Public schools in Washington, D.C. provide students with musical instruments for free. When something goes wrong with an instrument, Char1es West and Larry Jernigan do the repairs. Both men approach their work with a passion(激情). For them, it's important that students have a joyful experience with music.

The two have worked together for almost 20 years. This year alone, they've fixed about 450 instruments. Both men are musicians and music lovers, so learning to do repairs came naturally.

West believes if children start early and stay involved with music, it enriches other areas of their lives. “I see that in other kids. I see it in myself. I have seen it hundreds of times and it works,”he says.“They learn teamwork. They 1earn patience and respect.”

But West has concerns about the future of music in the electronic age.

“This instant age has taken away from the sit-down, the patience. And to learn to play an instrument, it takes patience, it takes diligence, it takes time.”

Being able to enjoy music on the job is one of the benefits of the job. Both men agree their best rewards are the students' performances.

Increasingly, Americans are becoming their own doctors, by going online to diagnose their

symptoms, order home health tests or medical devices, or even self-treat their illnesses with drugs from Internet pharmacies(药店). Some avoid doctors because of the high cost of medical care, especially if they lack health insurance. Or they may stay because they find it embarrassing to discuss their weight, alcohol consumption or couch potato habits. Patients may a1so fear what they might learn about their health, or they distrust physicians because of negative experiences in the past. But p1aying doctor can also be a deadly game.

Every day, more than six million Americans turn to the Internet for medical answers -most of them aren't nearly skeptical enough of What they find. A 2002 survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 72 percent of those surveyed believe all or most of what they read on health websites. They shouldn't. Look up “headache”, and the chances of finding reliable and complete information, free from a motivation for commercial gain, are only one in ten, reports an April 2005 Brown Medical School study. Of the l69 websites the researchers rated, only l6 scored as “high quality”. Recent studies found faulty facts about all sorts of other disorders, causing one research team to warn that a large amount of incomplete, inaccurate and even dangerous information exists on the Internet.

The problem is that most people don't know the safe way to surf the Web.“They use a search engine 1ike Google, get l8 trillion choices and start clicking. But that's risky, because almost anybody can put up a site that looks authoritative(权威的), so it's hard to know Whether What you're reading is reasonable or not,” says Dr.Sarah Bass from the National Cancer Institute. 61. According to the text, an increasing number of Americans .

A. find medical devices easy to operate

B. prefer to be diagnosed online by doctors

C. are afraid to face the truth of their health

D. are afraid to misuse their health insurance 63. According to the study of Brown Medical School, .

A. more than 6 million Americans distrust doctors

B. only 1/l0 of medical websites aim to make a profit

C. about l/10 of the websites surveyed are of high quality

D. 72% of health websites offer incomplete and faulty facts

64. Which of the following is the author's main argument?

A. It's cheap to se1f-treat your own illness.

B. It's embarrassing to discuss your bad habits.

Interviewer is a woman, with a British accent. G is an American architect.

Good afternoon everybody and on the programme this afternoon is an expert of American domestic architecture, Mr Simon Oppenheim who's going to talk to us about the house of the future. So where shall we be Interviewer: living in twenty years' time?

Twenty years isn't a long time. We won't be living underground or in G: space. We'll be living in houses and flats just as we do today.

Interviewer: What will the houses look like?

I think they'll look much the same as they do today, at least from the G: outside. But they will be different inside.

Interviewer: In what way?

For a start, they'll be more flexible. That means we'll be able to move the walls to create bigger or smaller rooms when we want to. So the G: dining room and living room as we know them would disappear.

Interviewer: And the kitchen?

The kitchen will become the most important room in the house! We'll still be cooking, and we'll probably be using the kitchen more as a

G: family room. And bathrooms will be bigger.

Interviewer: So we'll be spending more time in the bath.

Just as other people have done in the past, like in the days of the

G: ancient Romans, when the bath had an important social function ... Interviewer: What about furniture?

Well, a lot of furniture will be the same—we'll still be sitting in chairs and using cupboards to keep things in, but the technology will be

different. I think a single computer will control most of the functions in G: the house, and it will have a voice recognition system.

Interviewer: So we'll just have to say "Switch on the light!" and the light comes on?

G: Yes, that's right. And the technology will be smarter.

Interviewer: Smarter?

Yes. For example, if we run out of something, like there's no more milk left in the fridge, the computer will tell us. Maybe a shopping list would appear on a screen on the fridge. And the toilet will move higher or

G: lower, depending on who uses it—a child or an adult.

Interviewer: Will the houses of the future be environment friendly?

Yes, definitely. We'll be using machines which use less energy. An

example could be a dishwasher which doesn't need water. I think

G: everyone will be trying hard to take care of the environment.

G: Does that mean you're optimistic about the future?

Interviewer: Oh yes, very definitely.

Good beginning,half done.
