The Analysis of Frankenstein’s Humanity

Mary Shelley, one of the most famous female writers in the science fiction, wrote her famous science fiction Frankenstein in 1818. She leaded the romantic period. As her master work, Frankenstein is always regarded as the pioneer of the science fiction.

Mary Shelley mainly told readers a story that Victor Frankenstein wanted to create a good people to help the human, but in fact, he created a monster who is ugly, so that Victor put him away. Because of the prejudice, the monster became a bad man and killed some people in order to revenge Victor. At the end of the novel, the monster regret what he has down, he chose to kill himself. It is a bad ending novel.

This paper will analysis the reasons which causes the bad ending. This paper pays more attention on the humanity that causes the bad ending. The first reason that causes the tragedy is the desire of Victor Frankenstein. From the fiction, the readers can see that although Victor wanted to make a perfect man that can benefit the human. In the fact, he only wanted to make a successful invention to make himself be famous all over the world. The result was not as good as he thought, he created a monster, so Victor abandoned the monster. When he faced his invention, he scared what he had done. What he made may destroy his career. At that time, the monster was just like a baby, he did not know anything. Victor did not teach him but put him away. From the explantation, the

paper analyses Victor’s desire is the ambition of being success and famous. So the Victor’s desire is the first reason that contributes to the bad ending.

The second reason that causes the tragedy is the people who was saved or helped by the monster. From the novel, the readers can see that at first, the monster was a good man. He helped the old man who was lonely; he saved the little girl who was drowning. However, the monster did not receive any gratitude, but the beat because of his appearance. Then the monster thought that no one would regard him as a good man, so he decided to revenge the Victor. From this reasons, he turned himself a good man to a bad man. So, the people’s attitude is the second reason that causes the bad ending.

The third reason that causes the tragedy is the loneliness. From the novel, we can see, even everyone in the world regarded him as a monster; he promised to the Victor that if Victor could create a peer for him, he would not hurt anyone. Victor refused his suggestion, and then the monster thinks that he was the only man who was so strange and ugly, he was very lonely. Then, he decided to revenge the Victor. So lonely is the third reason that causes the bad ending.

The fourth reason is that most people believed that everyone was good when he was born, which made him bad was the environment and the society he lived. People needed to treat the people around them kindly,

then they may help a person. From the novel, the readers can see that there are many situations that can make the monster a good man. If Victor did not abandon the monster, if the people who was saved or helped by monster treated him kindly, the monster would be a good one.

There are many reasons that make the monster from innocent to evil. If the readers read the novel carefully, they can find that the monster is not really so bad. At first, he saved the drowning girl, took care of the old man. At the end of the novel, he regret what he had down, and killed himself. The writer thinks that there are many reasons which result in the tragedy, such as Victor, the people who monster meets, the society and the monster himself. In fact, people had many chances to change the result, but they didn’t. They were scared of him and fighting to him. In this situation, the monster still did not hurt them. If one of them could take care of the monster, he wouldn’t kill Victor’s friend and relatives. In this thesis, the writer summaries these reasons that contribute to the tragedy, it is Victor’s desire, people’s attitude, the loneliness and the society.

Frankenstein was a good scientist. He wanted to use elestricity to help people, and he wanted to discover the secrets of life.He worked very hard on these two things. He wanted to create a new life, but he was not allowed to make such medical experiments. He made a body in his laboratory and he did not let anybody enter his labtatory or his flat while he was doing this awful work.He bought or stole all the pieces of human body that he needed, and slowly and carefully, he put them all together. He used electricity from lighting to give life to the body. In the beginning, the monster was kind and helpful. But when he was hated everywhere by his creator and people,he felt very painful. He became hated everything and wanted to destroy everything. He killed Frankenstein's son, William and fiancee ,Elizabeth.Frankenstein filled with anger chase him with his creation demonic monster, finally, Frankenstein and the monster in the fight they died.

