Dear sir,

I’m LiHua from Guang Ming Middle School. I’m writing to tell you what we high school students think of having the gap year.

Above all, most of us students consider it a brilliant idea to have a gap year before we finally go to our dream college. Some students will travel around our country or even the whole world to relieve the tension and pressure caused by senior academic study. Others prefer to take some jobs so that they are able to make some money and be economically independent. Still others choose to read more books about their majors they are going to study in university. By doing what is mentioned above, we students will not only enrich our life and social experience but also temper our sense of independence. In one word, we can’t wait to spend the gap year in our own way.

Yours truly, Li Hua

Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on July 21st, 1899. Influenced by his father,

he enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting at his early age. In 1917, after graduation from high school, Hemingway began his writing career with The Kansas City Star. And then, after being rejected for army service in World War I because of poor vision, he volunteered to serve as a driver for an American ambulance unit in France. In 1918, he transferred to duty on the Italian

front, where he was seriously wounded in an explosion. After his recovery, he returned home. He worked for The Toronto star, covered the Greco-Turkish war as a foreign reporter, and then returned to Paris, which was a city full of intellectual life, creativity, and genius after the war. In Paris, where he accomplished a revolution in literary style and language, his first book, Three Stories and Ten Poems, appeared in 1923, and was followed by a short story collection In Our Time, which marked his entry to American literature in 1925.

Hemingway‘s status as a remarkable writer of his time was confirmed with the publication of

A Farewell to Arms in 1929. The novel represented a farewell both for war and for love. In 1937, he became a foreign reporter covering the Spanish Civil war. Three years later, he published For Whom the Bell Tolls. Set in Spain during the Civil war, the novel restated his view of love found and lost and described the tough spirit of the common people. In 1912, the same judgment was reflected in his portrait of fisherman, Santiago, with an in defeat, in The Old Man and the Sea, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. With one of the most important influences on the development of the American short story and novel, Hemingway has seized the imagination of the American public like no other twentieth-century author. He died by suicide, in Ketchum, Idaho, in 1961.

The trouble with school is that you can‘t choose the people you get to see every day. If

you‘re unlucky enough to be stuck with classmates who don‘t really ―get‖ you, you‘ve just got to try to make the best of it.

But that doesn‘t mean you need to ―fit in‖, or at least in the way that people think. If you try

to transform yourself into a clone of everyone else, it won‘t help you make friends. It‘ll just make you feel like a fake.

You also shouldn‘t shut down or refuse to be friends with everyone who doesn‘t like you. If

you do that, you‘ll just make yourself miserable. Instead, you‘ve got to work on being comfortable and confident with whom you are while ignoring all the haters. Keep on speaking up, asking questions and getting to know people better. If you send out positive energy, then people will

generally send some back to you. A couple of them will stay the same, and you‘re allowed to forget about them.

If you feel like you‘re doing all that but still not getting anywhere, then don‘t give up. Just expand your circle. Get a part-time job at a cool-looking place, join an after-school art class or youth group—do whatever it takes to find a couple of like-minded people to connect with. Even if you don‘t find anyone right away, you‘ll still be getting some more social experiences under your belt, and that‘s always a good thing.

A fun book called Uncool, by Erin Elisabeth Conley, has some tips for folks like you who want to stay positive at school while being true to your personality:

·Throw caution to the wind.【2016哈三中四模英语】

·Don‘t tolerate others‘ mistakes.

·Have patience with people who are different from you.

·Don‘t change just because someone else thinks you should.

·Know that even though you may be a misfit, there‘s always some place where you will be welcomed in the world.

