Most people agree that fencing (击剑) is one sport in which a person must be at least 30 years old before he learns all he needs to know about the sport. But Clark

Summers of the University of Detroit has shown that this doesn’t always have to be true.

Clark is a different kind of fencer in a lot of ways. He is American, while most fencers are from the countries of Europe. He is black while most fencers in the past have been white. And he is only 22 years old.

Many people think that Clark is the most promising fencer in this country today. Although he is young, he has been able to master the necessary skills. Already he has won a number of fencing contests (竞赛) against older fencers. He is almost certain to become a member of the U. S. Olympic (奥林匹克) fencing team!

”There is no real danger in fencing, today,” Clark says. “But I never forget that fencing was not always a sport. In the old days, People fenced to settle a quarrel. Each match was a matter of life and death. If that came true in the matches I play in today,

every touch against me would mean that I had been wounded or killed. So I try to play as if l were fencing for my life. I don’t like the idea of being killed!”

56 Most people think that ___________ can do fencing.

A. kids B. teenagers C. adults D. senior citizens

57. Clark Summer is NOT probably from _______________.

A. Detroit B. Boston C. Seattle D. Manchester

58. Which of the following sentences is TRUE?

A. All the fencers are from the countries of Europe.

B. Clark has won few fencing contests against older fencers.

C. In the past, people fenced when they disagreed with each other.

D. Today, many fencers will get wounded or killed.

59. We can judge from the passage that Clark works very hard because

____________.

A. there is no real danger in fencing B. he doesn’t like the idea to be killed

C. he wants to settle all the quarrels D. each match is a matter of life and death

B

Reading is not the only way to gain knowledge of the work in the past. There is another large reservoir (知识库) which may be called experience, and the college student will find that every craftsman (工匠) has something he can teach and will generally teach gladly to any college student who does not look down upon them . The information from them differs from (不同于) that in textbooks and papers chiefly in that its theoretical (理论的) part -- the explanations of why things happen -- is frequently quite fantastic (神奇的) . But the demonstration (示范) and report of what happens , and how it happens are correct even if the reports are in completely unscientific terms (术语). Presently the college

student will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to reject. One important thing for a college student to remember is that if Aristotle could talk to the fisherman, so can he.

Soon there’s an even more frightening problem--why can’t the Homework Machine be turned off?

Told in different voices(as all the children make statements to the Grand Canyon Police),the story develops in an interesting fashion.Gutman is a gifted writer who has written dozens of children’s books, each with a funny and impressing tale that should be equally liked by boys and girls.

A

In the 1900's, American townspeople usually washed and brushed their teeth and combed their hair in the kitchen. Or they kept a water pitcher (大水罐)and a wash basin in their rooms and took care of these things there.

The bathtub was a wash tub(澡盆)filled with water from the stove. If you were small enough you could sit down by drawing your knees to your chest. Otherwise, you washed yourself standing up. Often all the women and girls in the family bathed together. Then the men and boys did. In most families this was Saturday night because Sundays they went to church.

A small number of families did have running water. But that depended on whether there was a water system where they lived and on whether they could afford the plumbing(水管设施). Some people had bathtubs in their homes as early as 1895. But many others did not have their first bath in a bathtub until 1910 or later when they were fifteen or sixteen years old. 56In the first paragraph, "took care of" means "".

CARIFF, Wales poets, singers and musicians from across the globe gathered Wales to celebrate the tradition(传统)of storytelling. "It might seem strange that people still want to listen to instead of watching television, but this is an unusual art form whose time has come again, "said David Amibrose, director of Beyond the Border, an international storytelling festival(节)in Wales.

"Some of the tales, like those of the Inuit from Canada, are thousands years old. So our storytellers have come from distant lands to connect us with the distance of time. " he said early this month. Two Inuit women, both in their mid 60s, are among the few remaining who can do Kntadjait, or throat singing, which has few words and much sound.

Their art is governed by the cold of their surroundings, forcing them to say little but listen attentively. Ambrose started the festival in 1993, after several years of working with those reviving (coming back into use or existence)storytelling in Wales.

"It came out of a group of people who wanted to reconnect with traditions and as all the Welsh are storytellers, it was in good hands here." Ambrose said.

Greek soldiers sent messages by turning their shields(盾)toward the sun. The flashes reflected light could be seen several miles away. The enemy did not know what the flashes meant, but other Greek soldiers could understand the messages.

Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to send, the soldiers shouted it from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and enough soldiers with loud voices, important news could be sent quickly over distance.

In Africa, people learned to send messages by beating on a series of large drums(鼓). Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at great speed for hundreds of miles.

In the eighteenth century, a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to various positions representing different letters of the alphabet. It was like spelling out words with flags and arms. Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. However, not until the telephone was invented in America in the nineteenth century could people send speech sounds over a great distance in just a few seconds.

