Text 10

It was raining heavily as I was walking up the hill towards the station at six o’clock on a Saturday morning. At this early hour there wasn’t much traffic and there weren’t many people in sight.Just as I was crossing the road near the top of the hill a car came around the corner. It was traveling very fast and the driver was obviously having difficulty in controlling it.Suddenly it went off the road, hit a lamp post and turned over.

At once I ran to the car to help the driver, but he was seriously hurt.A young woman hurried into the station and called the First Aid Center while I took care of the driver.A number of other people gathered round the car,but there wasn’t a great deal we could do.A policeman arrived a few minutes later and asked me a lot of questions about the accident.Shortly afterwards a bus arrived at high speed and took him away to hospital.

Later,I went to the hospital to see the driver.I was told that his operation had been successful and that he was getting better rapidly.

First, let me introduce myself.I’m Dr. Mott, from the school clinic.I’ve been asked to speak to you this afternoon on running, and most of what I’m going to say,I guess, isn’t new.I’m a runner myself.Got into it in middle school.Been running for 27 years.Every morning I get up and go out before breakfast. It helps me a lot.

Now is running better than any other sport?Exercise seems to be the key to better health. And it should be constant and regulated, that is,it should be controlled.

By constant I mean you don’t study like crazy Monday through Friday and then run one hour Saturday and another Sunday.Do a little each day,and a ten-minute walk is plenty to start out with if you’re out of practice.

You should check with your doctor before you begin any hard exercises, especially if you’re over

30.And it is no good overdoing it.If you’ve been running a mile a day and want to enter a six-mile race next spring, work up to it.Increase your distance by an eighth of a mile, for instance, twice a week. And if you stop your training for more than a couple of days, don’t try to pick it up where you left off.Ease back into it.

Text 10

During the Second World War it was very difficult for ordinary people to travel by plane, because the seats were needed for important government and army people. Mr.Brown worked for the government during the war. He acted as an ordinary cook but in fact he was doing very secret work,so no one was allowed to know how important he was except a few very top people. One day,Mr.Brown had to fly to London to make a report to some important people in the government and army. So he had an order for a seat in a plane. But when Mr. Brown was about go get on the plane,an important army officer came to the airport at the last minute, and Mr. Brown’s seat was given to the officer,so Mr. Brown had to wait for the next plane which was to fly to London two days later. It was not until he reached London that the high ranking officer discovered that the man whose seat he had taken was the very one whose report he had flown to the city to listen to.