It is a very terrible story. Frankenstein created a monster, in this society in which the subject of ridicule, discrimination, so that he eventually became hate everything, trying to ruin everything. This is not just to create a simple person, but to create a Satan, a devil. If people all show kindness for the monster, it would be a good man. There would not be many people losing their lives. In the story, the monster asked Frankenstein to make a second creature. But

at last, frankenstein did not.I think he is right. If he does that, there may be more people to be dead.Maybe in the future, there will be no person on Earth. It is awful.

From the story,I learned that everyone should have sympathy. Do not only care about appearance.

A Book Review

Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus: Mary Shelley.1823.Signet Classics.223pp.paperpack.

I chose to read this book because it is generally considered as the first science fiction novel. And at meanwhile it consists of both Gothic element and romantic element. Besides, we have learnt the main theme in our English literature class, so I thought this one could be easy for me to understand. But unfortunately, I was wrong. The language of it is difficult and full of obscurity. Sometimes I had to read the same sentence or paragraph repeatedly. However, the story is touching, and it makes me think a lot.

It was written in epistolary form, and in the first person point of view, so narrators’ thoughts are directly presented for us. And at the beginning of the story, a young explorer and his cast in the boat were stuck by icebergs. He was desperate and lonely. At that time, he saved a man form the freezing water, after that he seemed to find a mate could talk with. Frankenstein, a brilliant scientist, was also desperate and alone. When I read about this part, I did not understand why this young explorer, Robert Walton, showed such appreciation and kindness to a sorehead stranger. But when I almost finished it, I was impressed by how Frankenstein encouraged Walton and his cast while he was nearly to die. “Do you not call this a glorious expedition?” Frankenstien asked Walton, “Not because the way was smooth and placid as a southern sea, but because it was full of danger and terror.” I was impressed by Frankenstein’s firmness. And also, I admired the author wrote this masterpiece when she was only eighteen. Actually, I think Mary Shelley created Victor Frankenstein as a charming and intelligent gentleman. Therefore, he had his cousin fall for him, and made people around him liked him. It is romantic and at same time, very cruel to describe a brilliant man and how his life was destroyed little by little.

And I wonder who the perpetrator of this tragedy is. Is the hideous monster or Frankenstein himself?

The monster, at the beginning, just liked a child, an ugly child who was despised by his own parent. He was abandoned. But he did not know what he should do. He did

not know about love and hatred, but he could feel the beauty of nature. And there was fire; just liked what the title told us “modern Prometheus”. Fire can be seen as the simple of enlightenment. The monster was intelligent, even more superior to his creator. I was surprised that the monster could learn so fast. He learnt a language just through listening secretly to the conversations of that French family. And I have learnt English more than ten years, but still cannot use it properly. He was strong, too. It makes me think about Superman or something like that. It seems common for human being to imagine and even create a kind of “super human”, which may be not the main propose of Victor Frankenstein. But he also wanted to make a beautiful creature. Perhaps, it is a part of our nature to chase something better than ourselves.

Then I think of death, and the fear of death. We all shall die one day. And so did our ancestors. But we all hold the will against death. In Frankenstein’s case, he went through several deaths of his family--- Elizabeth’s parents and his mother. He wanted to bring the death back to life. He achieved his goal, but he was frightened by his creature. I do not want to make more useless remark about why he was afraid of the monster. I am aware of that after reading Paradise Lost, the monster began to think about his identity and destination. It was occasionally occurred to me that if it is because of that, this monster began to think like human, behave like human and finally, demand to be treated like human. And then, he only found that he was seen as a monster. Because of his demand was not satisfied, he started to hate people, to curse his creator, and committee crime of murder. And I think this plot is such similar to the first crime of murder in human history, according to the Bible. Cain killed his brother, also because his need could not be contented by God, to be treated equal with his brother.

I consider this book as a brief parody of the origin of human being, for it is full of introspection and self-exploration about human nature.

1

„Captain! Something is moving on the ice.Look over there!‟

The sailor stood at the top of the mast, high above the

Captain. His hand pointed away from the ship, across the miles of ice that covered the sea.

