people that marriage should

be regarded carefully cause it is not a game you could just enjoy without prudent consideration. She also wanted to deliver information that marriage should be based on real love between the lovers. The female subject Elizabeth is a mid-class girl, and Darcy proposed to her regardless of the gap between them, but Elizabeth refused because of his pride had formed Eli‟s prejudice. Cause Darcy‟s pride was a suggest of status gap between he and Eli, he wouldn‟t have the same thought with Eli and consequently the ideal marriage. But later Darcy‟s doings especially his change of the prideful manner eliminated Eli‟s misunderstandings and prejudice about him, and Eli accepted his proposal. Those two opposite attitudes reflect female‟s pursue of independent personality and equality. I think Elizabeth has personality ethic which caused her independent idea about love and marriage and in consequence she earned a happy life. There‟re also Eli‟s sisters‟ love stories served as contrasts to the female subject‟s ideal marriage, such as Charlotte and Collin‟s life: they do had a luxury life, but there‟s no real love between them and this kind of marriage is

surely a tragedy of society.

On Austen’s views on Marriage in Pride and Prejudice

Abstract:

Jane Austen, the greatest realistic writer in English literature, writes altogether six complete novels centering on love and marriage.Pride and Prejudice is regarded as her masterpiece. In this novel,Austen describes a narrow range of society:the middle class squires and fair young ladies in country surrounding from her own experiences.Through her description of four different marriages and analysis of the main characters’ personality in the specific period of time which put great influence on the result of marriages should be based on love and mutual understanding as well as certain economic condition. That is Jane Austen’s viewpoint on marriage, she believes that love is the most fundamental condition for a happy marriage, which should be base on a large mount of money or a considerable fortune. This view which constantly appears in her novels,is not determined by her morality but by the historical background while the author’s life experience and living surroundings are also necessary elements.

Key Words: Jane Austen ; Pride and Prejudice ; love and marriage

“Jane Austen (1775-1817) was born in Hampshire, a country priest family located in Hants, the village of Kingston, Sidemen in north England. She was a beautiful, talented middle class woman with extraordinary temperament and good cultivation. Her six novels-Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey, Manshifeierde Manor, Emma, Persuasion all describe more than marriage.”. (Wang Shouren, 2005)

However, her marriage is like a blank paper in her 42 years real lifetime. Going through the finest time, but eventually without meeting a comfortable partner, she gives up her love. Going through the sweet and bitter feeling which helps her to write the great work pride and prejudice.

Pride and Prejudice ,published in 1813,is considered as her masterpiece which is also regarded as one of the best novels in English literature. In this novel,Austen describes a narrow range of society,a wealthy and middle class circle in countryside

which she knows from her own experiences. This novel actually tells about trial things, matters of love, marriage and family life between country squires and fair ladies in the 18th century.

But Pride and Prejudice reveals more than these love stories. The dominant role in the novel is marriage, which is discussed in the famous opening line:

it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of

a good fortune must be in want of a wife. However little known the feelings

or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth

is so well fixed in minds of the surrounding families. (Austen,2004)

Jane Austen presents four different marriages in the novel to indicate that a happy marriage with firm foundation takes time to build and must be based on mutual feelings, understanding and respect;instant marriage based on superficial qualities will not last long and will lead to unhappiness. What factors could put great influence on a happy marriage ? And what are Jane Austen’ own views on marriage ?In the following context ,I’ll introduce you Jane Austen’s views on marriage .

1) Charlotte and Collins’ marriage (based on money or benefit)

The first marriage presents in the novel is the marriage between Charlotte and Collins.Collins is a conceited and foolish young man,he would inherit the estate of Longbourn and the property of Mr. Bennet after his death, which would deprive the five daughters of Mr. Bennet of everything. Collins is pompous and narrow-minded who never possess his own conception of love,he intends to get married merely because it is the specific advice and recommendation of Lady Catherine de Bourgh. To begin with,he makes up his mind to marry one of the daughters of Mr. Bennet as a way of reconciliation with the Longbourn family. The beautiful Jane, undoubtedly is his first choice. But when he is informed that Jane is privately engaged,he easily decides that Elizabeth who is equally next to Jane in birth and beauty would be his second goal as an alternative.Collins makes two times of proposal to Elizabeth but she refused him in return.Having been refused by Elizabeth,he quickly marries Charlotte. In the novel

Austen presents how soon Collins makes this decision:“in as short time as Mr. Collins’ long speeches would allow, everything was settled between them to the satisfaction of both”. We can see here that his love to Charlotte is by no means sincere and ardent. To Collins,a wife is his real concern,it doesn’t matter who she is! Charlotte seems to be a mediocre and vain young lady . She accepts Collins solely from the pure and disinterested desire of an establishment. Her plainness and eagerness to get married prevent her from discovering Collins’ pomposity and foolishness.

