Would you like to orbit(环绕轨道运行) the Earth inside the International Space Station? Now you can take a space holiday for a price. This is due to a decision by top space officials in the United States, Russia, Canada, Japan and the European Space Agency.

Last April, American businessman Dennis Tito reportedly paid between twelve million and twenty million dollars to spend one week on the International Space Station. NASA didn’t agree with the Russian plan to send a civilian(平民)to the costly research vehicle. But after talking about it for two years, space officials have agreed on a way to train private citizens so that they can take trips to the International Space Station.

NASA recently agreed to conditions that will permit Russia to sell trips to the space station. The trips are planned by an American company called Space Adventures Limited of Arlington, Virginia. The company calls itself “the world’s leading space tourism company”. The company has already sold a space trip to Mark Shuttleworth, a South African businessman. In April, Mister Shuttleworth will be launched into space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Experts say that the new decision by NASA shows a new desire to use space vehicles for business and industrial purposes. In a speech to Congress last year, NASA official Michael Hawes said that the space agency did not have civilian travel as one of the industries it wanted to develop, however, Mister Hawes said that private space travel could now be done as long as safety measures are observed carefully.

56. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. Traveling in space is expensive B. civilian space travel is now possible

C. NASA refused civilian request D. Russia objects to civilian space travel

57. Why did the NASA change its policy?

A. to be serious in its work B. to fight against Russia

C. to make money from it D. to protect the country

58. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. It took two years for the space officials to reach an agreement.

B. The first civilian traveler spent 7 days in space

C. The space trips will be operated by a Russian company

D. Safety measures are very important for space travel

American scientists have found that some birds are more intelligent than experts had believed. The scientists say that birds have abilities that involve communication and different kinds of memory. In some unusual cases, their abilities seem better than those of humans. The findings were presented at the yearly meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The scientists met for six days last month in Boston, Massachusetts.

Irene Pepperberg presented her research about a Grey parrot named Griffin. lives in her laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Mizz Pepperberg says that Griffin can arrange objects in order of size. She says that the talking bird also can combine words in the right order. For example, he will combine words when asking for a piece of food. The researcher says that experts had thought only humans and other mammals with large brains have the ability to combine objects and words. She believes that bird brains have the ability to understand that complex tasks must be done in the correct order.

Some birds have other memory skills, too. ________, they collect and store thousands of seeds in autumn, and find them later in winter.

Alan Kamil and Alan Bond of the University of Nebraska are studying the memories of birds called jays and nutcrackers. Their experiments suggest that these birds use natural objects to find the seeds they have stored. They found that the birds use at least three objects, such as rocks or trees, to find the stored seeds.

Rob: Hi, Diane!

Diane: Hi, Rob! How are you doing?

Rob: I’m fine. I've just been to my first language class.

Diane: Oh really? So have I.

Rob: Really? Which language are you studying? Diane: Spanish. Which language are you studying? Rob: Chinese.

Diane: Is that right? Cool! How was it? Rob: It was good. Diane: Mr Davies?

The teacher's name is Mr. Davies.

Roh: Yes, he isn't Chinese, obviously, but he's fluent in Chinese. And there's an assistant teacher called Miss Wang. She is Chinese. We're going to see her once a week.

Diane: And what do you think?

Rob: Well, learning Chinese isn't going to be easy-but the first lesson was very enjoyable-l liked it a lot. Mr. Davies gave us a lot of encouragement-he made us feel really good about being there. The most important thing at the beginning is pronunciation, getting the sounds right-and he was very good at correction-he said it didn't matter if we made mistakes. I think we all made a lot of progress-in just an hour! Diane: That’s great.

Rob: What about Spanish? Did you start yet?

Diane: Yes, we did. The teacher is nice, but I already speak some Spanish and the rest of the class are really beginners. I misunderstood the teacher-I thought she said the class was for people who already speak Spanish. I'm not sure if I'm going to make much progress.

Roh: Oh, I’m sure things will improve.

Diane: Maybe-actually, I was a bit disappointed-she explained everything in English. Rob: Oh, that’s too bad.

I don't agree that all good teachers talk a lot.

Some good teachers talk a lot and some don't. I do think that teachers need to be strict, but they don't need to be very strict. I do believe that discipline is important. Yes I like teachers who are amusing. I think you enjoy the lesson more and so you learn more. And I agree with the statement that the most popular

teachers are very kind. Everyone likes kind people. Of course, good teachers always return homework quickly. I think that's very important. And the next statement is obviously true, a teacher must check that everyone in the class understands. What about the next statement? No, I don't agree with that at all. There are times when a teacher needs to talk without interruption. And the last statement-It doesn't matter if a teacher is not organized. That's really stupid. A teacher must be organised.