65. According to this passage, the Roman way of communication depended very much upon .

[A] fine weather [B] high tower

[C] the spelling system [D] arm movements

Because we can feel that things are heavy, we think of weight as being a fixed quality in an object, but it is not really fixed at all. If you could take a one pound packet of butter 4, 000 miles out from the earth, it would weigh only a quarter of a pound. Why would things weigh only a quarter as much as they do at the surface of the earth if we took them 4 000 miles out into space? The reason is this: All objects have a natural attraction for all other objects; this is called gravitational attraction, but this power of attraction between two objects gets weaker as they get farther apart. When the butter was at the surface of the earth, it was 4 000 miles from the centre (in other words the radius(半径)of the earth is 4 000 miles). When we took the butter 4 000 miles out, it was 8 000 miles from the centre, which is twice the distance.

If you double the distance between two objects, their gravitational attraction decreases two times two. If you treble(翻三倍)the distance, it gets nine times weaker(three times three). If you take it four times as far away, it gets sixteen times weaker (four times four)and so on.

69. The best title for this passage is.

[A] The Earth Weight [B] Weight in Space

[C] Changing Weight on the Earth [D] Weight on and off the Earth

70. We can feel things are heavy because.

[A] weight is a fixed quality in an object

[B] they are far away from the centre of the earth

[C] of the earth's strong attraction for them

[D] they are not taken away from the surface of the earth

71. If the distance between two objects is shortened by half, their gravitational attraction will. [A] double [B] become four times stronger

[C] be the same [D] get four times weaker

72. If an object weighed one pound 8 000 miles above the earth, it would weigh on the surface of the earth.

[A] 6 pounds [B] 4 pounds [C] 9 pounds [D] 1/9 pound

At first, I thought it was just useless e-mails. It was the end of the weekend and I hadn't checked my e-mails since late Friday afternoon. There was a long list of messages. Some I removed without reading. Others were from friends-I saved those to read later when I had more time.

One stood out from the rest for two reasons. The first was the name, Maher Nawaf, which I didn't recognize. The second was the subject line: "pleas papers. " Clearly, the e-mail was仕om someone who did not have a complete mastery of the English language. The message was from an Iraqi, a university research scientist in Mosul who wanted permission to reprint a research paper I had written. As a scientist, I' m used to getting these kinds of requests; it' s part of the give and take among researchers that I especially like. I wrote back the next day, asking for more information about the type of work he was doing. I also wished him and his family best for their safety and well-being during this dangerous time in his land.

A couple of days later, his reply appeared in my inbox. It read, in part: "hi dear Dr. I'm very happy to hear good news from you and your help, also I' d like to thank you for your feelings towards me and my family . .. thank you very much for help I want to tell you that I' m ready to help you in mosul university/iraq if you need that. "

Maher also explained in his broken English that he was interested in a paper I' d written on the use of lactobacillus acidophilus (a healthy product that can be found in yogurt (酸奶) and other foods). It was his hope that he could use my findings to help find a treatment for gastrointestinal (消化系统的) illness. He signed off:" warmest regards to you and lovely family. "

Despite his difficulty with the language, he had painted a picture for me由at was far more than a simple request for information. The humanity displayed (流露出的) in his message made me want to both smile and cry.

36.Why did the e-mail from an Iraqi catch the author' s attention?

Businesses put lots of time and money into new plans, programs and excellent employees with the hope things will change. Yet, at the end of the effort, not much changes. What happens

In most cases, those new plans, programs and employees enter a company with an existing culture (文化). And plans, programs and new employees have a way of conforming to(顺应)the existing culture. The culture of your business is the result of a particular mindset , or a particular way of thinking and the general feelings about certain things. Most often, it is the mindset of the founder or people managing the business. The founder has gotten to where he is because of his skill sets, knowledge base and personal beliefs, which unfortunately all come with inherent (固有的)limits. Why Skills, knowledge and beliefs come from what he or she already knows or has experienced. In other words, it comes from the past. We ( people) try to make the past fit the future. Just because something worked in the past, doesn't mean it is suitable for the future. As the saying goes, if you do and think what you have always done and thought, you will have what you have always had.

Therefore, lasting changes have to start with the way people think. To make changes in the way you think, you will be required ta set goals beyond your basic abilities and continuously think them through. It is a way to train yourself and people to get out of the comfort zone where you feel happy with your knowledge and skills.

40.Which question does the author try to answer?

A.What past experience is useful for businesses

B.How much time is needed for making plans

C.How can changes be made in businesses

D.What kinds of employees are the best

B.The progres

C.The new employee

W: Oh, Sunday's a bit of a problem. Some of my friends are coming for a dinner at my place. What about Saturday?

