Sandy: Oh, no! I've not read it yet.

Mark: So what are you studying this term?

Tina: Tom Sawyer. It's a story about a boy who lives in the United States. Many exciting things happen to him.

Mark: Sounds interesting. I’ll have to read it.

Dave: What are you listening to, Alex? The song sounds really good.

Alex: Hey Dave!I'm listening to a band called “The Toms”. Have you heard of them yet?

Dave: No, I haven't. Are they a new band?

Alex: Yes, they only started singing earlier this year. But they've already made two CDs.

Dave: Wow, they must be really popular. Where are they from?

Alex: They're from California, in the United States. There are five people in the band and they're all teenage boys. Dave: I guess what they're playing is pop music, right?

Alex: Yes, but it sounds more like rock. I like their music because it's loud and full of energy I feel excited when I listen to it. Dave: Me, too. I think if I listen to their music every morning, it will wake me up and make me happy for the rest of the day! Alex: Do you want to borrow my CD then?

Dave: Sure, thanks!That’d be great!

Unit 1 Will people have robots?

Section A

1b Listen and circle the predications you hear in activity 1a.

Do you think people will have robots in their homes in 100 years.

Yes, I do. I saw a robot on TV, and it cleaned the kitchen.

Well, I don't think people will use money.

Do you think everything will be free?

Yeah, probably.

I think there will be only one country.

Only one country in the whole world? Will there be world peace?

I hope so.

【新目标八年级下册英语听力下载】

I bet kids won't go to school. They'll study at home on computers.

Oh, I disagree.【新目标八年级下册英语听力下载】

You do?

Yeah, there will always be schools.

2a Listen and circle the words you hear. (2b Listen again. Check the predictions you hear.)

OK, now I want to hear everyone's predictions about the future.

Well, I think there will be more people.

More people? OK, what else?

I predict that there will be less free time.

I hope not!

Well, I think there will be fewer cars.

You do ?

Yes, people will use the subways more.

That's a great idea. Let's hear another prediction.

That will be less pollution.

That will be good for the earth!

I think there will be fewer trees. I think cities will be really big and crowed because there will be a lot more people.

Section B

2a Listen to Alexis and Joe. Number the pictures 1-3.

2b Listen again. Fill in the blanks with the correct verbs from the box. Conversation 1

Hi, I'm Alexis.

Nice to meet you, Alexis. I'm Joe.

Nice to meet you, Joe. Do you live here in Techville?

Yes, I do. I live in an apartment across the street from here.

Oh, really?

Yes, I work near here too, at Sisco Software Systems. I am a computer programmer.

A computer programmer? That sounds interesting.

Well, actually it's kind of boring. I do the same thing every day.

Conversation 2

Hey, Joe, is that a picture of you?

Yeah, that was me ten years ago.

So, did you live here in Techville ten years ago?

No, I lived with my parents in greenville. We lived in a house in the country. I went to school here on Techville, though.

Really? That's pretty far from here. How did you get to school?

Oh, I took the train to school.

Conversation 3

So, Joe, what do you think your life will be like in ten years?

Oh, I think I'll be an astronaut.

An astronaut? Are you kidding?

No, I'm serious. I'll fly rockets to the moon. Maybe there will be flights to other planets.

Oh, and where will you live?

I'll live on a space station.

3a Read Ming's answer to the question "What will your life be like in ten years?" Then fill in the chart below.

In ten years, I think I'll be a reporter. I'll live in Shanghai, because I went to Shanghai last year and fell in love with it. I think it's really a beautiful city. As a reporter, I think I will meet lots of interesting people. I think I'll live in an apartment with my best friends, because I don't like living alone. I'll have pets. I can't have any pets now because my mother hates them and our apartment is too small. So in ten years, I'll have many different pets. I might even keep a pet parrot! I'll probably go skating and swimming every day. During the week I'll look smart, and probably will wear a suit. At the weekends, I'll be able to dress more casually. I think I'll go to Hong Kong on vacation, and one day I might even visit Australia.