2) Lydia and Wickham’s marriage (based on vanity and carelessness)

The combination of dissolute Wickham and empty-minded Lydia results in a sex-orientated marriage. Wickham first appears as a very charming fellow. But his character,on the contrary, was mean and wicked.Jane Austen describes him like this in the novel:

A curious degree of sexual attraction often goes with a lively, unreliable

disposition, which may either be somewhat superficial but perfectly well-meaning, or driven by circumstance which it has not the strength to withstand, become that of a scoundrel.

Lydia is a stout,well-grown girl of fifteen, also is the favorite one to her mother, whose affection has brought her into public at an early age.Lydia is also an empty-minded girl who never ceases seeking her own fun and sexual excitement. The only interest in her life is to flirt with red-coated official in a militia regiment in the neighborhood. Therefore, her elopement with Wickham is not very sudden. It really leaves us some rooms to contemplate Wickham’s real motivation.Lydia is not rich,it seems that it is not sensible for Wickham to elope with her.Nevertheless, further reading tells us that Wickham’s real motivation.First,he is a dissolute man who never ceases seeking sexual passion.Second,he avails himself of a chance to flee his creditors. His flight is rendered necessary by distress of circumstances rather than by his affection to Lydia.

3)Jane and Bingley’s marriage (based on same interests and love)

The marriage between Jane and Bingley is an example of good marriage.

Jane, the eldest in the Bennet family, who is beautiful,good-tempered,sweet,amiable and modest. She always refuses to judge anyone badly.Bingley, much like Jane,is an amiable and good-mannered person. He is not concerned with class differences and Jane’s poor family connections which can not stop him from falling in love with Jane.Jane Austen expresses her opinion of this through Elizabeth in the novel: Elizabeth really believed all this Bingley expectations of felicity to be rationally founded, because they had for basis the excellent understanding, and super-excellent disposition of Jane, and a general similarity of feeling and taste between her and himself.

Bingley is far from the man who is strong and determined which always makes their love stroy in danger,When their romance goes smoothly,he leaves Jane suddenly because Bingley is gullible to believe anyone, under the influence of Darcy,he begins to doubt Jame’s affection to himself,so he leaves her without saying goodbye.Having been informed of Bingley’s departure,Jane is in great distress, but she pretends to be all right and says nothing about her sadness.Jane is liable to keep a passive attitude towards anything. Finally when all misunderstanding is clarified,he comes back to Jane through Darcy and Elizabeth’s assistance.

4) Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage (based on true love)

The combination Darcy and Elizabeth, results in a successful marriage.Darcy appears to be a handsome man with arrogant manners while Elizabeth is a witty and sensible lady. She is always ready to change herself once she fines her mistakes. The first impression they leave to each other is not good,Elizabeth takes prejudice on Darcy because she thinks that Darcy is too proud and look down upon the middle-class girls, while Darcy shows his pride when he expresses his affections and proposes to Elizabeth.Darcy begins to love Elizabeth gradually by constantly getting along with her.He admires her for her intelligence and disposition,so Darcy tries to understand Elizabeth by every possible means. His first proposal to Elizabeth is the culmination of the novel.Darcy who suffers from his own long-suppressed feeling decides to propose to Elizabeth,it is not easy for him to accept her regardless of her humble family and inferior position, but his sincere affection for Elizabeth makes him conquer his own pride and propose to her.Unfortunately Elizabeth refuses him for his

arrogance.Darcy is embarrassed and ruffled but he does not lose control of himself. He acts as a real gentleman and asks Elizabeth to forgive him taking up so much of her time.Undoubtedly,Darcy’s love to Elizabeth is ardent and sincere, even Elizabeth herself is quite astonished at his court and sorry for the pain he has suffered. As Austen writes in her novel:

that he should have been in love with her for so many months! So much in love as to wish to marry her in spite of all the objection which had prevented his friend’s marrying her sister, and must appear at lease with equal force in his own case, was almost incredible! Darcy makes his mind to change himself ,which proves that his love to Elizabeth is not merely an overnight’s impulse. After having been accused of arrogance and selfishness,Darcy changes greatly and wins Elizabeth’s love in return. It is the real love that causes all these amazing changes.

Jane Austen’s view of marriage: “Jane Austen is particularly preoccupied with the relationship between men and women in love. Stories of love and marriage provide the major themes in all her novels, in which female characters are always playing an active part. In their pursuit of a marriage, they are usually categorized into three their types according to their different attitudes: 1.Those who would marry for material wealth and social position; 2.Those who would marry just for beauty and passion; 3.And those who would marry for true love with a consideration of the partner’s personal merit for true love with a consideration of the partner’s merit as well as his economical and social status. In another word, Jane Austen tries to say that it is wrong to marry just with money, but it is also wrong to marry without it.Therefor,I think Austen’s opinions on marriage have several influential factors. As follows:

1)Women’s social status

The position of women in the 19th century was very low.At that time, feminism was not paid attention to by common people.Practically, everyone believed that men were the dominant sex in the society.According to Ilannah More, “to a woman moral excellence is the grand object of education;and of moral excellence, domestic life is to woman the appropriate sphere.”