W: We do, but the museum will close in twenty minutes. We stop selling tickets at 3:30. It's 3:40 now.

M: Could you possibly let me go in for a quick look? I can pay the full price.

W: Well, it's great, but I’ve got homework to do.

M: Come on! It doesn’t matter that you go out for one afternoon.

W: Oh, I really can't. Although I finished my book report, the upcoming mid-term exam really makes me nervous. I don’t think I’d enjoy an outing now. Sorry I can’t drive you.

M: Oh, don’t worry. I can find someone else. Good luck with your exam!

W: Thanks. See you! M: Bye!

Text 8

M: Hello. I'd like this guidebook, please. How much is it?

W: All things are free here.

M: Oh, thanks. I'll stay in the city for one week. Could you tell me what places I should visit? W: Well, there are a lot. Are you interested in islands, such as Lantau?

M: Islands?

W: Yes. There are a lot of interesting things you can see — old villages and churches. And the scenery is beautiful. Take this booklet. It tells you more.

M: Thank you very much. That’s a great suggestion.

W: You are welcome.

Text 9

W: Dr. Green, congratulations on the success of your new book! We learned that it has been translated into 30 languages — English, of course, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, and so on.

M: Thanks, Helen.

W: Well, could you tell us what this popular book is about?

M: It’s called In Praise of Slow. It's about how the world got stuck in fast-forward, and how more and more people everywhere are slowing down. In other words, it’s about the rise of the

Slow Movement.

W: What is the Slow Movement?

M: It is a revolution against the idea that faster is always better. When I say “slow”, I don’t mean doing everything slowly. It’s about doing everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible. It’s about quality in everything we do.

W: When and where was this “slow” idea born?

M: It was born in the early 1990s in Italy. It began as the Slow Food Movement, which centered on food. More recently, “slow” has become popular worldwide.

W: Have we reached the point of trying to speed up something that cannot really be sped up? M: Of course. The Internet connects us in wonderful ways, but it also leads us into trying to hurry up relationships. So you find people online saying they have more than 4,000 friends. The very idea of friendship is not considered important. And we may be losing the ability to make friends. In Britain, a study found that in the past ten years, the number of children who say they have no best friend rose from under one in eight to nearly one in five!

Text10

Good morning, everyone. I'm pleased to be here to give a talk. We’re two brothers from Canada, and we’ve been living in Thailand for eight years. We noticed that most English lessons here in schools focus only on reading and writing, so a lot of people can’t understand and speak well in English. And we’d like to do something about it. Our idea is simple: we want to teach people how to understand and speak English like a native speaker. Different from broadcast English programs, we design special fun English programs based on the computer and use them to teach words and expressions we use in real life. We talk in a casual style on a number of interesting topics, and we share personal stories from our real lives. Now, we have over 200 units on our website. We make a new unit every week that you can listen to on your computer anytime you want. Our materials are from English movies, TV shows, and real-life conversations. We hope people will use the materials to practice every day. We are sure that your English will improve a lot. (931 words)

第三部分:阅读理解

A Stage plays, at first, seem a lot like films. Both use actors and dialogue and scenery. But if you try to make a film by setting up a camera in front of the stage, you will find it won’t work. A film made in this way will leave the audience cold. And even worse you’ll b3e wasting a powerful tool --- the camera.

A stage is actually a box. One side of the box has been removed so the audience can see what’s going on inside. The actors remain at a fixed audience. In the film, however, the camera can bring the audience up close and fix their attention on small but important things: a frightened look, a whisper, a trembling of hands.

The camera offers the film maker freedom allowing him to move easily across barriers(界限) of time and space. He can show his action in real cities and on real farms. He can also use the camera to change the scene dozens of times in one film. No expert of the stage can do this.

36. The main idea of the text is that ________ .

A. stage plays and films are two different kinds of art

B. it is always disappointing to turn play into films

C. films have certain advantages(长处) over stage plays

D. the camera has made film making easy and possible

37. What is wrong with making a film by setting up a camera before the stage ?

A. Fewer and fewer people will go to the theatre.

B. The audience cannot see what is going on on the stage.

C. The scene cannot be changed from time to time.

D. The powerful camera cannot be made good use of.

38. Which of the following can show that the camera is a powerful tool ?

A. It can move easily. B. It can make small things look larger.

C. It can show things in the future. D. It can give us a scene of realism.

39. In what way are plays different from film ?

A. Films often use real scenery while plays don’t.

B. Films can show the past while plays can’t.

C. Films change scenes while plays don’t.

D. Film audience can move while play audience can’t.

40. A suitable title for this text is _______.

A. Stage Plays and Film B. The Powerful Camera