25. According to the author, what should you do if you meet people who don‘t appreciate you?

A. Just give up.

B. Ask someone else for help.

C. Show positive attitude toward them.

D. Try your best to fit in with them.

26. The author agrees that you should take part in more activities in order to __________.

A. get more chances of making friends

B. lay a better foundation for your future jobs

C. transform yourself into a clone.

D. make you feel like a fake.

27. In the book Uncool, Erin Elisabeth Conley thinks you should _________.

A. always be kind to your friends B. keep your own personality

C. tolerate others‘ mistakes D. help improve characters of others

28. This passage was written mainly for _______.

A. doctors B. scientists C. students D. teachers

Not many things in life can be more irritating: you are having a conversation with friends, but they check their phones and begin replying to texts or checking their emails. The Guardian (卫报) described the scene of a friend‘s face buried in a screen as ―a distinct 21st-century problem‖. A new word has been created to describe this --- phubbing. It is the act of looking at your mobile phone instead of paying attention to others during a social interaction. Like pointing at one‘s nose, phubbing is widely considered rude behavior. People everywhere are beginning to lose patience with the phenomenon.

A ―Stop Phubbing‖ campaign group has been started in Australia and at least five others have sprung up in its wake as anger about the lack of manners grows. The campaign‘s creator, Alex Haigh, 23, from Melbourne, said, ―A group of friends and I were chatting when someone raised how annoying being ignored by people on mobiles was.‖ He has created a website where companies can download posters to discourage phubbing.

Text 10

Good morning everyone. I‟m Professor Garson and I will be your advisor this term.

This is your first day and I want to explain some of the subjects. First, everyone must take three required subjects: maths, English and history. The only one which is arranged for you is English. You‟re to be tested and will be placed at your level in that subject. The only requirement for maths is that you‟ve completed the previous level. History is open at all levels since study is usually divided into the different historical time periods. In history, you may choose from almost any culture and time. Unless you are studying at a specific cultural and time period, you‟re free to choose the history course that you‟re most interested in. As long as there‟s place in the class, of course. Your optional courses are the subjects you can choose. They are courses that are not required and may be in fields such as science, art, sports, computer science, business — almost anything that you can think of. I can help you make a plan that will include your required and optional courses. Your plan must have the necessary number of units. Sometimes there may be no room in a course, but we can try to schedule the course for another term.

OK. That‟s all for you. You may come to me if you have any questions after my speech.

(CNN) — An ultra-marathoner trying to “run” from Florida to

Bermuda in a human-powered inflatable (充气的) bubble was rescued

Saturday morning, after he signaled for help, the Coast Guard said.

Reza Baluchi, according to his website, has set a goal of running

across more than 190 recognized nations to encourage world peace.

The Coast Guard first encountered Baluchi on Wednesday after receiving a report about a

man in a bubble off the coast of Miami, disoriented and asking for directions to Bermuda, a

Coast Guard press release said. It was not clear when he started his adventure.

A Coast Guard ship found Baluchi. Officials described the craft as a “hydro pod bubble”

and a man in a 2013 YouTube video called a Baluchi bubble “a big hamster wheel.” It moved

along the ground as Baluchi ran inside.

In the press release, the Coast Guard said Baluchi had protein bars, bottled water, a GPS and a satellite phone. The Coast Guard conveyed the voyage’s dangers and asked Baluchi to quit his journey because he didn’t have enough supplies. But he wouldn’t leave his bubble, officials said.

The Coast Guard monitored his progress and on Saturday morning exhausted Baluchi activated(激活) his personal locating beacon(灯塔), the Coast Guard said.

A Coast Guard airplane and a helicopter, along with the boat Maersk Montana, were sent to rescue Baluchi 70 nautical miles east of St. Augustine, the Coast Guard said.

He was exhausted and taken to the Coast Guard air station, where his medical condition was evaluated. There were no reported injuries, the Coast Guard said.

“Part of his effort was to make world peace but he got caught up in the Gulf Stream,” said Coast Guard public affairs specialist Mark Barney. “The chances of muscling out of the Gulf Stream were pretty low.”

Baluchi could not be reached for comment, but a video posted on Baluchi’s Facebook page described his plans to travel in the bubble across the Caribbean, as well as his other athletic exploits.