Self Check 2

Read the passage and circle the inventions on the right.

Predicting the future can be difficult. There are many famous predictions that never came true. Before 1929, there was no sound in movies. The head of one of the biggest movie companies

in the United States predicted that no one would want to see actors talk. Of course, he was wrong!

In 1977, the head of the largest computer company in the United States said, "No one will want

to have a computer in his or her home." He thought that computers would never be used by most people.

Reading: Do you think you will have your own robot? In some science fiction movies, people in the future have their own robots. These robots are just like humans. They help with the housework and do the most unpleasant jobs.

Some scientists believe that there will be such robots in the future. However, they agree it may take hundreds of years. Scientists are now trying to make robots look like people and do the same things as us.

Japanese companies have already made robots walk and dance .This kind of robot will also be fun to watch.

But robot scientist James White disagrees. He thinks that it will be difficult for a robot to do the same things as a person. For example ,it's easy for a child to wake up and know where the are. Mr. White thinks that robots won't be able to do this. But other scientists disagree. They think that robots will be able to talk to people in 25 to 50 years.

【新目标八年级下册英语听力下载】

Robot scientists are not just trying to make robots look like people. For example, there are already robots working in factories. These robots look more like huge arms. They do simple jobs over and over again. People would not like to do such jobs and would get bored. But robots will never get bored.

In the future ,there will be more robots everywhere, and humans will have less work to do. New robots will have many different shapes. Some will look like humans, and others might look like snakes. After an earthquake, a snake robot could help look for people under buildings. That may not seem possible now, but computers, space rockets and even electric toothbrushes seemed impossible a hundred years ago. We never know what will happen in the future!

Unit 5

[in the studio]

Reporter: The weather is beautiful today! But yesterday's rainstorm was the heaviest one so far this year. So, what were people doing yesterday at the time of the rainstorm?

[outside the studio, on the street]

Girl: I was at home doing my homework. But I could hear the heavy rain against my bedroom window.

Boy: I was reading at the library after school. I’m so glad I didn't decide to play basketball!

Woman: I was waiting for the bus after work.. Then the rain suddenly started and I got all wet.

Man: I was walking home from the supermarket. Luckily I had an umbrella, but I still got wet!

[back in the studio]

Reporter: Looks like many people were caught in the rain yesterday. Many took hours to get home...

Boy: Yesterday was a terrible day. My alarm didn't go off so I woke up late. It was seven thirty when I woke up, and I needed to be at school by eight! I ran to the bus stop... but, I still missed the bus. It was eight thirty when I got to school. My teacher was angry and I felt bad all day At four thirty it was time to go home. I was waiting for the bus when... all of a sudden... it began to rain heavily It was like... a really crazy rainstorm! I thought I had an umbrella in my schoolbag, so I kept trying to look for it. I was so busy looking for the umbrella that I didn't see a car coming. And it got water all over me! I was waiting like that.. completely wet... for maybe almost an hour. finally the bus came and brought me home. I took a hot shower and ate some warm food. It felt so good to be home!

John: Hey Kate, why weren't you at the school basketball competition yesterday? I called you so many times, but you didn't answer.

Kate: Sorry, John.. I left my phone at home.

John: What were you doing at the time of the competition?

Kate: Well, I left my house late and when the competition started, I was still making my way to school.

John: Then what happened?

Kate: when I got to the bus stop, I realized that my bag was still at home!

Iohn: But why didn’t you just go home to get your bag?

Kate: I did, but while I was running back home, I saw a dog by the side of the road and it was hurt.

John: Oh, so I'm sure you helped the dog. I know how much you love animals.

Kate: Yes, I wanted to call the Animal Helpline, but I didn't have my phone so I had to wait for someone to walk by. Then I used his phone to call the helpline.

John: OK. No wonder you didn't make it to the competition.

Kate: Yes, I'm so sorry I wasn't there to cheer you on, but I'm happy that your team won!