The Captain looked to the north, where the sailor was

pointing. He saw something coming fast towards the ship across the ice. He put his telescope to his eye, and through it he could see the shapes of ten dogs pulling a sledge over the ice. He could also see the driver of the sledge—a huge figure, much bigger than a man.

The sledge came nearer and nearer to the sea. Soon it was only a quarter of a mile from the ship.No one needed a telescope now to see the huge figure of the driver.

Suddenly the sledge went behind a mountain of ice and

disappeared. At that moment another sledge appeared. It, too,was moving fast, and was clearly chasing the first sledge. This driver was a smaller figure, more like an ordinary man.Faster and faster the dogs ran;then the second sledge also disappeared behind the mountain of ice. Two hours passed. The sledges did not appear again. Nothing moved on the ice. Soon night came, and in the night there was a storm. In the morning, the sailors saw that great pieces of ice were floating round the ship.Suddenly the sailor on the mast shouted again: „Captain, I can see a man on the ice.‟

The sailor was pointing to a piece of ice that was floating near the ship. A man was sitting on the ice, and near him was a broken

sledge. The man was nearly dead from cold and could not walk. The sailors carried him carefully onto the ship, and took him to the Captain, who said:

„Welcome to my ship.I am the Captain and my name is Robert Walton.‟

„Thank you, Captain Walton,‟ the man said.„My name is Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein.‟

Then he fainted and said no more.

Two days passed before the man was strong enough to talk and then the Captain asked him to tell his story.

„I am trying to catch someone,‟ said Frankenstein.„That is why I have come so far north on the ice.‟

„We saw you following someone,‟ the Captain said.„He was huge, much bigger than a man. We saw his sledge just in front of you on the night before the storm.‟

„I am pleased you all saw that huge figure,‟ Frankenstein said.„Perhaps that will help you to believe my story.‟

During the days, while the Captain worked on the ship,

Frankenstein wrote down his story, and each evening he read what he

had written to the Captain.

Here is Victor Frankenstein's story.

2

I was born in Switzerland, in the town of Geneva. My parents loved each other very much, and I learnt from the example of their love.I learnt that to love and to be patient are the most important things in the world.

My mother hoped to have a daughter after I was born, but for five years I was the only child. And then my mother found a sister for

me.She was helping a family in which there were five children. They were very poor, and the children were thin and hungry. One of the children was a little girl, with golden hair and blue eyes Her name was Elizabeth. My mother took the little girl into our family, and Elizabeth became the daughter that my mother had always wanted. As I grew older, my love for Elizabeth became stronger all the time.

Later my mother had two other sons, Ernest and William.A young

woman called Justine came to live in the house to help my mother with the children. We loved her as much as she loved us.

The years passed happily, and we had everything that we

needed. At school I met another very fine person. His name was Henry Clerval, and he was very clever. My family also liked him very much, so he was a welcome visitor to our house.

I studied very hard at school.I wanted to know the secrets of life, and, most of all, I wanted to know how to make living things.I read all the books that I could find. One day,some-thing happened that added a new idea to the ideas that I al-ready had.I was fifteen at the time, and we were on holiday in the mountains. There was a wild storm, and with it came the most frightening thunder and lightning that I had ever seen in my life. About twenty metres in front of our house was a great tree.Suddenly a huge fork of lightning hit the tree. After a few seconds, there was nothing left of it except a black piece of wood two metres high. The lightning had destroyed it.

I saw how strong electricity was. I began to read all the books that I could find about electricity and its terrible power.

Everyone has two sides. One side is good, while another is evil. If a person is hated, discriminated against and persecuted for a long time, he will become evil and do something wrong, or even worse. For example, after being treated so badly and unfairly, the monster who is told in the novel kills many people for revenge. From what have been mentioned above, I have an opinion that we’d better do what we can to be kind to other people, which is beneficial to all of us.