The CNN.com story quoted Baluchi saying he’d run across the United States twice and around its border once. He said he fled Iran to escape persecution (迫害). Now he is an American citizen.

21. What happened to Baluchi when he first encountered the Coast Guard?

A. He was confused about which direction he should go.

B. His bubble was broken.

C. He was exhausted by the adventure.

D. He activated his locating beacon.

22. From the passage, we can know that __________.

A. The Coast Guard advised Baluchi to quit the journey because the weather was terrible.

B. Baluchi ended his journey since he hadn’t enough supplies.

C. In the press release, Baluchi described his plan to cross the Caribbean in the bubble.

D. Although Baluchi was exhausted, there were no reported injuries after his being rescued.

23. Which of the following words can best describe Reza Baluchi’s personality?

A. Optimistic B. Adventurous C. Hardworking D. Devoted.

B

Farmers use different kinds of soil conservation methods to protect their land from damage by farming and the forces of nature. One important form of soil conservation is the use of windbreaks.

Windbreaks are barriers formed by trees and other plants with many leaves. Farmers plant them in lines around their fields. Windbreaks stop the wind from blowing soil away. They also

keep the wind from destroying or damaging crops. They are very important for growing grains, such as wheat.

There have been studies done on windbreaks in parts of West Africa. It is found that grain harvests can be 20% higher in fields protected by windbreaks compared to fields without such protection.

However, windbreaks seem to work best when they allow a little wind to pass through. If the wall of trees and plants stops wind completely, then violent air movements will take place close to the ground. These movements will lift soil into the air where it will be blown away. For this reason, a windbreak is best if it has only 60% to 80% of the trees and plants needed to form a solid line.

An easy role to remember is that windbreaks can protect areas up to ten times the height of the tallest trees in the windbreaks. There should be at least two lines in each windbreak. One line should be large trees. The second line, right next to it, can be shorter trees and other plants with leaves. Locally grown trees and plants are best for windbreaks.

Windbreaks can protect land and crops from the wind. They can also provide wood products. These include wood for fuel and longer pieces for making fences.

24. If the wind is stopped completely, what will happen?

A. Some soil will be blown away. B. The wind will become stronger.

C. Some trees will be pulled up. D. All the wind will be kept out.

25. If the trees in the windbreak are 20 meters high, the area being protected is ___________.

A. 20 meters B. 200 meters C. 2,000 meters D. 2 meters

26. We can learn from the text that ____________.

A. windbreaks are popular in Africa

B. only trees can be planted in a windbreak

C. windbreaks help to produce better harvests

D. the best way to protect soil is building windbreaks

27. The author develops the passage by the following means EXCEPT ____________.

A. making comparison B. listing statistics

C. giving examples D. following time order

C

Auckland is New Zealand’s largest urban area with a population of just over a million people. It is not, however, the capital, although it was at one time, until the capital moved to Wellington. Auckland is the center of commerce and industry, and is perhaps the most energetic, prosperous and multicultural city in New Zealand.

The city’s landscape is dominated by volcanic hills, the twin harbors, bays, beaches and islands. Its nickname “the city of sails” is very suitable. Auckland has more boats for each person than anywhere else in the world.

Nowadays, going abroad for further study is gaining popularity among Chinese high school graduates.

Actually, there are advantages for such a choice. Living and studying abroad offers high school graduates a different perspective of the world. On a university campus, they are likely to meet people of the same age group from various countries and are exposed to diverse ideas and values.

However, going abroad for further study at such a young age does have its problems. For instance, studying abroad alone, with no one to turn to, they may feel lonely and helpless, when meeting difficulty. Besides, tuition fees for overseas students are relatively high and perhaps beyond the reach of most families financially.

It is my view that although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful, the payoff is worthwhile. In addition to knowledge, overseas students can gain precious experience, which is beneficial to the growth of young people.
