What makes the world become smaller and smaller? Some inventions. It began in the 11th century, but it has developed greatly in the last century. Let’s take a look at the five top inventions. Movable Type(活字印刷): By using Movable Type, books could be printed cheaply and easily. Bi Sheng invented Movable Type in China in the 11th century.

Telephone: The inventor Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call in 1876. “Mr. Watson, come here. I want you.” he said to his assistant over the phone line. And with those famous words, the world was about to get much smaller.

Airplane: The Wright brothers made the first powered flight in 1903. Air travel has made the faraway places suddenly become a lot closer.

Satellites(卫星): The Soviet Union sent up the world’s first satellite in 1957. This began the Space Age. Satellites have helped scientists study the earth. Much of our knowledge of the world has come from the information recorded by satellites.

Internet: When the Internet was created in 1969, only a few people knew about it. But more than 650 million people in the world use it now. The Internet has made information about anything easy to get.

The Secret of Success

1. Your best chance of success is by doing what you really want to do. Ask

yourself, “If money were not so important, what kind of work would I do for free?” Then just do what you like to do.

2 Think about what you are going to do. You have to start somewhere and it may be quite

a real beginning. Whether you are beginning in business or you’re dreaming to be a star, you have to start at the bottom.

3. Great ambition(目标)is necessary. An English student called Richard Brason opened a student magazine when he was only 16 years old. But he didn’t stop there. He also opened a record business with many shops, and now his company has planes, trains and cars. 4. The only people who succeed without hard work are lottery(彩票)winners. You need a “can do” attitude(态度)and you must work step by step, which will help you get what you really want. You are on the right way to win the success.

5. If you always say someone is successful, it doesn’t mean anything to you. Learn from those who have already succeeded in something, especially where they do the same as you want to do.

A. Think big B. Start small C. Follow the leaders

D. Find the work you love E. Be prepared to work hard

阅读上面的5段语言材料,请找出与它们相对应的标题,并将其标号填入下列方框中。

Thumbs Down to Texting 屈指发短信

Do you have a mobile phone? Do you send text messages to your friends and family? Text messaging or “texting”, is becoming very popular. But, scientists have discovered that texting can give us problems with our hands. Be careful! Too much texting can cause swelling(肿胀)in our thumbs(拇指). Our thumbs were not made for pushing small buttons(按钮), over and over. Scientists call his problem RSI(重复性紧张劳损). We spoke to a doctor called Harriet Wilson, who treats many sick people with RSI. She says we need to see how much time we are spending in typing text messages. If we are spending more than 10-15 minutes at once, we could have problems in the future.

As mobile phones develop, they are getting smaller with buttons closer together. Texting with a smaller phone is worse than using a larger phone with bigger buttons. Using a computer keyboard and playing video games can cause the same problem. So more and more people could find themselves with RSI. Among them, most are university students and teenagers, as they do not know the risks of spending so much time using computers, video games and mobile phones. If we don’t do something about this, too many young people could grow up in terrible pain.

1. What is becoming very popular now?

2. Does the word “once” mean “one time” in the second passage?

3. What kind of people are easier to have the problem of RSI?

4. What can also cause RSI except texting?

5. Which is easier to cause the problem of RSI, using smaller mobile phones or larger ones?

Most people can think of a sport they would love to see in Olympics. But they often don’t realize how hard it is to add a sport to the Olympics. A sport needs to be well-organized and popular before the International Olympic Committee(IOC) will consider it. An international federation must govern(控制)the sport by making rules and making sure athletes meet Olympic standards(标准). What’s more, men from at least 75 counties and women from at least 40 must play the sport.

However, even meeting those conditions isn’t enough. The IOC always tries to keep the number of athletes at about 40,000 for each Olympic. Since most modern Olympics already included so many athletes, introducing a new sport often means cutting other events. The country that hosts the games is allowed to suggest what new sports should be included. While new sports are added to the Olympics, most of them will simply become events in another sports meeting. In Beijing, open water swimming will become part of swimming, while women’s steeplechase(障碍赛)will be added to athletics.

根据文章内容,完成下列任务:

1. How can a sport be added to the Olympics? 从短文中找出三个条件。 ⑴ ⑵ ⑶ 2. 根据文章内容,选择适当的词语完成句子。

and will become new sports in the 2008 Olympics. (五)

In today’s world many people seem to be hungry for money. Money does have its most useful effect on the poor. But even if a person has already got plenty of money, .

If money were everything, all millionaires would have real love, true friendship, good health and a long life. However, this is not always correct.

Since the beginning of time no three words have ever invited more pleasure than “I love you”. But can love be bought? I’m afraid not. Love means to give, not to take. To every person, health and a long life are probably the best things. Well, can health and a long life be bought with money? The answer is “No”. Of all the longest living people in the world, few of them are millionaires. True friendship can’t be bought, either. In a word, where money is dreamed too much, it can cause brothers to quarrel, marriage to end, lovers to hate, and strangers to fight. Parents are the closest people to you in the world. They love you just because you are you. And they would do anything for you.

Like a lot of middle school students, Zhang Yu has a problem. She and her parents don’t get on well. “I really want to be my daddy’s little girl. But it feels like he just doesn’t understand. He talks at me and doesn’t listen.”said Zhang, a junior 3 student in Taiyuan, Shanxi.

Do you and your parents also have problems?

Well, why don’t you all take a walk and have a talk on Saturday? It’s the International

Day of Families. On May 15, people around the world give thanks for good things about their families and work on family problems.

A study last year showed that 1,500 Beijing families had the same problem as Zhang’s family: The children, 12 to 15 years old, didn’t like talking with their parents much. They weren’t happy at home. Of course, lots of kids feel that way. But you and your parents will be much happier if you can be friends. Here are some ways to have a good talk with them:

Listen to them carefully and look them in the eye.

But the baby didn’t change. When she was nice months old, she still looked very different from her parents. Selma and her husband, Paulo, took the baby back to the hospital. (2)

“Of course she is your baby,” the director said. “Immediately after the babies are born, we give them bracelets with numbers. Your baby was number 51. You left the hospital with baby 51. A

“A mistake is possible,” Selma and Paulo thought. “We have another family’s baby. And somewhere another family has our baby. But Sao Paulo is a city of seven million people. How can we find our baby?”

Selma and Paulo went to the hospital again. A nurse at the hospital told Paulo, “I remember another couple. Their baby didn’t look like them. The parents had dark skin, but the baby had very curly hair, but the baby had straight hair.”

The next day Selma took her baby to the couple’s house. She knocked, and a woman opened the door. The woman took one look at Selma’s baby and fainted. Selma helped her into the house. Fro centuries it kept the America from being discovered by the people of Europe.

Many wrong ideas about the Atlantic made early sailors unwilling to sail far out into it. One idea was that it reached out to “the edge of the world. ”Sailors were afraid that they might sail right off the earth. Another idea was that at the equator(赤道) the ocean would be boiling hot.

The Atlantic Ocean is only half as big as the Pacific, but it is still very large. It is more than 4,000 miles (6,000 km) wide where Columbus crossed it. Even at its narrowest it is about 2,000 miles(3,200 km) wide. Two things make the Atlantic Ocean rather unusual. For so large an ocean it has very few islands. Also, it is the world’s saltiest ocean.

But deep, but in some places it is much deeper. The deepest spot is near Puerto Rico(波多黎各). This “deep” measures 30,246 feet-almost six miles(9.6km)

One of the longest mountain ranges of the world rises from the floor of the Atlantic. This

mountain range runs north and south down the middle of the ocean. The tops of a few of the mountains reach up above the sea, and make islands.

Today the Atlantic is a great highway. It is, however, not always smooth and safe one. Storms sweep across it and pile up great waves. Icebergs float down from the far north across the paths of ships .

Columbus sailed for more than two months to cross it. A fast modern steamship can make the trip in less than four days. Airplanes fly from New York to London in only eight hours and from South America to Africa in four! 1. 将(1)句改为简单句

An Event of Imagination

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will

miss our planet, but two pieces will probably hit the southern half of the Earth.

On 17 July, a piece four kilometers wide enters the Earth's atmosphere with a massive explosion.

About half of the piece is destroyed, but the remaining part hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and a huge hole is made in the seabed. Huge waves are created and spread outwards from the hole. The wall of water, a kilometer high, rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned.

Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina.

Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains. The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean. The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes. Millions of people in the southern half of the earth are already dead, but the north won't escape for long. Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, and temperature around the world falls to almost zero. Crops are ruined. The sun won't be seen again for many years. Wars break out as countries fight for food. A year later, no more than 10 million remain alive.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The

dinosaurs (恐龙) were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space. The dinosaurs couldn't live through the cold climate that followed and they died out. Will we meet the same end?【人教版初三下英语任务型阅读题】

A smart card is a card that is carried with either a microprocessor and a memory chip or only a memory chip that is not programmable. The microprocessor card can add. delete, and deal with the information on the card, while a memory-chip card can only do one thing.

Smart cards, unlike magnetic stripe cards, can do many different things and hold a lot of information. In this way, they do not need to get information from a faraway place when they are used.

Today, there are several kinds of smart cards, all of which are very popular in the market:

IC (Integrated Circuit) Microprocessor Cards Microprocessor Cards (chip cards) offer a larger memory and better security than the traditional magnetic stripe cards do. Chip cards can also hold data. These cards are used for many things. Thus, chips have been the main platform for cards that hold a secure digital identity. Some examples of these cards are:

Cards that hold money.

Cards that provide safe access to a network.

Cards that allow setting stop boxes on televisions to remain safe from privacy. Optical Memory Cards Optical memory cards look like cards with a piece of CD on the top. Optical memory cards can store up to 4MB of data. But once written, the data can not be changed or removed. Thus, this type of card is good for keeping records, such as medical files, driving records or travel histories. Today, these have no processors in them (although this is coming in the near future). While the cards are almost as cheap as chip cards, the card readers are expensive.

Since the beginning of human evolution, men have migrated(迁移)across continents in search of food, shelter, safety, and comfortable weather. People still

move for these reasons, but new reasons for human migration are arising, such as job relocation(重新安置) and overpopulation.

Three million migrants are moving from poor countries to wealthier ones each year, and increasingly, their destination is a neighboring country in developing parts of the world. People are moving within the developing world for the same reasons as they migrate to wealthier nations. People from poor countries are going to less poor countries, fleeing wars and conflicts. They are also responding to population pressures because some countries are densely populated, and they often have high population growth. Those people need to go somewhere else.

There are three main reasons why people move. The basic categories and percentages are as follows, according to the Current Population Surveys (CPS):

Family-related reasons account for 26.3%, including changes in marital(婚姻的) status, establishing a household and other family reasons; work-related reasons 16.2%, including job transfer, retirement, and other job-related reasons; housing-related reasons 51.6%, including new and better houses, better neighborhood, cheaper housing and other housing reasons; the remaining 5.9% of other reasons are attending college, the change of climate and health reasons.

Americans have been migrating south and west for decades in search of better job opportunities and warmer climates. They have also been moving to places a little far from cities, in search of bigger yards and houses, lower crime rates and better schools. In 1950, nearly a fifth of the population lived in the nation’s 20 largest cities. In 2006, it was about one in ten. That’s why many American people say, “Big Cities Shrink as People Move South, West.”

【人教版初三下英语任务型阅读题】

Quality after-school programs are designed to improve academic performance, decrease youth crimes and other high-risk behaviors, and help young people grow into healthy, successful adults.

The effect of quality after-school programs on academic performance is clear. Studies show that students who take part in such programs show better work habits, higher rates of homework completion, improved grades, and higher scores on achievement tests. They also have fewer absences and are less likely to blame. After-school programs also influence high-risk teen behavior. Various studies show decreased rates of crime, drug use, and teen sex among youth who join in well-run after-school programs when compared to similar youth who do not. Finally, after-school programs play an important role in supporting the following fields of development: physical development, mental development and social development. Thus, one can safely say that after-school programming is an effective method to help young people become contributing members of society.

Although there is enough proof from both small and large assessments that after-school programs can make a positive difference, it is important to note that not all programs are equal.

First, dosage(时量)matters —young people who attend the most hours over the most years benefit more than members who attend less often or over a shorter period of time. Next, after-school programs make a bigger difference for those students who

hot.

(3.2km) deep, but in some places it is much deeper. The deepest spot is near Puerto Rico(波多黎各). This “deep” measures 30,246 feet-almost six miles(9.6km)

One of the longest mountain ranges of the world rises from the floor of the Atlantic. This mountain range runs north and south down the middle of the ocean.

1. 将(1)句改为简单句
